    Han Dies First – SWBTF #30 Jul 31, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week, true believers, your EU Guru Nathan P. Butler, and The Defender of the EU Mark Hurliman, take you on a wild adventure as they explore the recent news that came out of San Diego Comic Con 2012 (SDCC), and how it effects your EU.

Some things that were recently discussed at SDCC:

    • Vader’s Little Princess (like Vader and Son)
    • A Galactic Pop-Up Adventure like Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy
    • Darth Maul: Death Sentence (comic series)
    • Lost Tribe of the Sith: Spiral (comic series)
    • Agent of the Empire: Hard Targets (comic series)
    • Dawn of the Jedi: Prisoner of Bogan (comic series)
    • Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void by Tim Lebbon(new novel)
    • Mercy Kill (Hardcover -comes out this month)
    • Star Wars by Brian Wood (ongoing comic series; THE ONE TO WATCH)
    • Essential Readers Companion (Essential Guide)
    • The Old Republic: Annihilation by Karpyshyn (novel)
    • Scoundrels by Zahn (novel)
    • Last of the Jedi (standalone novel)Ever since Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66–which called for the execution of all Jedi–Jax Pavan is the last Knight around to fight the dark side of the Force. Together with his droid I-5, Jax has eluded Vader time and again, all the while wreaking havoc against the Empire through the underground resistance on Coruscant. But now the Rebel’s leader on the city-planet has been captured, and it’s up to the Last Jedi to ride again…possibly for one final adventure.”
    • Crucible (Spring 2013)

Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia have spent a lifetime fighting wars, bringing the Jedi back from extinction, raising families, and saving the galaxy more times than they can count. They’ve earned the right to rest on their laurels and let the younger generation shoulder the burden–but fate has another adventure in store for our heroes, a quest only they can tackle and hope to survive…”

Crucible leads Mark into pondering a death of one of the Big 3. He explains why readers would get more out of witnessing the deaths of the Big 3 and the reactions of the rest of the cast, compared to the idea that it should happen off page. Han dies first?

There will also be 5 – 8 issues per year from the following comic series:

    • Agent of the Empire (Hard Targets this time around)
    • Dawn of the Jedi (Prisoner of Bogan this time around)

We will get 5 issues per year of:

    • Dark Times (just finished Into the Wilderness)
    • Darth Vader (currently Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison)

There will also be TWO ongoing series:

    • Star Wars
    • Untitled

We will get 8 issues per year of a new ongoing series that has not yet been given a title. We’re betting this is the same series as above.

There are no current plans to bring back Invasion, The Old Republic, or Jedi… This causes Mark to rant a bit.

Knight Errant is ending after Escape. Blood Ties is ending after Boba Fett is Dead. Lost Tribe of the Sith is ending after Spiral.

Nathan focuses on the marketing and the term “accessible” and what that means. And Mark ponders the need to explore some of the most mined parts of the saga in the name of accessibility. Have we not had retcons, but instead Reboots this whole time? The hosts are all for new stories. And Nathan lays out the gauntlet of stories set between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back right where the new “Star Wars” series plans to start. It makes it hard to envision this series NOT causing a continuity flubbup. Mark explains how you can’t add minutes to a day, and calls a spade a spade. In a “what?!” Rant that sets both hosts into a fun little moment.

    Randy Stradley writes about Invasion-

There are lots of reasons why some series don’t go where we thought they would (disappointing sales, writer’s get stalled on where to take stories, other higher profile projects takeover the publishing slot, and so on), and I’m not going to list the reasons for our decisions for ending or continuing any given series.

I will say this: feedback from comics retailers and bookstore buyers (the people who actually order our books) indicates overwhelmingly that they want more titles that are accessible to casual fans. For instance, Dawn of the Jedi and Legacy, each being at relatively continuity-free ends of the timeline are good fits. The new Star Wars series, which is designed so that readers need know nothing more than what happened in A New Hope is another good jumping on point.

This doesn’t mean that everything we publish will fall into those kinds of categories, but it is a fact that the more accessible titles (or those which focus on important movie characters) sell better than those that require readers to be familiar with Expanded Universe continuity. We totally get that hardcore or longtime fans would like more exploration of the “between times,” but the fact is that sales of those projects don’t come up to the levels of the more accessible story lines. Every decision we make is a balancing act between art and commerce. That’s why I have said — and will continue to say — that telling a good story is far more important than connecting the dots between existing continuity landmarks. A really good story is always receive more consideration from me than one that exists primarily to fill-in the blanks.

Does it make fitting the stories more difficult to fit together when the newer materials ignore previous stories due to how obscure they are? Nathan and Mark try hard not to rant and rave, as they discuss all the various things that came from SDCC.

