How to Deal with Uncertain Clients | Coffee is for Closers

Not too long ago, I had to say NO to a potentially huge client. And I can't say I regret it for a moment.

I'd been talking to a couple of guys who seemed to have a good thing going in their business. Good, that is, to the tune of nearly one MILLION dollars in revenue.

The only trouble was, they weren't making any money. In fact, looking at their bottom line, for all intents and purposes, their business was broke.

How did this happen? And just where did that million dollars disappear to?

I knew what their problem was. I knew the exact reason they were bringing in the cash but bleeding away the bottom line. Most of all, I knew exactly what they needed and how I could help them.

But I had to say NO, wish them nothing but the best, and move along to the next prospect.

    Why?

It wasn't because I was feeling spiteful. It's not that I didn't want to see them succeed. (Believe me, I did. And I knew just how they could do it, too.)

But the truth is my friends, in business, just like dating, there are such things as dealbreakers. And these guys displayed a major one, in my book.

And as irony would have it, the reason I turned them down was the exact reason that their million dollar business was a sinking ship that was taking on even more water.

Why did I send these guys on their way? On this week's Coffee Is For Closers I tell you the reasons why sometimes you have to pass on what seems like a sweet deal in favor of your own standards and boundaries.

Check out this episode and find out why I said NO to a MILLION dollar client. And I'll also share what YOU can do to avoid the pitfalls of those uncertain clients who play you hot and cold!

P.S. WHY is your WHY Such A Big Deal? If you're an entrepreneur, you need to stay up for the game at all times. Your success or failure is all up to you, and sometimes, even the best of us fall off track. How do come back from a great fall? By remembering WHY you started. Remembering WHY you're passionate about what you do. And keeping that purpose at the center of everything you do. Can your WHY do that? Let's find out! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Scott Carson.
    • Scott takes us back about 10 years to when he was working for someone else in his J-O-B.
    • Scott shares the story of how his boss wanted to pay him to train someone else to do what Scott was so good at - buying non-performing mortgages, but didn't want to give the job to Scott himself.
    • The boss turning Scott down, was just the slap in the face that Scott needed to set off on his own venture.
    • For six months Scott spent time reading personal and professional development as well as putting his knowledge to the test.
    • Scott explains what his company does and how it works.
    • The biggest NO that Scott received was when he was trying to buy a portfolio with over 100 assets, and the investor he was working with walked away. (Scott shares the whole story in this episode).
    • Scott turns each of his NO's into a game. He tells himself that each NO is a not right now, but not a permanent NO.
    • When looking for investors, Scott advises that you go for mid-size fish, not the whales. (Scott explains this analogy in this episode).
    • When Scott was looking for the mid-sized fish, he had a method to how he chose who to reach out to - listen closely to find out more!
    • "Seek counsel, and not advice." ~ Scott Carson
    • Scott knew that if he kept going and going and calling people he would eventually hear a YES.
    • Only 48% of salespeople will reach out to a prospect more than once. The sale is all in the follow-up!
    • Michelle and Scott talk about the movie Wall Street.
    • A good piece of advice, when speaking with your prospect, ask them when a good time you should follow-up, and then do it!
    • Scott is a firm believer in the personal touch - sending thank you cards and other small gifts.
    • Scott shares his story of how during his second year in business, he hit a dry spell, and how he considered going back to his old job.
    • Scott tells Michelle what he would advise his younger self.

How to Get Over Your Fear of Rejection | Coffee is for Closers Jul 07, 2018

How to Get Over Your Fear of Rejection | Coffee is for Closers

It doesn't really matter what we're talking about, in business or in life. The number one game-stopper tends to be that four-letter word that torments us all from time to time.

Of course, I'm talking about FEAR.

When you run a business, you've got to have sales or you don't have a business. But sometimes that fear of asking for the sale outweighs the need to keep your business afloat.

After all...what if the customer says NO?

When it comes to fear of rejection, the struggle is real. At least we think it is, anyway! But trust me, being told NO is nothing to fear. In fact, it's something to be celebrated, and for MANY reasons.

Being rejected means that you're actually in the game. It means that you're learning from your actions and improving your sales processes. It means that you're getting closer to the success that you really want.

But if you don't even ask for fear of being shut down, nothing will happen. That's a guarantee.

We're not going to let that happen to you, though! On this episode, I give you the lowdown on WHY you might fear rejection in sales, HOW you can get past that fear and ask for the sale anyway, and WHAT you can do to recover from the dreaded NO (and come back even stronger!).

Everyone feels the fear. The only difference between successful entrepreneurs is that they take action anyway. Let me show you how YOU can be that entrepreneur who turns fear into success!

If a prospect gives you the brush-off, how can you bounce back, stay strong, and learn from it without falling into despair? 058 | Kara Goldin Teaches Us How to Find a Hint of Success!

