050 | Kirsten Tobey from Superstore Failure to $130 Million in Revenue

Kirsten Tobey founded Revolution Foods in 2006 with co-founder and CEO Kristin Groos Richmond while in graduate school at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. Revolution Foods, now over $130 million in revenue, today serves nearly 3 million healthy meals per week to students in 30 cities across 15 US states and distributes a line of retail food products to over 3000 grocery stores nationwide. Kirsten continues to steward the mission and drive the vision for the company. Kirsten spearheaded the company's expansion into the retail/packaged goods space and has led the company's efforts on thought leadership, nutrition strategy and impact.

Are you afraid of having the tough conversations? Do you have a client that is high-maintenance or an employee who is sucking you dry?

This week's guest, Kirsten Tobey, shares how she's taken those difficult conversations and used them to further her and her business. Kirsten quickly learned that when you decide to let the clients go that are sucking you and your business dry, you can actually put your energy and focus into the things that will help you and your company grow.

Kirsten and her company, Revolution Foods, have had the opportunity to be sold in Walmart, but she and her partner found out the hard way, that being in a superstore just wasn't going to work. Their healthy, top of the line ingredients led their product to cost too much, which is often not what the consumers of Walmart want.

If your ready to learn how having those painful conversations can actually change the trajectory of your business, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN!

Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

Should You Give Away Free Content? | Coffee Is For Closers

It's one of those eternal questions for entrepreneurs and online business owners. How much of your content should you give away for free? Is it even worth your time and effort to create and share something if you're not going to sell it or get paid?

Most of all, you have to wonder...why would anyone pay to work with you if they can get your stuff without paying?

Here's the skinny with free content: it's not about giving away the store. It's about getting your message out to as many people as possible. It's about sharing enough to let people get to know you while reserving the best of you for your most committed clients. It's about giving your audience something unique and useful without devaluing your paid services. If you can provide value that's useful and purposeful then give some of it away for free!

In other words, if you use it properly, free content can be a big-time investment in your business. It's some of the best advertising around, and it doesn't have to cost you exorbitant amounts of time and money.

On this episode, I share with you how to use free content to grow your audience, share your passion, and help more people. And of course, how to find clients while you're at it!

    - Why creating and sharing free content is well worth the time and effort

    - What your free content should (and should not) include

    - How to set boundaries with free content (how much is too much?)

    - What to do if some prospects expect too much free advice

How To Reject A Potential Client | Coffee is for Closers Apr 28, 2018

How To Reject A Potential Client | Coffee is for Closers

On today's episode, we're talking about how to reject a potential client. You probably know what it's like to be turned down by a client. It happens to us all in the business world. But did you know that when it comes to sales, the NO can go both ways?

Here's the deal: Sales is all about relationships. Just like any other relationship, if it's going to be a harmonious one, both parties have to be happy. And just because you're the one asking for money doesn't mean that you're obligated to take every Tom, Dick, and Harry that shows up on a sales call.

In other words, YOU have as much right to say NO to a deal as the client does. It's just as important that the seller be as satisfied in the relationship as the buyer. And if you take on clients that aren't the right fit, it won't be long before EVERYBODY involved is unhappy.

Maybe you said YES to the wrong client because rent was due and you needed a sale. Maybe it was because you were afraid another prospect wouldn't show up. Maybe you said YES because you're just too darn nice to say NO.

All of these reasons don't justify taking on a less than ideal client. The quality of your work will plummet. Your stress level will soar. Eventually you might wind up resentful. And you might even ruin a client relationship for good. That's a pretty hefty price to pay for the sake of a sale.

On this episode you'll learn everything you need to know about saying NO to less than ideal clients, including:

    - Why sometimes you have to tell a prospect NO

    - When to pull the plug on the pitch (the sure-fire cues)

    - How to say NO to a client without stepping on their toes

    - Why saying NO will help you skyrocket your value and worth

This week's guest on Success Unfiltered, Amanda Bond, has too! She's received a White Hot NO, only she didn't let it get her down. Instead, Amanda takes the information she's learned from her NO's and puts them on a spreadsheet to analyze.

Amanda is a self-proclaimed spreadsheet and data nerd. She takes every NO and places it on a spreadsheet so that she can analyze and learn from them. She wants to figure out what works and what doesn't, and then implement different sales methods into practice in the future.

Amanda isn't superhuman, the NO's do affect her, but she's learned that it's important to use your resilience muscle and remind yourself to step back and have a process for reflection.

Give yourself the time and space to feel the feelings from hearing NO, and then once you've done that, it's time to analyze the data!

If you're ready to stop becoming overwhelmed with every NO, then this episode is a MUST LISTEN!