Wait… the EU isn’t a part of Star Wars?! The hosts ponder a great many things this week. They also focus on the marketing choices by Dark Horse and Del Rey.

There is a lot going on this week. A must listen episode if ever the dynamic duo have ever recorded one.

“What happened to the Star Wars that I used to know…?”

    Dawn of a NEW ERA! – SWBTF #29 Jul 24, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week, true believers, The Defender of the EU Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru Nathan P. Butler invite you to continue their journey back into the far flung past of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Come explore the new Dawn of the Jedi series by Dark Horse Comics and everything that comes with this new era in the #SWEU.

This time around, hosts Mark and Nathan start with the bang this series started with. This series sold out on the first two issues; #0 & #1. Multiple times!

Even better, the Digital Copies are selling good too! Wait… what’s this? Nathan’s been buying Digital Comics?! As well as all the variants covers. The guys talk about variant covers and comic addictions.

Nathan rants about the Dark Horse Comics App, and his frustrations with it.

Plus, with a New Era comes an all new symbol!

And since The Clone Wars with it’s Mortis Arc gave us an idea of what is going on inside one of those Monoliths….

….we STILL have no clue what to expect from these things!

Poor Xesh…. All these Force Hounds have letters on their faces…. And whoa…. Their names are the letters in Aurebesh! There could be a LOT of Force Hounds running around out there.

Xesh is turning into a favorite for both hosts.
Is Daegen a Palpatine-like character evil and going to try to corrupt Xesh? And if so does that make Xesh the Vader in this saga?

The Rakatan’s are turning into a truly scary species. As if they weren’t fearsome enough before, what they are willing to do to their slaves is enough to keep Nathan up at night.

Some prominent themes are seen in this new era- light, dark, and balance.

Speaking of Balance; that is one concept that got the reboot in this series. What you think you know, you have no idea.

Could Daegen Lok be the next Obi-Wan Kenobi figure?

Nathan ponders the phrase – “The Force is at war with the planet” …. Uh oh…. that can’t be good.

The hosts have discovered that an open mind helps adapt to anything.

With so much to discuss this week, we figured we’d keep the shownotes short ans sweet, so sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s Star Wars Beyond the Films!

    Dawn of the Je’daii – SWBTF #28 Jul 17, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week, true believers, your EU Guru Nathan P. Butler and The Defender of the EU Mark Hurliman, invite you to come on a journey into the far flung past of the Star Wars Expanded Universe as they explore the first arc of the new Dawn of the Jedi series by Dark Horse Comics.

Kicking things off, Mark talks about feeling like Wedge Antilles?! Well, sometimes. Both Nathan and Mark talk about why John Ostrander and Jan Duursema are two of their favorite SWEU creators.

Nathan then breaks down the chronology of the story’s setting. As we know; the printed word isn’t always correct.

Mark ponders if we will get a 0.5 issue as we did with Legacy? In fact, both hosts agree that the Zero and Zero Point Five issues set the tone of new eras very well.

In terms of historical story; are we witnessing the first force war? Mark has mentioned before how Dawn of the Jedi feels like a reboot of what we know about Star Wars, now he explains. No Jedi?! And a Clone Wars tie! (a good one) Mark’s talking circles again; and this week he explains bubbles within bubbles.

Is there something “extra-special” going on, on the planet Thyon?

At last Ashla and Bogen arrive! Not just concepts, but also physical locations.

Nathan runs down some places and people giving a deeper glimpse into the time period.

Sleeper ships! Good Sith? And the evil Rakata, and their Infinite Empire Tatooine with WATER! Yep, we’ve seen it hinted at. Now witness!

And with an early oceanic Tatooine we also get the Kumumgah, those even less talked about natives of the planet. These guys eventually become the Tusken Raiders and the Jawas! Maybe we’ll see how?

The hosts also focus on Xesh. Xesh… the Silver Surfer of the SWEU.

Mark fanboys’ out over Jan Duursema’s art.

Balance seems to be the key to the setting of Dawn of the Jedi. Each Je’daii is striving for an internal balance. And the planet Tython seems reacts to that balance as well. Xesh’s arrival sent the whole planet into huge Force Storm chaos.

See anything similar in the Je’daii Code with both the Jedi and Sith Codes?

    The Je’daii oath:

There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
There is no fear; there is power.
I am the heart of the Force.
I am the revealing fire of light.
I am the mystery of darkness
In balance with chaos and harmony,
    Immortal in the Force.

The guys talk tech, samurai like swords, and Rakatan technology.

