Meditation is the Ultimate Rest Hack – Light Watkins : 580 Apr 02, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we get real with Light Watkins about meditation and why it’s so hard to get your body and your thoughts comfortable doing it. You’ll learn there’s no “right” way and no “wrong” way to meditate—just the way that works for you and keeps you coming back to it.

Light has been immersed in the meditation space for nearly two decades, first as a practitioner, then as an apprentice to his Vedic Meditation teacher, and finally as a teacher himself. But in the beginning, he spent several years sitting in uncomfortable positions with whirling thoughts and feeling like he was failing at meditation. He couldn’t settle his body or his mind.

He had to find his own sweet spot of comfort: “When I did that, it completely upgraded the quality of my experiences, and that's where I first had the tangible experience of bliss,” he says. And you can, too. Light explains how to put meditation in your life’s “rest” category, so it becomes both relatable and a practical application.

Another life category that’s a feature of today’s podcast is happiness. Light travels the world giving talks on happiness, inspiration, and meditation, as well as leading meditation trainings and retreats. He’s been featured in major media, taught celebrity clients and written two popular books. So, prepare to get comfy—with meditation and happiness—and learn how to incorporate more of both into your life.

Mental Strength Hacks for Everyone – Amy Morin : 579 Mar 28, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, instead of suggesting another “to-do” list, we’re looking at “to-don’t” lists. That’s right, subtracting things from your likely already-too-full life in order to make room for more ways you can be mentally strong, happy and successful.

Amy Morin is the bestselling author of three books about “13 Things” you don’t want to do that can actually increase your mental strength and help you perform optimally at everything you do. She’s a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and psychology professor who shared her own life story of adversity and becoming mentally strong in a TEDx talk (record-setting views), then a blog post (went viral), then three books on the subject—for people, for parents, for women.

A few of the “13 Things” discussed in today’s episode include:

    • How to recognize when you’re the only guest at your own pity party;
    • How to know when your risk-taking isn’t based on logic;
    • How to embrace vulnerability; and
    • How gender constructs of strength are often culture-specific.

And the biggie for everyone? Power. “Taking back your power is about acknowledging that you're in control of your time, you're in control of how you think, how you feel, and how you behave,” Amy says.

If you want to learn the single most important thing that mentally strong people don't do, listen to this episode.

Slow Down Aging with Stem Cells – Dr. Harry Adelson & Dr. Amy Killen : 578 Mar 26, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’ll learn about the stem cell theory of aging and what stem cells can do for you. They essentially have two superhuman powers and you’ll find out why that matters.

Back on the show are Dr. Harry Adelson and Dr. Amy Killen of Docere Clinics. In previous episodes, they’ve discussed the use of stem cell therapy for healing, pain conditions, erectile dysfunction and other health concerns. They are at the forefront of clinical stem cell use and treatments. On today’s show, they focus on the benefits of using stem cells to slow down the aging process.

“The two main contributors to aging are inflammation and oxidation,” says Dr. Adelson. “Your body's biologic aging really is a response to how well you can cope with and respond to inflammation and oxidation. Both of those processes are entirely controlled by stem cells.”

Dave recently underwent a “six-hands” full-body stem cell makeover and has the video to prove it on YouTube. He shares the specifics of those procedures — from injections to topical application and microneedling — with listeners and discusses the healing and change he’s experienced since the treatments.

“There's something called healthy aging … and that's the thing that I'm looking for,” Dave says.

So, listen in to find out more about the different types of stem cells, stem-cell mediated events, exosomes and growth factors, and how to turbocharge your own stem cells.

    The Nuance of No – Adam Grant, Ph.D. : 577 Mar 21, 2019
    Show notes

This episode of Bulletproof Radio features organizational psychologist Adam Grant, who brings a dynamic acumen to all of his work. He has been recognized as one of the world's 10 most influential management thinkers and named to Fortune's 40 under 40 list.

In today’s show, you’ll learn why burnout is thriving and people aren’t, and why burnout matters from a gender perspective. You’ll find out how doing more five-minute favors allows the 30,000-foot view of life to come into view and how nailing “no” frees you up while still allowing you to help others.

Our conversation about job design covers a lot of interesting ground, from earning “idiosyncrasy credits” to pitching your ideal role, to companies with no bosses. Adam poses the questions: “If you're an individual with creative ideas, how do you champion them effectively? And then, if you're a leader, how do you build a culture that welcomes original ideas, and then, makes them a reality?”

Adam’s a researcher, a top-rated professor at The Wharton School, a New York Times columnist, a TEDtalk favorite, and the author of three New York Times bestselling books. He’s also considered to be a leading expert on how we can find motivation and meaning in our work and live more generous and creative lives.

If you want to learn how to design work that works for your life, this episode is filled with practical value from beginning to end.

Intelligence is Not Enough: The Genius Zone - Dean Simonton : 576 Mar 19, 2019
    Show notes

This episode of Bulletproof Radio includes a surprising amount of laughter that makes the topic of intelligence and genius a fun listen.

Our guest is Dean Keith Simonton, Ph.D., a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of California-Davis. He’s known as the “Maverick Psychologist” who has been defying the establishment all of his nearly half-century career in the areas of genius, creativity, aesthetics, and leadership.

In this lively conversation, you’ll learn that intelligence needs a sprinkling of grit, creativity and imagination to flourish into genius. You’ll find out that taking risks matters: “In order to make discoveries, in order to invent new things, you have to be willing to try things out and fail.” You’ll discover, too, that creators (typically introverts) and leaders (typically extroverts) use their smarts in significantly different ways.

“I think the problem is that when people think that they don't have a genius level IQ,” Dr. Dean says. “They may think they're doomed or they're not going to be able to achieve much.” But, “you can't let the IQ score determine who you are.” His most recent book gives a “genius checklist” of tips for anyone to follow.

