"Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness" May 07, 2022

Show notes

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Nicole Ackman, Lauren LaMagna & Amy Smith. Today, we're discussing the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), "Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness," starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg & Rachel McAdams. Director Sam Raimi returns to Marvel after helming the original "Spider-Man" trilogy, and he brings his distinct filmmaking style and love of the horror genre to inject new life into the world's biggest franchise. Is it enough to overcome the well-established style that Kevin Feige has had in place for over a decade? What did we think of the story, the writing, the performances, and the visual effects? We discuss all of these points and more in our review below. For those who want to hear us discuss spoilers, we save that for its own section at the end. Thank you, and enjoy!

Interview With "Lux Æterna" Director, Gaspar Noé May 06, 2022

After what feels like an eternity since the pandemic changed the face of the American theatre scene, we can officially say Broadway is back as Nicole Ackman, Cody Dericks, Lauren LaMagna, and I go through a whole season of shows eligible for this year's Tony Award Nominations. The announcement for the nominations will occur on May 9th, and for this episode, we all come together to give our thoughts on what will be nominated and what might miss out. Please give this full-length episode a listen, and if you like what you hear, you can subscribe to our Patreon for our other non-Tony-specific episodes throughout the year. We'll be back post-nominations at the beginning of June to give our final predictions on the winners with another episode following the big show on June 12th (which we recently found out will be hosted by recent Oscar-winner Arianna DeBose) to discuss the fallout of the 75th annual Tony Awards. Enjoy!

Interview With "Hatching" Director, Hannah Bergholm Apr 29, 2022

Show notes

"Hatching" had its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival as a part of its Midnight Section and is now being released by IFC Midnight this weekend in limited release. The coming-of-age horror film boasts some incredibly gruesome practical creature effects, which harkens back to horror films of the 70s and 80s with an outstanding dual performance from the film's breakout star, Siiri Solalinna. Director Hannah Bergholm was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the film's story, Siiri's performance, the film's special effects, and more. Please take a listen down below and check out the film in theaters this weekend or when it goes on-demand on May 17th. Thank you.

"Skyfall" Apr 28, 2022

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Our 2012 retrospective continues with one of the biggest films from that year. Sam Mendes' "Skyfall" was a game-changer for the James Bond franchise critically, financially, and awards-wise. Heralded for its cinematography, focus on character, score, and iconic James Bond theme by multi-award-winning artist Adele, the film is often regarded as one of the finest James Bond films and one of the finest films of 2012. What do we think of it ten years later? Do the action scenes hold up for us? What about the story? How do we feel about the performances by Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, and Judi Dench? We discuss all of this plus the film's awards season run and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review down below. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review I have Sara Clements, Josh Parham, Zoe Rose Bryant & Patreon guest Ben Sears. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you!

Interview With "Navalny" Director, Daniel Roher Apr 27, 2022

Show notes

"Navalny" had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the overall Festival Favorite Award. One couldn't have guessed how a month later, the film would prove to be more timely than ever when Russia waged war on Ukraine. The documentary tells the story of the rise of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the plot to assassinate him by the Kremlin. Though Navalny is currently behind bars, the documentary has resonated with all those who have seen it. Director Daniel Roher was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the impact his film is having on audiences, if he fears for his own safety after making the documentary, what went into capturing that shocking phone call between Navalny and his assassins. We discuss all of this and more in our podcast, which you can listen to down below. The film had its premiere this past Sunday on CNN & will be available on HBO Max starting May 26th. Enjoy!

Interview With "The Northman" Director/Co-Writer, Robert Eggers Apr 25, 2022

Show notes

"The Northman" is the third feature film from director Robert Eggers ("The Witch" &"The Lighthouse"), and like his two previous films, it's an unforgettably immersive experience due to the meticulous amounts of research that went into the project with a gripping revenge story steeped in themes we're familiar with. Eggers set out to make the definitive Viking film, and he's done just that with his latest. The director was kind enough to speak with me for a few minutes about what it was like working with a higher budget than his last two films, what the most fun day on set was, his collaboration with Alexander Skarsgård, what he has planned next and more. Please take a listen down below, enjoy and check out the film on the biggest screen you possibly can, now playing from Focus Features! Thank you.