Another unique thing about this series and it’s tech; no lightsabers… well a Forcesaber. Rakatan tech has a very unique look to it, from the Forcesaber to the Star Forge.

Mark even mentions Star Wars: Riptide’s use of Rakatan tech, and how ironic it is that the Dark Side is what inspired the lightsaber.

Mark digs the sleeper ships and the way they were worked into the story. As well as the old naval feel of most the ships seem in the Zero issue.

Nathan discovers that Spanish has some ancient Sith in it. Hola if you feel me!
And please; tell us if you’ve heard that a Bazillion times before. 😉 Ah Earthizms.

The guys run down the many various Kesh’s and how they function. Is this like Force College? How can I earn my Force Major?

Kesh, Crech, or Zesh? Turns out Xesh is pronounced Zesh.

Daegan…. What will he do, and how will it affect the story?

Where are we gonna go next? We later learned at San Diego Comic Con that there will be a Dawn of the Jedi novel soon to come! Into the Void.

Could Xesh be a redeemable character? His story will shed a lot of insight into the Rakatan’s ways. Any way you slice it, it’s going to be a wild time in a new era!

So much to discuss this week, so sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s Star Wars Beyond the Films!

    Star Wars: Mythbusters – SWBTF #27 Jul 10, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys and Fangirls! And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week, true believers, The Defender of the EU Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru Nathan P. Butler, invite you to discover the truth behind many of the Myths surrounding Star Wars and the SWEU. The guys play Mythbusters in the first of hopefully many Mythbuster styled episodes. So if there are any myths you know of, be sure to send them our way! Also, be sure to stick around at the end of the show for some bloopers!

On a bookshelf note; Mark gets The Clone Wars paperback edition he’s been longing for all these years, and Nathan gets the Expanded and Updated Visual Guide. Oh, and what’s this? An order to the clone wars?! Apparently there is!

Getting to the Nerf and Potatoes of the show, the guys have been Myth stockpiling for a while, Mara Myths, Lucas Myths, Traviss Myths, and much more! This like:

    • Did George Lucas have the Star Wars saga already written when he began work on the original films?
    • Was it always Timothy Zahn’s intention for Luke to marry Mara Jade?
    • Was Callista’s last name always Masana?
    • R. A. Salvatore “killed” Chewbacca.
    • Actress Bai Ling, who played Senator Bana Breemu in Revenge of the Sith, had her scenes cut due to an appearance in Playboy magazine.
    • Battlefront III has not come about because of LucasArts.
    • Did Timothy Zahn screwed up the dates for the Clone Wars in his novel Dark Force Rising?
    • Why did Karen Traviss REALLY stop writing Star Wars?
    • George Lucas ordered the death of Anakin Solo because of name confusion with Anakin Skywalker.
    • Time travel was introduced into Star Wars with Crosscurrent in 2010.
    • According to Lucas, the humans in Star Wars are actually the ancient ancestors of humans on Earth.

Sit back and enjoy this week’s Mythbust…erm Star Wars Beyond the Films!

Travissty in the EU – SWBTF #26 Jul 02, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys and Fangirls! And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week, true believers, your EU Guru Nathan P. Butler, and The Defender of the EU Mark Hurliman invite Mandalore the Uniter, Tom Hutchens back onto the show. They discuss the Legacy and Travissty of author Karen Traviss, and her impact upon the Expanded Universe, and the Saga as a whole.

Author of the Imperial Commando series

Love her, hate her, or just don’t care, fans tended to have strong opinions of her.

Author of Heir to the EmpireThe Hosts discuss the situation(s) and some of the perceptions made in Fandom when Karen stepped out of Star Wars for good. In the end, could it be said that she went out in the ranks of SWEU Greats like Timothy Zahn or Micheal Stackpole?

Does creating such depth create a situation for authors to get emotionally attached with their characters? Or for the readers?

Mark mentions Jacen Solo as an example of a character whose payback means more to the reader when they have followed that character for a long time.
    by Day_dreamy
Karen like Mathew Stover goes in deep with the background of their stories, and the cultures involved. Can this backfire?

In the Commando series we had a Moral Point Of View on the Jedi. Granted not everyone enjoyed her new POV. But it was one that Palpatine would exploit in years to come, so seeing it begin was refreshing.

They discuss sensational terms like Talifan, Fandalorian, and calling EU Fans Kooks.

Karen gave us some cloned Jedi in A Two-Edged Sword.

Karen also has the most K’Kruhk references in her novels than any other author. Bonus points from Mark for that. One of the most prominent under-known Jedi ever. But not everything Karen brought into the EU fit, sometimes things were overwrote, or just didn’t jive. Luke's first major love

Callista… we’re looking at you dear.

