055 | Ernie Bray Bootstrapped His Way to $17 Million in Revenue

Ernie Bray is an award-winning Entrepreneur & CEO and expert on leadership, social media, entrepreneurship and business strategy. He led his company (AutoClaims Direct) to six annual rankings on the Inc. 5000, four years on Deloitte's Technology Fast-500 and Entrepreneur's "Best Entrepreneurial Companies In America". In addition to leading his insurance technology company, he is an author & speaker who believes in helping others build and drive their own success.

Does it ever feel like your prospecting efforts are going nowhere? That every time you reach out to someone you'd love to work with, they tell you they're not interested, or you hear crickets?

Do you ever follow-up or do you just let things go?

This week's guest, Ernie Bray's company had been around for over 20 years, but his success wasn't instantaneous. Ernie had to work hard for every client and advancement he made.

Ernie wasn't interested in bringing on investors, so in the beginning he bootstrapped and would re-invest the money he made back into the business. For the first year in business, he personally made ZERO dollars!

In the beginning, insurance companies weren't interested in working with Ernie and his company because he had no reputation. They had no idea what he would bring to the table, which led Ernie to quickly learn that in order to get the YES's he wanted, he had to start following up!

It was with one of those consistent follow-ups that Ernie was able to eventually secure a large insurance carrier and has been working with them for over 7 years!

If you're tired of feeling like your prospect pipeline is empty and you're ready to learn how to effectively follow-up, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN!

Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

P.S. How Do You Close More Deals And Make More Sales? It's one of the easiest and most effective ways to close more deals, yet SO many business owners overlook it entirely. I'm talking about FOLLOW UP. Let me show you 7 ways that following up can explode your sales and change your business!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Ernie.
    • Ernie shares a 30 second look into what he does.
    • Ernie shares a quick look into how the claim process works for his company.
    • Can you imagine bootstrapping a company from nothing to $17M in revenue? Ernie's done exactly this with his company.
    • Ernie shares why he started in inside sales versus going right to outside sales.
    • As a competitive athlete, Ernie tried to get promoted within his company to do outside sales, but he was turned down a few times, before he was eventually fired (he shares the full story).
    • After inside sales, Ernie tried to become an insurance adjuster and did not enjoy the cubicle job. He tried to move up in the company by taking the test to be income management, however he failed by 2 points. This was the turning point when he decided to start his own business.
    • Ernie shares what he does instead of sitting around and moping, when he hears a NO.
    • When Ernie started his business he had no reputation so he kept hearing NO after NO.
    • With no reputation to his name, Ernie would go to insurance conferences and networking events and get small meetings with companies.
    • Ernie had a meeting with an insurance carrier in San Diego, they hired him to take on the most difficult area to work claims, and this was Ernie's in. The reputation of his company and their success started to spread and others started giving them claims to work.
    • Ernie had resilience, despite being told NO many times he kept ignoring them and remaining persistent and following-up.
    • Ernie shares how worn down he felt at times when he wasn't experiencing success.
    • Ernie turned to his competitive athletic background to lift himself up, when things weren't going well.
    • Ernie's most accomplished NO came when he had little reputation. A large insurance carrier told him that his company had something that others did not. They were under contract and couldn't work with him at the time, but they did eventually come around. (This NO was worth almost $2 Million)
    • Ernie shares his tried and true method for following-up with clients.
    • After not loving sales earlier in his career, Ernie now really enjoys the process.
    • Ernie had to flip the script and let a needy, overbearing client go.
    • Ernie shares what he would tell his younger self.

How To Take Business Risks Without Really Trying | Coffee is for Closers

How do you feel when you hear the word "risk?"

It might feel exhilarating. Then again, maybe it feels more like a punch in the gut. Maybe it's equal parts excitement and terror, especially when it comes to your business. Maybe it's like what I did this past weekend, venturing into the post office today to wait for 2 hours! That was a massive risk which cost me a big chunk of my day but I mailed out 60 packages to everyone who has been a guest on my podcast!

After all, risks are all well and good...when they work out, right?

Risk can be tricky. If you don't take any chances, you'll stay stuck just where you are. But if you do take some risk, what are the REAL chances that everything will come up rosey?

Here's the bad news: there is NO such thing as a risk-free gamble. But there's good news, too. You CAN take a risk without risking everything. You can do something courageous and expansive and without signing your life away.

And regardless of whether or not a risk works out for you, there will ALWAYS be something gained by something ventured. Guaranteed.

It's just a matter of knowing how to tip the risk/benefit ratio in your favor. And being brave enough to roll the dice.

