1747: Travis Childers From Old Paths Farms Says He Was Politically Targeted By Farmers Market Jul 21, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the LLVLC Show, we have the second of a two-part conversation about MASKGATE at the Hub City Farmer’s Market.

“The posts that we made were very clearly indicating that we support equality for all. We’re not saying that black lives don’t matter. What an absurd thing for someone to say in the 21st century.”

    Travis Childers

In today’s show, Jimmy shares Part 2 of a special 2-part LLVLC Show investigative report looking into a story about an incident that recently happened at his local farmer’s market in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Just over a month ago, one of the longtime animal foods vendors at the Hub City Farmers Market named Travis Childers from Old Paths Farm was banned from being at the market because he refused to wear a mask. Something didn’t seem right about this story, so Jimmy dug deeper to see what really happened.

    WATCH PART 1 HERE: https://youtu.be/kePukEXNaOA

Jimmy interviewed Travis to get his side of the story and responds to the claims made about him by the Executive Director of the Hub City Farmers Market Jordan Wolfe in my previous interview. Tune in to hear how he attempted to communicate his concerns privately, the frustration he felt that he wasn’t being heard, his faithfulness in support the Hub City Farmers Market for the past 7 years, the increased aggression being shown towards him by the market manager, his concern with having politics mixed in with a nonpartisan community group like the farmers market, and how this entire incident was preventable had there been better communication all around. It’s an unfortunate tale in what NOT to do when conflict arises.

NOTE: Travis and his Old Paths Farm business has successfully moved to the nearby Landrum, SC Farmers Market who do not play politics and do not require him to show proof of the hokey pokey or wear a mask. You can visit him there on Saturdays from 8-12PM: https://agriculture.sc.gov/farmers-markets/landrum-farmers-market/

1746: Jordan Wolfe Defends Hub City Farmers Market For Banning Farmer Over Mask Mandate Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

Today on the LLVLC Show, we have the first of a two-part conversation about MASKGATE at the Hub City Farmer’s Market.

“Our decision had everything to do with the reaction to the mask policy and what happened the two weeks after the attempt to enforce that policy.”

    Jordan Wolfe

In today’s show, Jimmy shares Part 1 of a special 2-part LLVLC Show investigative report looking into a story about an incident that recently happened at his local farmer’s market in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Just over a month ago, one of the longtime animal foods vendors at the Hub City Farmers Market named Travis Childers from Old Paths Farm was banned from being at the market because he refused to wear a mask. Something didn’t seem right about this story, so Jimmy dug deeper to see what really happened.

Jimmy interviewed the Executive Director of the Hub City Farmers Market named Jordan Wolfe to detail exactly what happened from her perspective, the challenges that the pandemic presented her market, why the mask policy was incredibly difficult to enforce, whether they required their vendors to show proof of getting the hokey pokey, the role of the interpersonal conflict between the market manager and the farmer, why they didn’t invite the farmer back even after removing the mask policy, and the complicity in the mistakes that were made in handling this incident.

Today you’ll get the farmers market side of the story and in Part 2 on Wednesday we will hear from the farmer Travis Childers to hear what happened on his end of things.DON’T MISS IT!

1745: Sam Apple Pays Homage To Keto-Cancer Legacy Of Otto Warburg In RAVENOUS Jul 14, 2021
    Show notes

On today’s episode of the LLVLC Show, Jimmy welcomes Sam Apple for an exciting conversation about his new book RAVENOUS.

“He found out that all these pathways that are activated in cancer are activated by insulin.”