Have you read Traviss’s adaptation of The Clone Wars? It is the only way you will ever truly understand what Rex and the 501st sacrificed for the Jedi.

Nathan sets the tone and some ground facts as the deeper end of the discussion gets underway. As well as points out a lot of valid criticisms from many fans.

Had The Clone Wars forced Karen out? Did business issues drive her out of the franchise? Had an 11th hour scenario created conflicts in the clone/ Mandalorian stories that could have been prevented?

Tom wishes she would have done more than just focused on Mandalorians, perhaps broadened her horizons.

Nathan actually retconed something of Karen’s for The Essential Atlas.

Nathan explored Niche Writer vs Broad Writer styles which spins into a semi-rant about Mary-sue characters.

Tom points out that she was brought on to tell a tale for a certain point of view; the clones. More specifically the Republic Commandos.

Ponders prevail, as the hosts explore how things looked, how they were, and what they could have been, this episode is so controversial we couldn’t tell you all about it here!

You’ll have to listen to the episode to understand.

    Mandalorians… ‘Nuff Said – SWBTF #25 Jun 26, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings! And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week your hosts, the Defender of the EU, Mark and the EU Guru, Nathan tackle a topic many EU Fans have been salivating for. Mandalorians.

And who better to help them discuss the Mandalorian culture, than Tom Hutchens; a.k.a. Mandalore the Uniter, founder of the Mandalorian Mercs. Tom brings a unique look into the Mandalorian culture through his love of metal work, making custom armor.

Also, Nathan and Tom were recently at the ConCarolinas Star Wars Panel where Nathan recorded the panel for listeners to enjoy.

Nathan sets the current stage of the Mandalorians in the Saga to catch us up.

The hosts ponder the question: Does the current state of the Mandalorians fit well to you?

The hosts all agree that Jason Fry’s Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare stitches everything back together into a cohesive unit well. As Mark’s fond of saying; “if there’s a retcon: there’s a way.” Mark thinks that retcons can fix stang near everything!

Tom mentions armor, and how it fits into the culture of the Mandalorians. And Mark noticed certain elements of Jango Fett’s armor mirrored in the architecture of Mandalorian buildings in The Clone Wars. Tom has a very good explanation for this, based in the beskar’gam (armor) itself. Very deep stuff.

Speaking of The Clone Wars the hosts discuss the Death Watch, and other new characters recently introduced. Most notably Bo-Katan. Bo-Katan‘s introduction to The Clone Wars gave fans voice actress Katee Sackhoff, who plays a strong female warrior who is the equal of any man in the Death Watch.

Was Karen Traviss’s take on the Mandalorians your meat & potatoes? Or did you feel you were left with burnt toast? There was a time when she was considered by some to be “The Authority” of the Mandalorian Culture, as well as Clones, especially Clone Commandos. But then some didn’t care for what she brought to the table at all. Few fell into the “Meh” group.

Is the Mandalorian’s ever fluctuating past due in large part to George Lucas’s morphing vision? Or author carelessness? Or was it simple over-site? However it was, Jason Fry’s Essential Guide to Warfare sews it back together brilliantly.

Nathan points out that the groundwork for the retcon for The Clone Wars‘ New Mandalorians was in place well before the episodes even aired, inside the pages of Star Wars: The Essential Atlas. Many missed this at first though, perhaps owing to the higher price for the Essential Guide series prices?

Tom brings up an excellent question: what is the real face of Mandalore?

Poor Mandalore… it was forest and woodlands a few times, and then it gets one picture of a barren wasteland and suddenly the whole planet is totaled? Not so fast!

The whole planet’s surface does not need to be destroyed. Perhaps it was only a few locations that had been bombed out of existence. Perhaps it is the New Mandalorian Culture that felt the location was sacred or symbolic. Mandalorians- as known before we see them in TCW -were a nomadic people, they could uplift camp and leave in a moments notice. So perhaps they didn’t care that the New Mandalorians set up in these old bombed out capital locations. There are multiple ways the wastelands seen on the TV show could have happened. The hosts ponder a few.

Mark asks: Did The Clone Wars turn the Klingons of Star Wars into Vulcans?

Or in the end did it just blend the two?

In the EU, Knights of the Old Republic (the comic) plays up the fact that the Mando’s were equal opportunity employers, a come-one, come-all attitude. It didn’t matter what species, so long as you honored the Resol’nare. Whereas the New Mandalorians seem like they are more like the empire, everyone same skin tone, hair colors, and eye color, and all human. Is there a story to be told as to why?