P.S. What Do Successful Entrepreneurs Know (That Most Entrepreneurs Don't)? That rejection in sales doesn't mean failure. It means that you're that much closer to the success that you desire...as long as you don't quit! But how do you put yourself back together when a dream deal goes south? Grab your copy of my checklist "5 Ways To Come Back From Sales Rejection" and learn how you can harness the power of NO for yourself!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Amanda.
    • Amanda shares her story of starting out in corporate sales with PepsiCo and Labatt.
    • Amanda's always had the heart of an entrepreneur, but tried to go the traditional route of college to eventually working for PepsiCo as a sales distributor.
    • Working at PepsiCo taught Amanda sheer tenacity, to never give up and to count her NO's until she got to YES.
    • Finding someone who can keep you motivated is also important when working a sales job.
    • Amanda left PepsiCo for love. ;) It was her out that catapulted her into entrepreneurialism.
    • Amanda shares her biggest, most devastating NO came when she was turned down to travel to Thailand with her school, but she didn't give up!
    • One way that Amanda is growing her business this year is by making connections and getting to know new people.
    • Amanda learned at an early age that every NO is just a data point, and that emotion should be removed.
    • "My initial reaction to a NO is to emotionally react when there's negative feedback, or I want to emotionally react when there's a NO. I'm not a robot that's superhuman." ~ Amanda Bond
    • Give yourself time and space to feel disappointed when hearing a NO, but then step back and start looking at the data, and analyze it to see what can be done differently.
    • Amanda shares how she does gives herself space to feel disappointed, and then uses it as a data point, with a real life example from a previous client of hers.
    • Amanda gets vulnerable and shares her most accomplished NO, which involves a huge influencer and a WHITE HOT NO (which is a clue to who wanted to work with her).
    • "Sometimes, you just gotta check in with your gut and your intuition, and it's going to tell you to do something weird." ~ Amanda Bond

How Do You Get Over the Fear of Rejection? | Coffee Is For Closers

Today's episode is all about how to get over the fear of rejection. We talked about overcoming rejection in general, but what do you do when you're too scared of rejection to even try?

Being passed over for the sale is just part of life for any entrepreneur or business owner. It happens to the best of us, and the more you practice dealing with rejection, the less you're going to let it get you down.

But what do you do when being turned down hits you just a little bit too hard? How do you bounce back after a particularly biting rejection takes the wind out of your sales more than you thought it would?

Believe it or not, that happens to even the most successful entrepreneurs. The good news is that even the worst of rejections doesn't have to slow you down for long. After all, rejections don't show up to make you miserable. They're actually an opportunity for redirection, expansion, and growth.

They can also help you determine the root causes of your fears, both in business and in life. And once you understand your deepest fears, you can take them on, work through them, and let them go.

Turns out that entrepreneurship is one of the best self-development tools there is. And rejection is one of entrepreneurship's greatest teachers, if you allow it to be!

On this episode of Coffee Is For Closers, I show you all the ways that you can put yourself back together after the NO and come back stronger than ever.

In this episode you will learn:

    - Why you should NEVER dwell on your fear of rejection

    - Why your attitude about the sales process is crucial

    - How your fear of rejection in sales could be fear of something else

    - What you can do to change how you perceive rejection (and move past it a lot faster)

046 | Shelly Ehler Tells the Truth of Shark Tank

Shelly Ehler is an inspiring entrepreneur who took a simple idea, believed it with all her heart and made it come to life! She is the inventor of the ShowNo towel and was featured on ABC's Emmy nominated reality show, Shark Tank. Shelly had three "Sharks" fighting over her and is the only entrepreneur in the show's history to ever leave with a check in her hand. Her towel has also been featured on The Today Show, The View and Good Morning America. Shelly's story of overcoming challenges and following the voice of her heart is truly inspiring. Her motto is, "Dream it, Believe it, Let it Go."

Have you ever felt like giving up on your entrepreneurial journey?

If you want to overcome that feeling, it's time to build a strong support system full of people who will support you and believe in your work no matter what is thrown at you.

From the very beginning of Shelly's journey as an entrepreneur people questioned her or told her, her idea was silly. She never allowed it to get to her because she knew she had the unending support of her husband and a few good friends.

Shelly experienced some major ups and downs, one major down involved Disney and one of the sharks from Shark Tank! But, she was able to come back from it as strong as ever because of the support of her family and friends.

If you're ready to build support in those critical moments, this episode with Shelly Ehler is a MUST LISTEN!

Enjoy, thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

How Do You Get Over Your NO's in Sales? | Coffee Is For Closers

On this episode, we continue to discuss the topic of overcoming the NO in sales. This is the start of overcoming rejections and using my best sales secrets to turn a NO into a YES!

What are the reasons behind the rejection? This is the question that all entrepreneurs, salespeople, & startups need to think about. It's not about your fear, your talent or your value, it's all about the people you talk to, your clients. Once you start to think about them and including their values and concerns, you will figure out how to better provide the products or service they need, more importantly, turn those NO's to YES's!

As Bo Bennet says, "Rejection is nothing more than a necessary step in the pursuit of success!"

I'm not saying it's easy to be told NO. But if you can get over yourself, see the message in the madness, and USE it to grow into an unstoppable entrepreneur (and person), it can be a real blessing. You just have to see through its disguise.

On this episode you will learn:

    - Why rejection puts you in the company of the world's most successful entrepreneurs

    - How to take being told NO a lot less personally

    - What the "Magic Why" is in any rejection (and how to use it)

Want to make sure that you always bounce back from the dreaded NO? If you're ready to let every rejection become nothing more than a redirection, then this guide is for you! Check out "The Beauty of NO: 3 Ways To Get The Most Out of Business Rejections." In this guide, I walk you through what rejection means, what you can learn from it, and how it helps you improve your chances of getting the YES in the future. Check it out right HERE!