Kara Goldin is the founder and CEO of hint, a healthy lifestyle brand that produces the leading unsweetened flavored water, as well as a scented sunscreen spray that is oxybenzone and paraben-free. She also recently launched the podcast Unstoppable, where she interviews founders, entrepreneurs and disruptors across various industries.

How did you feel the last time a massive deal went under? Did you start to tumble out of control, thinking your business was a failure?

This week's guest, Kara Goldin, experienced some major struggles within her business in the very early stages. It was overwhelming and left Kara feeling like she'd never get to see her version of success. She even tried giving her company away to a Coca-cola executive.

Kara realized it was time to turn that all around and start celebrating the small wins that were occurring everyday around her.

When Kara was struggling to figure out how to get her drink on the shelves of conventional grocery stores, she began feeling down and depressed, but quickly turned that around by looking at her small wins. For instance, something as simple as building her list and portfolio of connections that she had.

This was enough to propel Kara forward and keep pursuing her dream of making her business a true success!

What small wins have happened this week that you haven't even given a second thought to?

If you're only looking at the big picture, and want to start celebrating the little wins, then this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN!

Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

P.S. Celebrate Your Rejections In Business! Why? Because the more you get told NO, the closer you are to a YES. True story. Rejection doesn't mean failure. It means that you're taking the steps that'll ensure your success! Don't let NO stop you. Let me show you how to keep going! Grab your copy of my FREE Checklist "5 Ways To Come Back From Sales Rejection" and turn that NO into a WIN!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Kara Goldin.
    • Kara shares a quick synopsis of who she is and a bit about her company.
    • Kara shares the first big NO she received after getting a big win of getting into Whole Foods.
    • Buyer after buyer kept telling Kara NO, and it was frustrating because no one knew where her drink fit, and no one wanted to create a new category. Kara tells the full story in this episode.
    • The switch went off in Kara's head and she realized that she needed to start focusing on getting her beverage into places where other consumers might be. Trying to get into the conventional grocery stores was like beating a dead horse.
    • Large grocery chains take $60 to $90 million from the soda chains, so that they get the prime real estate, which is why it's tough to get on the drink shelves in retail.
    • Kara heard 6 or 7 big NO's before she decided to stop trying to get into grocery stores.
    • The big shift happened for Kara when she realized she needed to focus on getting some small wins under her belt, which would eventually lead to the big wins.
    • Book: The Score Takes Care of Itself - by: Bill Walsh
    • The small wins helped Kara organize her thoughts in regards to sales.
    • Kara shares the 3 big lessons she learned to help her move her in a different sales direction then she had been headed.
    • A certain amount of your time in business should be dedicated to getting out of the office and meeting new people, according to Kara (I happen to agree!).
    • Kara's biggest NO before things started to turn around happened when she was about 6 months in. It has to do with creating a shelf-stable water and keeping it free from preservatives. She shares the full story!
    • At one point, Kara was so frustrated she tried to give her company away to an exec at Coca-cola.
    • After that conversation, she learned some great strategies just by listening to what the Coca-cola exec had to say, even though he was negative.
    • Kara shares how they came to decide to pasteurize their water so that they could flavor it without preservatives and keep it shelf-stable.
    • Kara's big lesson was that you can learn from each other, even retail categories that don't directly relate to your business.
    • "Stop putting people on a pedestal. It doesn't matter how much experience someone has, they were once where you were" ~ Kara Goldin.
    • Kara believes that no matter what response you get when it comes to advice or trying to get your products out there, you should always keep your chin up and be professional. Let it motivate you to go forward and grow in other ways.
    • Kara shares what she would tell her younger self.

P.S.Celebrate Your Rejections In Business! Why? Because the more you get told NO, the closer you are to a YES. True story. Rejection doesn't mean failure. How to Get Paid What You're Worth | Coffee is for Closers

One thing that I ALWAYS maintain is that it's vital to own your value and charge what you're worth. But that often leads to another question: what is VALUE, anyway? How do you know if you're "good enough" as you are, or if "adding value" just means creating more extraneous STUFF?

It's a bit of a conundrum. We talk about bringing more value, but nobody really defines "value" in a way that is concise, understandable, and actionable.

That's where my friend, colleague, Master Sales Strategist Shameca Tankerson comes in. Shameca joined us this week for a special edition of Coffee Is For Closers, and it was one of the most innovative episodes to date!

Shameca shared with us some revolutionary ideas about knowing your TRUE value, charging your worth, and raising your rates WITHOUT an apology needed. She answers the question of what VALUE really means once and for all, and with such elegant simplicity that it will knock your socks off. You won't want to miss it!

