    Show notes

This is part 2 of a two-part bonus episode of Bulletproof Radio. Be sure to listen to part 1, Ketofast: Your Need-to-Know Guide #588.

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, the conversation takes a turn into the topics Dr. Mercola presented recently at the Upgrade Labs 6th Annual Biohacking Conference. Here are some highlights:

    • Eating after dark is not a good strategy, but there might be a window if you’re up late into the night.
    • REM sleep changes as you age
    • The value of a float tank
    • Heat shock proteins are a corollary to autophagy.
    • Chronic keto is not in your best interest, “Your body needs carbohydrates on a regular basis,” says Dr. Mercola.
    • The importance of insulin
    • Ideal body fat percentages for men and women
    • Recommended lab tests to quantify yourself
    • Stimulating your immune system
    • Wireless frequencies affect every life form on the planet

Dr. Mercola is an osteopathic physician who began exploring the world of natural medicine in the early 1990s after spending several years working within the conventional medicine model. His whole-person approach to health and his focus on preventive care led him to pioneer health information on the Internet where www.mercola.com has been consistently rated a top natural health website since launching 22 years ago.

He’s also a prolific author of more than a dozen books, three of which are New York Times bestsellers. He newest book is titled: “KETOFAST: Rejuvenate Your Health with a Step-by-Step Guide to Timing Your Ketogenic Meals.” He’s also authored numerous medical articles and is frequently featured on national media outlets.

    Show notes

This is part 1 of a two-part bonus episode of Bulletproof Radio. Dave and Dr. Joseph Mercola go from fasting to flying in an immensely specific conversation. They go deep into details, while at the same time offering up practical tips.

This is just some of what you’ll learn:

    • Which type of fasting may be right for you
    • How polyphenols activate autophagy
    • How supplement and nutrient absorption rates differ by delivery method and why intrarectal methods are best for some
    • Why metabolic flexibility matters
    • Why mitochondria up- or down-regulate their functions, depending on the antioxidants they are producing
    • About the best cellular level travel hacks and the shenanigans your ketones and mitochondria are up to in the air. When ionizing radiation damage sets free radicals careening off your body’s runway, Dave and Dr. Mercola explain how a bevy of acronyms—PARP, ADP, NAD, DNA—get involved to repair the damage.

    Interpersonal Neurobiology: A Systems-Thinking Approach to Optimal Health – Dr. Dan Siegel : 587 Apr 25, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, you’ll find out how interpersonal neurobiology looks at the vital connections among:

    • Our mind;
    • Our embodied brain (meaning the functions of our body, biochemical functions, physiological functions, neural functions); and
    • Our relationships (with other people, with nature, with the planet).

These, say Dr. Dan Siegel, “form the foundation for how we try to understand what life on Earth is about, what human life is, and how we can try to direct it in a way that supports well-being.” Putting identity, attachment, and survival together literally shapes the health of your body.

Dr. Siegel comes to Bulletproof Radio fresh off the stage at the 6th Annual Biohacking Conference at the Beverly Hilton where he gave an exceptional presentation on the science and practice of presence. For more than two decades, he’s taught clinical psychiatry at UCLA and is a best-selling author and co-author of more than a dozen books. He’s the founding co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center and the founder and executive director of the Mindsight Institute, as well as the medical director of the Lifespan Learning Institute, and the founding editor of the Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology.

The particular field of neurobiology he discusses with Dave is dedicated to understanding the brain, subjective experience, and the ways in which the brain is altered by experience. It stays grounded in science but not limited to what any given scientific field suggests, he explains. “We try to combine all the fields of science, from math and physics all the way to sociology and anthropology, into one framework.”

Two established realms of physics, Newtonian and Quantum, get a lot of attention in today’s show. Nine domains of integration do, too. Why? In a nutshell, we need to stop being isolated nouns and start being interconnected verbs. That’s the only way we’ll reach optimal health. And three pillars—focused attention, opened awareness, and kind intention—actually slow aging. Research proves it.

As with life and biohacking, “When things are going well, they're in a state of harmony,” says Dr. Siegel. “When things aren't going well, they're either in chaos or rigidity or some combination of both.”

In today’s far-reaching conversation, the science of the mind meets the science of the body. Take a listen to find out more about the Wheel of Awareness and how to live, lead, love and learn from the Plane of Possibility.

Stacking Biohacks: In Tune with Body and Mind - Rick Rubin : 585 Apr 18, 2019
    Show notes

For this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dave talked with legendary music producer Rick Rubin at the famed Shangri-La Recording Studio in Malibu, California.