Dr. Dean studies the cognitive, personal, developmental, social, and cultural factors behind eminence, giftedness, and talent. He’s researched some of the greatest figures throughout history and examined why their achievements—in science, philosophy, literature, music, art, cinema, politics, and war—have stood the test of time.

Be open to today’s experience (hint… it’s a personality predictor of outstanding achievement) and ...

The Laws of Human Nature – Robert Greene : 575 Mar 14, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, one of my favorite authors is back on the show.

Robert Greene has written five New York Times bestsellers. One in particular, The 48 Laws of Power, changed the course of my professional life. His other books, including: The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, and Mastery, have gained a gained a broad following from war historians to hip-hop industry musicians.

Robert takes a deep and searing look at the inner workings of human behavior based on social and biological science, as well as many of the most powerful people throughout history. In his sixth and most recent book, The Laws of Human Nature, he focuses on people’s drives and motivations, even when they are unconscious of them. “Basically, we’re a social animal,” Robert says. “It’s deeply ingrained in our nature. When we’re not being the social animal that we were born to be, we pay a terrible price.”

This is a must-listen episode full of evocative human insights—you’ll learn the basis of envy and why it persists in social hierarchy. “Envy is complicated and it's slippery and it's hard to put your finger on it,” Robert says.

We also discuss early childhood as an underestimated developmental force; how gender rigidity limits your full potential; and the ways in which mortality awareness can be both comforting and freeing.

    Intuition is Not a Feeling - Joy Martina : 574 Mar 12, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, psychic psychologist Joy Martina demystifies the myths surrounding intuition. She explains how anyone can develop their psychic skills and fundamentally alter their life experience.

Before you decide this isn’t the episode for you, stay with us. We talk about intuition as a form of intelligence that’s not gender-specific.

Joy reminds us that Albert Einstein said intuition is a highest form of intelligence. He also says the intuitive mind is the sacred gift and the rational mind is the faithful servant. Joy believes that we've created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

Our conversation touches on “channeling,” as well as how to use your intuition to make better choices faster, starting with stepping out of the buzz and making time for solitude and silence. “When our brain is relaxed,” Joy says, “it's usually smarter. When our brain is able to focus, we have control over our mind rather than our mind having control over us. Then, we're actually able to train potential in ourselves.”

Also in this episode, you’ll learn how to:

    • Recognize the difference between emotions and intuition
    • Say no gracefully
    • Sync your left and right brain hemispheres using a simple technique called “the switch”
    • Forgive and release
    • Train your brain while sleeping
    • Fire your head brain, heart brain and gut brain in the right sequence to become more intuitive
    • Take power naps to increase energy and efficiency

“We can't be happy when we're not tuned into our intuition,” says Joy. “If we don't know what's right for us, if we don't feel that in us, if we're not connected to us, to our truth, then we'll never be truly happy. That's what intuition actually is—finding your truth.”

The Nervous System Circuitry of Safety, Sound and Gratitude – Stephen Porges : 573 Mar 07, 2019
    Show notes

Bulletproof Radio welcomes scientist Dr. Stephen Porges back to the show. He's known for his deep and profound understanding of the human nervous system and its application to real-life clinical settings.

Dr. Porges created the Polyvagal Theory, which explains the workings of the vagal nerve and links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behavior. He has authored and co-authored several books on the subject. For 25 years, his Polyvagal Theory has been leading to innovative treatments based on insights into the mechanisms mediating symptoms observed in behavioral, psychiatric, and physical disorders.

One of my favorite episodes of Bulletproof Radio was #264 when he and I talked about this theory. I encourage you to listen to that episode and check out the two Bulletproof Blog articles. I was so impressed with his research that I included it in my new book Game Changers, specifically Law #44, which is “Gratitude is Stronger than Fear.”

Dr. Porges also is the creator of a music-based intervention, the Safe and Sound Protocol™, which currently is used by more than 1200 therapists to improve spontaneous social engagement, to reduce hearing sensitivities, and to improve language processing, state regulation, and spontaneous social engagement.

In this new episode, we explore how sound, safety, environment and gratitude are all intimately connected to our nervous system circuitry.

“Your body, in safe environments, will start to spontaneously optimize those circuits,” explains Dr. Porges. “We need to structure narratives that have a degree of positivity, so that our nervous system doesn't feel too scared to evaluate it.”

We’ll be making links between Dr. Stephen’s work and fascinating brain-body interactions, often deeply rooted in our ancient biology. We introduce “neuroception,” find out how to structure environments for those who struggle with sensory processing issues, better understand how hearing frequencies affect adults and kids differently, and learn how to control our own heart rate variability.

Harnessing Autonomic Arousal to Think & Do Better – Andrew Huberman : 572 Mar 05, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, we talk about how you can increase cognitive capacity by leveraging your stress; how the brain is wired for fear; advances in virtual reality; and why a daily dose of real brain science on Instagram is good for just about everyone.

My guest is neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, Ph.D. He studies comparative neurology to better understand the human brain and human brain evolution. He’s also working to make neuroscience more accessible and relevant to people’s everyday life. And he’s in a particularly good position to do just that at Stanford School of Medicine where he’s an associate professor in the Department of Neurobiology and the Department of Ophthalmology. His own Huberman Lab performs clinical trials using molecular, genetic, physiological and virtual reality tools.

His work includes developing ways to regenerate the brain after injury and in neurodegenerative disorders, mainly those causing blindness. Another aspect of his research parses the mechanisms for stress, "courage" (adaptive action toward potential threats), and testing treatments and protocols for anxiety disorders and trauma.

Dr. Huberman has made numerous—and award-winning-- contributions to the fields of brain development, brain plasticity, and neural regeneration and repair.