    • One gym wanted Jason to "beef" up to fit the position better, but he refused, instead he found a gym that valued him for the qualities he brought to the table.
    • At a young age, Jason learned that expertise and knowledge don't really matter in the fitness industry, they'd rather have personality and experience.
    • Jason's most devastating NO occurred while he was still in college. He was working towards earning his PhD. and failed the oral part of the exam twice, before he finally passed on the third try. He shares the full story in this interview!
    • It was tough for Jason to keep pushing through the failures, but he wasn't willing to give up all the hard work he'd already put in, so he kept pushing through.
    • The most accomplished NO that Jason experienced wasn't just one NO, it was a mixture of the many NO's he received through the years. Jason knew that it was a numbers game and that fitness is his life, so he just kept pushing through every single one of the NO's he received.
    • When publishing books, Jason received many NO's from publishers, 5 to 6 per book he's written.
    • Jason never let any single NO stop him from going on to the next, or the next, or the next publisher. He kept pushing until he found a publisher that wanted to work with him and his book.
    • One thing that Jason has done that's helped him stand out in his industry is get his PhD. because it shows his expertise & differentiates him from others in the field.
    • Another thing that you can do to make yourself stand out is to find out what people want or need and then fulfill that need.
    • When businesses come and approach Jason and ask him to be an ambassador, he will often tell them NO, because it doesn't align with what it is he wants to do with his life. He works hard to stay laser focused on his journey and goals.
    • Jason shares what he would tell his younger self.

056 | Laura Roeder Shares How a Tiny Octopus Got Her to $5M!

Laura Roeder is the founder of Edgar, a social media automation tool designed to prevent status updates from going to waste. Laura has given talks at conferences like BlogHer and South by Southwest, and has spoken about the value of independent entrepreneurship at the White House. She's also appeared in Forbes, Fast Company, Mashable, CNET, and other major publications.

Does it ever feel like some mundane rule is holding you back from fully taking the leap in your business?

This week's guest, Laura Roeder, believes (and I agree), that sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Sometimes you need start taking action and then ask for forgiveness later.

Laura has bootstrapped Meet Edgar to $5 Million in revenue, which is an incredible feat. However, "only" making $5 Million in revenue was holding her back from networking events that were looking for bigger, more profitable businesses.

That didn't stop Laura, though! She went right ahead and applied to events that were looking for businesses making $10 Million or more. Want to know what happened? She was accepted! They were happy to bring her to the event because they wanted to have smaller businesses that were on track for major growth.

If Laura hadn't broken the rules and applied for these events (that was technically out of her reach), she never would have had the opportunity.

What are YOU holding YOURSELF back from?

If you're tired of holding yourself back because you're afraid to step on toes by breaking the rules, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN!

Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

Special thanks goes out to Laura Roeder for taking the time to chat with Michelle. Be sure to join us next week for our next new episode!

P.S. Why Do Most Business Strategies Fail? It's not because they don't work. It's because you're not READY for them to work. Before you can succeed, you've got to believe in yourself. And most of us don't know how. But that's all about to change! Let me show you my 3 best mindset hacks to help you raise your vibe, shift your thinking, and ultimately ROCK your business. Grab your copy right HERE and start believing in yourself, for REAL this time!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Laura Roeder.
    • Laura shares how she and her team came up with the name, "Meet Edgar."
    • When Laura was 22 years old she went to a networking event where 15 minute business coaching was provided. The "advice" Laura was given helped spur her career to much greater things (she shares the full story in this interview).
    • If Laura is feeling down over receiving a NO, or hearing awful feedback, she takes some time to reflect on the fact that we all have insecurities and that these insecurities don't matter in the grand scheme of things.
    • Laura firmly believes that you do not need to be more experienced or have more success under your belt before you start taking major leaps in your business.
    • Laura shares how she attended an event that was meant for businesses making $10 million or more in revenue, and Meet Edgar was only at $5 Million in revenue.
    • If you're ever trying to attend a conference, Laura suggests trying to pitch yourself as a speaker. The event may say NO, or they could say YES. You don't know without asking.
    • "Entrepreneurs get the idea that rules don't apply to us, because we start to see that so many of the limitations that people perceive are not real." ~ Laura Roeder
    • Laura says that she's never been intimidated by people older than her or of those in power. She always thinks, "What's the worst that could happen?"
    • "Ask for forgiveness, not permission." ~ Laura Roder
    • Laura's most accomplished NO occurred recently when she was out trying to find investors for her new company, Ropig. She'd never done this before because she bootstrapped Meet Edgar.
    • Laura was so intimidated by the whole fund raising process that she put all of her eggs in one basket with only one investor. You'll have to listen to learn how it turned out!
    • Laura shares how she managed to come up with $350,000 in just 30 days!
    • No matter what you're working on, Laura believes that you must give everything your all, within your own constraints.
    • Laura started as a freelance web designer but began to struggle to understand how she was going to keep growing her company when her plate was already so full. Laura shares how she had to say good-bye to her clients and start taking her business in a different direction.
    • Laura talks about what the "anchor client" is and why they can sometimes be problematic.
    • Laura shares what she would tell her younger self.