On this episode, I show you why "risk" can be your new best friend! You will learn:

    • Why risk is necessary if you want to move forward
    • What difference is between "foolish risk" and "calculated risk"
    • How to take risks with curiosity, courage, and CONFIDENCE!
    • How to improve your chances of winning when you take a gamble

054 | How Judy Edwards Made Millions in the Pooping Industry

Judy Edwards the face of a company known worldwide for helping people poop isn't exactly what most kids dream of becoming when they grow up, but that's where fate and family led Judy Edwards or "Mama Squatty," as she's called by friends, family, and colleagues. After raising seven children, Judy eventually became too pooped to poop, which led to the birth of her family's brain child — Squatty Potty.

Is the thought of experiencing a massive failure leaving you afraid to take a leap and start your dream business? Or, have you experienced a failure, and now you're too afraid to get up and try again?

This week's guest, Judy Edwards, has started several businesses along with her husband, that they ended up closing, resulting in massive failures. However, Judy never allowed failures to keep her down, in fact, she believes that without failure there can be NO success.

This is how, at the age of 61, Judy Edwards, who had been struggling with constipation, created her massively successful product, Squatty Potty, along with her son and husband. If Judy had feared the failure she might encounter, we all might still have trouble pooping.

If you're ready to start looking at failures as your stepping stones to success, then this is a MUST LISTEN episode of Success Unfiltered!

Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

P.S. Celebrate Your Rejections In Business! Why? Because the more you get told NO, the closer you are to a YES. True story. Rejection doesn't mean failure. It means that you're taking the steps that'll ensure your success! Don't let NO stop you. Let me show you how to keep going! Grab your copy of my FREE Checklist "5 Ways To Come Back From Sales Rejection" and turn that NO into a WIN!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Judy Edwards.
    • Judy shares who she is and what her product is.
    • The biggest NO that Judy experienced was the one in her head - self-doubt.
    • When Judy, her husband and her son sat down to talk about marketing the squatty potty they worried they wouldn't find the right angle because people don't like to admit they poop.
    • After Judy and her family settled on marketing it as better for elimination, they went to a women's trade show where they were not well received.
    • Judy knew her product could change people's lives so she kept going, even when people weren't willing to come up and talk to her in person at trade shows.
    • Judy and her family decided to start giving away Squatty Potty away for free to health bloggers and asked that they write a review on the Squatty Potty. That's when business started to pick up!
    • Squatty Potty began in Judy and her husband's garage and they were made out of wood. Judy knew that wasn't sustainable, so they began investigating other options.
    • Positive feedback is what helped keep Judy going, before sales really started taking off.
    • Squatty Potty is a GREAT gift to give (I would know, I've given them to friends and family). ;-)
    • Judy still deals with intimidation around the fact that her product has to do with pooping.
    • Every step of Judy's journey was filled with a little doubt, from working out of their garage, to buying a bigger warehouse, everything had a learning curve.
    • Dr. Oz's people contacted Judy via a cold call, but they had to convince her husband that they were legit. Such a good story that Judy shares in this episode!
    • Whenever doubt would creep in, other doors would open, which in turn encouraged Judy and her family to keep going.
    • Judy and her husband purchased the injection molding machine and brought it to Utah, so that they could be a part of the manufacturing process, which speed things up.
    • At 60 years old, Judy and her husband had virtually NO income because of losing money on real estate in 2008, so they had spent time praying and hoping that something would happen to help them make extra income, then the Squatty Potty was born.
    • Judy and her husband are now retired from Squatty Potty, but are still on the board of directors.
    • Judy shares that she and her husband have been married for almost 51 years.
    • Judy shares what she'd tell her younger self.
    • Judy and her husband have started and then walked away from many businesses, and lost upwards of $2M - she shares more of the story in this episode.

    • Michelle introduces Donald Kelly.
    • Donald shares a brief synopsis of who he is and what he does.
    • Donald hopped around from job to job for the first year or so out of college, but it taught him some major lessons (he shares them in this episode).
    • The first company he worked at was forced into an audit which led Donald into doing administrative work, where he was not happy.
    • With the next company that Donald was so excited to get started with, until he began working in the sales department and saw what a disaster it really was. He was only there a few months before he was fired.
    • Losing both positions so quickly was a blow to Donald's confidence.
    • Donald shares the 3 big things he learned from this experience that kept him going.
    • A three minute interview was Donald's most devastating NO. He shares the full story in this episode.
    • This 3-minute interview was a big motivator for Donald, it led him to go through his network and find an even better job opportunity.
    • "You can help somebody by not helping them." ~ Donald Kelly
    • Donald's most accomplished NO came when he was working towards a $150K deal, but learned the company he was working for had their own agenda and planned to go a different direction.
    • This is the point where Donald decided to go full steam ahead with his own company, The Sales Evangelist.
    • Donald ended up getting his first speaking gig that paid him as much as he would have gotten from the previous company in commissions on their deal.
    • Donald flipped the script and told a client NO when the client who he was coaching wasn't doing the work he had asked him to do. Since they weren't doing the work, they weren't getting any results either.
    • Now Donald filters people out by using a Typeform questionnaire to get to the clients he ideally wants to work with and help.
    • Donald shares what he would tell his younger self.