    Sam Apple

In this interview, Jimmy talks to a science writing professor from Johns Hopkins named Sam Apple who recently released a book about the life and work of Otto Warburg entitled RAVENOUS: Otto Warburg, the Nazis, and the Search for the Cancer-Diet Connection. The book is spellbinding and reminds people of the history of Warburg’s Nobel Prize-winning ideas surrounding the metabolic connection to the treatment and prevention of the development of cancer. Jimmy and Sam go deep into the topic of sugar, insulin, metabolism, cancer, and more in this engaging interview!

    https://www.amazon.com/Ravenous-Warburg-Search-Cancer-Diet-Connection-ebook/dp/B08L6Y3W2B/

In Ravenous, Sam Apple reclaims Otto Warburg as a forgotten, morally compromised genius who pursued cancer single-mindedly even as Europe disintegrated around him. While the vast majority of Jewish scientists fled Germany in the anxious years leading up to World War II, Warburg remained in Berlin, working under the watchful eye of the dictatorship. With the Nazis goose-stepping their way across Europe, systematically rounding up and murdering millions of Jews, Warburg awoke each morning in an elegant, antiques-filled home and rode horses with his partner, Jacob Heiss, before delving into his research at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society.

Hitler and other Nazi leaders, Apple shows, were deeply troubled by skyrocketing cancer rates across the Western world, viewing cancer as an existential threat akin to Judaism or homosexuality. Ironically, they viewed Warburg as Germany’s best chance of survival. Setting Warburg’s work against an absorbing history of cancer science, Apple follows him as he arrives at his central belief that cancer is a problem of metabolism. Though Warburg’s metabolic approach to cancer was considered groundbreaking, his work was soon eclipsed in the early postwar era, after the discovery of the structure of DNA set off a search for the genetic origins of cancer.

Remarkably, Warburg’s theory has undergone a resurgence in our own time, as scientists have begun to investigate the dangers of sugar and the link between obesity and cancer, finding that the way we eat can influence how cancer cells take up nutrients and grow. Rooting his revelations in extensive archival research as well as dozens of interviews with today’s leading cancer authorities, Apple demonstrates how Warburg’s midcentury work may well hold the secret to why cancer became so common in the modern world and how we can reverse the trend. A tale of scientific discovery, personal peril, and the race to end a disastrous disease, Ravenous would be the stuff of the most inventive fiction were it not, in fact, true.

1744: June 2021 Study Finds Childhood Sugar Consumption Leads To Cognitive Decline As An Adult Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

On today’s episode of Jimmy Makes Science Simple, Jimmy takes a look at a new study that links childhood sugar consumption with cognitive decline later in life.

In today’s episode, Jimmy presents a NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN episode of his show JIMMY MAKES SCIENCE SIMPLE (http://www.instagram.com/jimmymakessciencesimple) to outline important new research he wanted you to know about. It’s a study published in the June 2021 issue of Frontiers In Neuroscience entitled “Long-Term Over-consumption of Sugar Starting at Adolescence Produces Persistent Hyperactivity and Neurocognitive Deficits in Adulthood”: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2021.670430/full

This mouse study makes the connection between sugar consumption as a child and hyperactivity and neurocognitive issues as an adult. It’s a truly fascinating look at the reaction in various doses of sucrose on the brain, weight, memory, behavior, anxiety and depression, impulsivity, and more. The most impactful and sobering line in the study was where it stated that “sugar over-consumption satisfies all criteria for the classification of sugar as a drug of abuse.” WHOA! While animal-based research doesn’t have direct impact on humans and merely form a hypothesis for doing a randomized controlled trial (RCT), this lays the groundwork for a strong correlative human study on the detrimental brain-altering effects of sugar consumption in childhood manifesting in adulthood. 1741: Dr. Ben Bikman On His Latest Keto Research On Alzheimer’s Disease Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

On Episode 1741 of the LLVLC Show, Dr. Ben Bikman stops by to talk with Jimmy about his latest Keto research on Alzheimer’s Disease.

“If someone has adopted a low-carb lifestyle and they have low insulin and their glucose levels are around 100, I say so what“.