Rick coaxes creativity and musical magic from diverse artists across multiple genres, such as hip-hop, heavy metal, pop, country, rock & roll, alternative, and more. He’s known for his Zen-like demeanor, private nature and nearly four decades-long influence on music.

His formula for success isn’t a formula at all. “We're really at the mercy of the forces of the universe to control the process,” Rick says, “and we just have to be patient and be open and allow it to happen.”

He doesn’t have a formula for biohacking his way to a 130-pound weight loss, either, but being open to experimentation got him there. Take a listen to Rick’s journey to better health in which he reconsidered veganism, discovered ice baths as meditation, and embraced loving kindness.

There’s plenty more biohacking goodness covered, too, like intranasal red light, biophoto modulation, cerebral electrical stimulation, Carbogen, deuterium depleted water, and peptides. "I don't need to understand the science of why a biohack works or doesn't work,” Rick says. “I just want it to work.”

Today's guest, Hal Elrod, first came on Bulletproof Radio in episode 176, (Hal Elrod: Be Happier, Healthier, & More Productive), when he shared his extraordinary personal story of surviving a near-fatal car accident at age 20 in which he was clinically dead for six minutes and sustained extensive injuries. His recovery was miraculous.

He went on to become a Hall of Fame business achiever, international speaker and success coach, and author of “The Miracle Morning,” which has been translated into 34 languages, sold more than 1 million copies, and is practiced daily by more than 500,000 people around the world.

Since Hal was last on the show, he’s had another near-death experience. He was diagnosed with aggressive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in October 2016. After pairing intensive chemotherapy with intensive alternative therapies, his cancer has gone into remission. Another miracle.

Radical Regeneration: Neurosurgery Meets Energy Medicine – Marcella Madera : 582 Apr 09, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dave talks with neurosurgeon Dr. Marcella Madera about innovations in the field of integrative, regenerative spine care, and how she’s using stem cells in her treatments. She’s currently one of the only spine surgeons in the country to offer stem cell treatments using a patient’s own harvested cells to promote healing.

Listeners may remember that she was the third set of six hands during Dave’s whole-body stem cell makeover. (For those new to the show, more on that here and here.) In today’s episode, Dr. Marcella describes—in detail—what she did with stem cells along Dave’s spine. She also makes exosomes fun: “They are little nanoparticles full of awesome, regenerative juice,” she says.

Understanding and treating spinal disease is the focus of Dr. Marcella’s professional medical practice. She approaches that work by combining surgical and holistic perspectives. Her expertise comes from rigorous training and background, including a Johns Hopkins fellowship, as well as extensive travel throughout Europe and the U.S. to learn progressive techniques and regenerative medicine practices.

Today’s conversation also pivots into preparing patients for surgery and caring for them afterward in ways that are unconventional, and this is where Dr. Marcella’s integrative approach really shines. She addresses sleep, inflammation, nutrition, movement, stress management, and energy modalities for pain management—not just the nitty gritty of the surgical procedure.

You’ll be captivated by Dr. Marcella’s viewpoint: “We're on the verge in the next 20-50 years of having a totally different understanding of the biology of the body,” she says. “I think that's where we're going—figuring out how to use external energy plus regenerative medicine together.”

Merchants of Truth and Light: Losing the Nobel Prize - Brian Keating : 581 Apr 04, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, astrophysicist and cosmologist Brian Keating, Ph.D., talks about the high-pressure world of science. He knows that world well and gives a firsthand account of his experience of loss, failure, resiliency and humility in his book, “Losing the Nobel Prize: A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science's Highest Honor.”

Brian’s childhood fascination with the night sky has led him to build and deploy some of the world’s most advanced and powerful telescopes and detectors. He does this so he can search for the literal edge of our universe and cosmic origins. His work takes him to some of the most extreme environments on the planet. You’ll learn about the high-performance hacks he and his team use to manage these conditions.

Today’s episode covers topics designed to fire up your thinking. Here are a few teasers from Brian:

    • Science and business: “Science is messy, and science is chaotic, and then oftentimes, unknowable, and it has many of the same features of the business world.”
    • Brains and computers: “The brain is the most phenomenal computer in the world and in the known universe.”
    • Time travel: “If time travel is possible, it would beggar a lot of questions.”
    • Infinity: “It's the most baffling concept that we think it's only accessible to human consciousness.”
    • The end of the world as we know it: "Keep paying your taxes just in case."
    • Life’s secret weapon: “Curiosity. Be interested in literally everything.”