P.S. What's The Secret To Getting Your Clients Past "Sticker Shock?" It's a little-talked about distinction that helps your client focus less on your price tag and more on possibilities. But if you get a handle on the difference between COST and INVESTMENT, you'll be able to take your clients from "It's HOW much?" to "Sign me up!" with confidence and EASE! My Guide "Cost Vs. Investment: The Secret To Showing Your Value" will show you how!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

    • Michelle introduces Rachel.
    • Rachel shares a brief overview of who she is and what she offers.
    • When Rachel first started out, she wasn't charging premium prices, she shares how one of her first clients offered her $600 for the month, and she accepted.
    • "You cannot convince someone that you're worth it, if you don't believe it yourself." ~ Rachel Pedersen
    • Rachel shares how she improved her self-esteem and realized her value and worth.
    • The $600 a month client ended up being a true struggle for Rachel, which led her to fire the client, stack her wins and gain other awesome clients.
    • Rachel helped a client go from $4k a month in revenue to to $180K a month in revenue, but she still fired them. She shares the FULL story in this episode!
    • Momentum is something you should never let go of. Make sure to maintain it at all costs, and Rachel shares how she keeps her momentum going every day.
    • "If we only do the things we're supposed to do on the days that we feel like it, we'd only work probably two thirds of the time" ~ Rachel Pedersen
    • Music is a HUGE momentum builder for Rachel because she uses it to help replace her soundtrack in her own head with someone else's.
    • Rachel has folders of proposals that she received several NO's on. It has not been a straight path to success for her.
    • Early on in her career, Rachel sent a proposal for $1K a month in fees, the potential client said that was too much money, but then came back recently to ask to work with Rachel again. Rachel now charges $1K per HOUR - needless to say, the potential client still said NO.
    • Rachel would send out 30 to 50 proposals before she'd get a YES. l
    • Rachel shares three things you can do that will help you start increasing your rates and fees.
    • Rachel had to fire a client that wouldn't respect Rachel's boundaries (she lost around $12K per month in revenue by turning them down), she tells the whole story in this episode.
    • Now, Rachel takes the time to share her boundaries clearly, and if clients are unwilling to abide by them, she lets them go.
    • It's not worth building a business you resent. Rachel shares how you can create a business you actually love.
    • Every time Rachel has let a client go because they weren't a good fit, a better more qualified lead came around that WAS a good fit and hired Rachel.
    • Rachel shares what she would tell her younger self.

How to Create a Sales Follow Up System | Coffee is for Closers

Entrepreneurs, business owners, salespeople, this topic of your follow up system is for you!

I have this thing down to a science. I call it being "Professionally Annoying."

We all want to make more sales. And there's one little trick I could mention that'll help you do JUST that. It's quick, it's easy, and it's probably staring you right in the face...but if you're like most salespeople, business owners, and entrepreneurs, you're not doing it.

    I'm talking about follow-up.

Sure, it might feel awkward. You might be thinking "Why would I talk to someone again who said NO the first time?" You might be thinking that you don't have time for one more thing in your busy schedule. You might think that you've tried it once or twice on a few customers, but none of them changed their minds.

But here's the truth: 80% of sales usually require up to FIVE follow ups. Yes, that's asking for the sale FIVE times. Not once, not twice. FIVE times. When was the last time you asked someone more than twice? (If you said "I don't know" or "never", you wouldn't be alone!)

If you use it correctly, following up is one of the simplest ways to increase your sales. You can do it without feeling pushy, desperate, or salesy, too. Following up is about deepening relationships, building rapport, and trusting that the sale will happen at the right time.

On today's episode, I show you how to increase sales by simply keeping in touch!

    You will learn:

    - The top three reasons why follow-up is WELL worth your time

    - How to implement a plan that is right for you (no matter how busy you are)

    - What upping your follow-up plan will really do for your top line revenue

051 | Maneesh Sethi Survived 4 Business Deaths and the Shark Tank Squad before the "Shocking" Success!

Maneesh Sethi is the founder of Pavlok. The maker of hardware, software, and services that help people change their habits for good. The two flagship products are Pavlok and Shock Clock.

Do you have a few days every month where you worry and stress over whether your business will have enough money for the month? Whether payroll will be covered or any debt getting paid off?

This week's guest, Maneesh Sethi, went through 4 near-business-death experiences. His fourth one is what led to his breakthrough, realizing that adjusting his terms with his suppliers would make a huge difference in his finances.

By swapping to 63 day net terms with his supplier and 60 day net terms with Amazon, he got rid of the days where there wasn't enough money to pay the bills.

If you have a product based business and are continually struggling with a few days gap of cash flow problems, it's time to sit down and have that tough conversation with your manufacturers, suppliers & distributors. In this episode Maneesh and I discuss how best to do that!

If you're ready to stop stressing about your finances and ask for new terms from your manufacturers, suppliers, or distributors, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN!