    Dr. Ben Bikman

Benjamin Bikman earned a Ph.D. in Bioenergetics at East Carolina University with a focus on the adaptations to metabolic surgeries in obesity. He continued to explore metabolic disorders, with a particular focus on insulin resistance, as a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University of Singapore. As a professor at Brigham Young University and the director of its Diabetes Research Lab, Dr. Bikman has continued to study insulin, including its role as a regulator of human metabolism, as well as insulin’s relevance in chronic disease. In addition to his research and teaching, Dr. Bikman actively serves as a research mentor to undergraduate and graduate students. He and his students frequently present and publish their findings.

In this interview, Jimmy speaks with ketogenic diet researcher Dr. Ben Bikman (@benbikmanphd) who shares all about his latest findings on the relationship between nutrition and Alzheimer’s disease. Ben is the author of the book WHY WE GET SICK which is literally a primer on all things insulin resistance. This topic is discussed heavily in our conversation today since it’s a major factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

1740: Look AHEAD Study Reveals The Abysmal Failure Of The Eat Less, Move More Hypothesis Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

On Episode 1740 of the LLVLC Show, Jimmy takes a look at the failures of the Eat Less, Move More movement.

“You guys know that heart disease, type-2 diabetes, etc. are all in the same spectrum of the disease of insulin resistance.”

    Jimmy Moore

In this episode, Jimmy presents a NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN episode of his show JIMMY MAKES SCIENCE SIMPLE (http://www.instagram.com/jimmymakessciencesimple) to share with you about a new study you need to know about. It’s a study published in the January 2021 issue of the Obesity Journal entitled “Does Lifestyle Intervention Improve Health of Adults with Overweight/Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes: Findings from the Look AHEAD Randomized Trial” (Link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.23158).

The Look AHEAD Trial was originally attempting to see the efficacy of the “eat less, move more” concept on cardiovascular risk markers in those who are overweight or obese with Type 2 diabetes. They had a goal for the participants in the intervention wing of the study to lose 7% of their body weight through calorie restriction and incorporate 175 min/week of moderate exercise. But then something happened that made them shift gears in the midst of the study and it’s worthy of note–THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTERVENTION AND CONTROL GROUPS IN MOST HEALTH OUTCOMES! This is HUGE!

The most important health markers tracked, including cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, cognitive function, cognitive impairment, and cancer showed NO STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE with the control group. Despite this being the largest and most intense study on low-calorie diets with increased cardio exercise, it gave no cardiovascular benefit, it reduced lean muscle mass, and it actually led to more fragility fractures. Don’t miss the details on this brand new study that blows the lid off the fallacy of eat less, move more.

1738: Jimmy Moore And Hank Garner Talk About Keto In The Real World Jun 22, 2021
    Show notes

On today’s episode of the LLVLC Show, Jimmy is joined by Hank Garner to talk about what keto looks like in the real world.

“This is about getting healthy and maintaining health, not about looking a certain way.”

    Hank Garner

In today’s interview, Jimmy chats with his right-hand man in the LLVLC empire named Hank Garner who is an accomplished podcaster in his own right as the host of The Author Stories Podcast. A decade ago, Hank was a low-carb weight loss success story and started blogging and podcasting (“My Low Carb Journey”) about his incredible experience and success with this healthy way of eating. But…

As Hank started getting older (he’s one month older than Jimmy) and allowing in what he describes as the “carb creep,” it led to him to inevitably regaining weight–and now he’s ready to get serious about eating better again. This brand new “Keto In The Real World” Tuesday segment of the LLVLC podcast will air every couple of weeks to help keep Hank accountable and Jimmy will provide his running commentary and wisdom on Hank’s journey to help him fine-tune his reboot.

They both sincerely hope this is an encouragement to all of you who may feel like nobody truly understands your struggle. It can feel very ostracizing at times when you KNOW you’re following everything you’re hearing you need to do to lose weight and get healthy—and it’s simply not producing results for you. Jimmy and Hank think there are a lot of you who are in this boat and they want this Tuesday segment to be for YOU.

We see you and we’re here for you! It’s the real world side of keto that you’re not really hearing a lot of people talk about. Well WE WILL! This new featured segment on The LLVLC Show will seek to rectify that and give you hope again.
