Show notes

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Josh Parham & guest Ryan McQuade. Today, we're discussing the newest film from action film director Michael Bay, "Ambulance," starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul Mateen II & Eiza González. With a stripped-down story and a smaller budget than what accustomed to seeing in a Michael Bay movie, what did we think of his latest? We discuss the acting, action, story, editing, and Bay-isms in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interviews With "Everything Everywhere All At Once" Editor, Paul Rogers & Sound Supervisor, Brent Kiser Apr 06, 2022

Show notes

We know that there will be plenty of interviews with writers/directors Daniels, leading star Michelle Yeoh, and the rest of the cast for A24's latest release, "Everything Everywhere All At Once." However, for a film this packed with a deep love for the cinematic art form, we decided to chat with the artisans who worked behind the scenes to make the film the standout critical hit it has become. First up, we have my interview with film editor Paul Rogers who previously collaborated with Daniel Scheinert on "The Death Of Dick Long." Then we have Will Mavity's interview with the sound editor and re-recording mixer, Brent Kiser. Together, the two reveal the secrets, challenges, and rewards of making what is already being healed as one of the best films of 2022. Be sure to check out the film when it releases wide this weekend, and please take a listen to our interviews below. Thank you, and enjoy!

"Morbius" Apr 02, 2022

Show notes

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Ema Sasic & guest Tessa Smith. Today, we're discussing the long-delayed and morbidly anticipated "Morbius," starring Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal & Tyrese Gibson. A new entry into Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) alongside the "Spider-Man" and "Venom" films, the movie was delayed multiple times by Sony due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rumors that they were not confident in the film's success. Was that fear warranted? Does the movie meet, exceed or miss our expectations? What did we think of the acting, visual effects, action, and story? Tune in below to find out what we thought of it in our SPOILER-FILLED review, and enjoy!

Interview With "Nitram" Director, Justin Kurzel Mar 31, 2022

Show notes

Justin Kurzel has become one of Australia's leading filmmakers delivering memorable films such as "Macbeth" and "The True History Of The Kelly Gang." His latest film, "Nitram," captures a dark moment in modern Australian history pertaining to gun violence and mental health. The film had its world premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since gone on to win the Best Actor prize for its star Caleb Landry Jones and eight AACTA awards, including Best Film & Best Director. Justin was kind enough to take a few minutes to discuss what drew him to the project, working with Landry Jones, what he hopes audiences will take away from the film, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

"The Piano" Mar 24, 2022

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Academy Award-winner Jane Campion is set to have a big weekend as her latest film, "The Power Of The Dog," is heading into Oscar Sunday with a leading twelve nominations, and many are expecting the New Zealand-born director to win her first Oscar for Best Director. However, back in 1993, she made a huge splash with her beautifully haunting film "The Piano," starring Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill & Anna Paquin. Becoming the first woman ever to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the film would also earn two additional Academy Awards for Best Actress (Holly Hunter) and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin, who was only eleven at the time). What did we think of the film, revisiting it all of these years later? What did we think of the themes, characters, music, cinematography, and its awards season run? Nicole Ackman, Casey Lee Clark & Danilo Castro join me to discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. Please check out the Criterion Collection's recent gorgeous 4K UHD restoration of the film; listen down below and enjoy!
