Show notes

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Dan Bayer, Eve O'Dea, Will Mavity & Daniel Howat. Today, we're discussing the third feature film from visionary director Robert Eggers titled "The Northman," starring Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk & Willem Dafoe. Following the success of "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse," Eggers was given close to $100 million to make what he wanted to be the definitive Viking film. Did he succeed? We discuss the meticulous crafts and research that went into making this brutal and epic project, the performances, writing, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Please take a listen down below and enjoy as we enter the fiery Gates of Hell on our road to Valhalla!

Interview With "The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent" Director/Writer Tom Gormican & Writer Kevin Etten Apr 22, 2022

Show notes

"The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent," which is now playing in theaters from Lionsgate, is not only a showcase role for Nicolas Cage but also a tribute to the Academy Award-winning actor. Anyone who is a fan will be won over by the film's humor, action, and fearlessness with how much Nicolas Cage throws himself into playing an exaggerated version of himself alongside a hilarious Pedro Pascal. The duo's fantastic chemistry might win over even critics and skeptics. Director/Writer Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with me about their newest film, how they managed to convince Nicolas Cage to come on board, what it was like working with Pedro Pascal, which movies would they program for a Nicolas Cage Film Festival and more! Please take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you.

Interview With "Charlotte" Star, Keira Knightley Apr 21, 2022

Show notes

"Charlotte" had its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and is now receiving a limited release starting this weekend in New York, Los Angeles, and Canada before slowly rolling out to other markets. The film tells the true story of artist Charlotte Salomon, a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin who hid from the Nazis during World War II before being tragically murdered at Auschwitz in 1943. Years later, her paintings gained international recognition, and now her story is being told in animation form by directors Eric Warin and Tahir Rana. Academy Award-nominee Keira Knightley ("The Imitation Game") provides the vocal performance for Charlotte, infusing her with grace, intelligence and warmth. Knightley was kind enough to talk with us about her work on the film, her thoughts on the true story, its subject, and more. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

"Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore" Apr 16, 2022

Show notes

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Josh Parham, Tom O'Brien & guest Amanda Guaraggi. Today, we're discussing the newest film in the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise titled, "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore," starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, and a bunch of others. This franchise has gotten off to a rocky start and hasn't been helped by the actions of many involved, both behind and in front of the camera, in their personal lives. Was this an improvement on the last film? Does it come close to recapturing the magic of the original "Harry Potter" films? What did we think of the acting, crafts, writing, and do we believe the franchise will be able to close out with the planned fourth and fifth installments? We discuss all of these points and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Please take a listen down below and enjoy!

"Zero Dark Thirty" Apr 14, 2022

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

As promised at the conclusion of the 2021 awards season, we have our first of ten NBP Podcast reviews for our 2012 retrospective, which will be running from now until the end of the summer. That first film is Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to her Oscar-winning film "The Hurt Locker," titled "Zero Dark Thirty," which saw her re-team with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Mark Boal. With a large ensemble cast led by Jessica Chastain, Bigelow's film ignited a ton of controversy upon its release, making for one of the most spectacular rises and falls in awards season history. What do we think of the film ten years later? We discuss the direction, writing, editing, Chastain's performance, and more in our review. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review, I have Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, and guests Nadia Dalimonte and Charles Bright. We hope you enjoy our first of many discussions on the film year that was 2012. Thank you!

Interview With "Paris, 13th District" Director, Jacques Audiard & Star, Lucie Zhang Apr 13, 2022

Show notes

The 27th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema wrapped up in New York a few weeks ago, and as always, the Film at Lincoln Center did a fantastic job with their programming, talks, and events. The acclaimed festival highlights the best of what contemporary French filmmaking has to offer, with many great artists from across the sea attending in-person, including Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, Mathieu Almaric, Emmanuel Carrère, Emilie Carpentier, Vincent Maël Cardona, and Leyla Bouzid. One of the great auteur filmmakers of our time is Jacques Audiard, who brought his film "Prais, 13th District" to the festival after its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The film is a fascinating exploration of casual sex and relationships set in modern-day Paris, seen through the eyes of complex adults starring Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Jehnny Beth & Noémie Merlant. Audiard and Zhang were kind enough to talk with me about the film, their work together, and what they plan to do next. Please take a listen to my conversation with them below and be sure to check out the film which is opening in limited release this week from IFC Films. Thank you.
