"Deep Water" Mar 19, 2022

Show notes

For our main podcast review this week, Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Tom O'Brien & Will Mavity all join me to discuss the first film from Academy Award-nominee Adrian Lyne in over twenty years, "Deep Water," starring Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas, Tracy Letts, Lil Rel Howery, Dash Mihok, Finn Wittrock, Kristen Connolly, Jacob Elordi & Rachel Blanchard. What did we think of this new erotic thriller? Did we enjoy the performances, the writing, the sex, the murder, the intrigue, and how about that sometimes intentional but mostly unintentional comedy? We discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. Please take a listen and enjoy!

Interview With "The Outfit" Director/Writer, Graham Moore Mar 18, 2022

Show notes

Graham Moore is a name you may remember from 2014 when he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Imitation Game." Now, he's back, and this time he's writing and stepping behind the camera for the first time with his directorial debut "The Outfit," starring Mark Rylance, Zoey Deutch, Johnny Flynn, Dylan O'Brien, Nikki Amuka-Bird & Simon Russell Beale. A sophisticated single location crime thriller with more than enough twists to fill ten movies, the film opens in theaters from Focus Features this weekend. Graham was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about the screenplay, the twists and turns it takes, working with Mark Rylance, and more. Click below to take a listen and enjoy!

Interview With "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye" Star, Jessica Chastain Mar 14, 2022

Show notes

Jessica Chastain has been a powerhouse both in front and behind the camera as an actress and producer since she exploded onto the film scene with her breakout year in 2011, which resulted in her first Oscar nomination for "The Help." A decade later, here she is now, with her third Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress in a film she produced and developed for ten years, "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye." Following her Screen Actors Guild win for Best Actress (and as of today, Critics Choice winner now as well), Jessica was kind enough to take the time to talk with me about her career, how it feels like it's culminated in this moment of recognition for her, her thoughts on the current status of female-led stories in the industry today, working with her co-star Andrew Garfield, and more! Be sure to please take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you.

While we're recording this week's episode before the BAFTA and Critics Choice Award winners are revealed (we'll go over those next week), there's still plenty to talk about, including the DGA, CDG, and VES winners, our predictions for what we think will win the PGA, and the trailer for Richard Linklater's "Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood." We also go over the polls, announce the staff-voted 2021 NBP Film Awards winners, answer your fan-submitted questions, and more! Here to join me this week, I have Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and as a guest from Awards Watch, Erik Anderson. Thank you all so very much for your support, and enjoy! Next week is the big one...

"Drive My Car" had its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Screenplay prize. Then it went on to play at various other festivals before making history as the first Japanese film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. With wins from the New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and National Society Of Film Critics for Best Film, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's nearly three-hour-long meditation on grief, regret, and artistic expression is one of the best-reviewed films of the year, also securing Oscar nominations for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Tom O'Brien & guest Jonathan Fujii aka. "The Film Drunk," joined me to discuss the film's themes, characters, filmmaking style, and more. If you have not yet seen the film, you can stream it currently on HBO Max. We highly recommend you do so before listening to our spoiler-filled review. Once you do, please come back, take a listen down below and enjoy!

Interview With "Belfast" Star, Ciarán Hinds Mar 09, 2022

Show notes

After working for years on stage, film, and television, as one of the great character actors, Ciarán Hinds finally received long-overdue recognition from a major awards body for his performance in Kenneth Branagh's "Belfast" with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Ciarán plays a version of the director's grandfather growing up in 1969 Ireland and brings a level of wit, warmth, and humanity to the role in ways that have strongly resonated with audiences. He was kind enough to take some time to talk with me about receiving the news of his Oscar nomination, working with Judi Dench for the first time, what Branagh's film means to him, and more. Be sure to please take a listen and enjoy! Thank you.

Immediate Reactions To The 2022 Spirit Awards With The NBP Film Community Mar 07, 2022

Show notes

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL EPISODE. Please check out the full podcast episode on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture

Last night, the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards were held last night representing the best in independent film for 2021. After the show, I decided to hop on a Zoom call with the NBP Film Community (just as we did last year) right after the show to talk about the winners and what our thoughts are about what any of this means for the Oscar race. Since Film Independent is an organization that anyone can join, it makes sense to celebrate this evening with the community, some of whom are voters themselves! Tune in below to listen and enjoy!