Kotor: War was brought up due to one of Mark’s biggest EU wishes: Mandalorian Knights! Granted this isn’t Knights of the Old Republics first foray into the land of Mandalorian Knights, Demagol tried to create an army of them with Jedi Master Arca Jeth’s DNA. But it would seem that after Demagol’s failure it was decided it would be better to have adult Jedi vs. raising them from infancy.

Yet these new Mandalorian Knights as seen in Kotor: War are the best of both. They are Jedi who have sided with the Mandalorian people. As Jedi they are still honoring life, just not the lives the Republic Jedi want them focusing on.
On the cosplay side of things Tom explains how being a Mandalorian Knight would work in the Mandalorian Mercs. Who knew there were so many well thought out rules to wearing a Star Wars costume?
Leaping into the far future, Mark points to Hondo Karr, the secretly-Mandalorian, Stormtrooper who was a member of Joker Squadron, who would again shift sides and join the Galactic Alliance and of all squadrons, Rogue Squadron. But the Legacy series still has a Mandalorian tale to tell… Hondo was last seen donning his beskar’gam once again and setting out to hunt down the new Mandalore to seek revenge.

The hosts stop and ponder the polar opposite of the Mandalorian Knights; Mandalorian Sith!?!

Nathan explains why this concept just might not work.
Returning to the Klingonization of the Mandalorians, we have Mando’a, the Mandalorian language. Nathan asks if creating a full language going just a little too far?

The hosts ponder a lot this episode, and cover a lot of ground. Enjoy the episode, and don’t forget; if you want to chime in on anything be sure to hit up the guys through email, or their facebook page.

    1313 Nomo Fett – SWBTF #24 Jun 20, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode your hosts Nathan and Mark discuss the latest in Star Wars, particularly the news about 1313.

What do we know? And what did we think we know?

Pop Block: Is the snapping neck the Mature theme coming into play? And is that something we’ve been gearing towards with SW Games since Episode 3?
CT 1313: Boba used this id during the Boba Fett Junior novels.
Mark and Nathan look at other games that could be similar to 1313, starting with Bounty Hunter.
Is Fett the Superman of the SWEU?
Nathan calls Fett a Jedi… Mark ponders if regular individuals are more attuned to the Unifyin Force.

EUCantina recently covered the 1313 preveiw courtesy Brien Bell, and this week’s episode the guys use Gametrailer videos to geek out.
Interior ship combat game-play is amazing, the detail, the game-play, the adventure! Nathan explains “in engine” and what that means, and how it applies to 1313. Will it be PC? Nathan explains how we shouldn’t bet on it only being PC. Can the current gen consoles handle this game? Or is it being built for the next gen console’s sequels? This all leads Nathan to run down the processing power of the next gen consoles and how that applies to our gaming excitement, as well as what “porting over” means. Nathan shares his inner gamer, while Mark outs himself as a gamer who fell off the couch.

Combat walkthrough with commentary: Looks like the ship the guys are on gets breached and the droids are stealing cargo.
Dark and gritty: what will that mean for the game?

Both hosts are really excited about the story set in the game Star Wars: 1313, the depths of Coruscant explored.
Is Force free or Force full the way to go in Star Wars games?

Ship crash game-play: Woah, no way should regular beings (aka non Force sensitives) be doing that! The Force is obviously with them. Again the graphics and the depth of the scenery jump right out.
Is 3rd person good or bad in this setting? Should they have the option of 1st? Imagine this game in 3D!!! Nathan’s already drooling, and sees a lot of parallels with the game Uncharted. Mark asks the listeners a gaming question. Oooh, interactive PODCASTING!!

Navigation cinematic: The depth in the footage is just insane. This is Sparta! I mean Coruscant.
Anyone know when this game is set? This sets Mark off onto a rant. Star Wars 1313 could play a lot like Republic Commando.

Your hosts also discussed an E3 debut interview, and the game’s Mature rating. Is this due to the hands on way of dealing with the enemy? Some games are rated T with as much violence as we have seen thus far. No naked Twi’leks please. This may be the closest to a Call of Duty or other military style game in the franchise so far, a Battlefront of the new era, perhaps?
    Mark confesses his secret evil….
All this and more on this week’s episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films!

Gender in the Saga – SWBTF #23 Jun 14, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week hosts Mark and Nathan are joined by special guests Kelly of Big Shiny Robot and Nanci of Tosche Station Radio!
The ladies provide a female point of veiw this week as we focus on gender and sexism in the films and in the EU.
They look at the thin line of portrayal of strong and sexy characters.
Personality goes a long way. Sometimes it’s not about the gender, it’s the character’s personality, these characters don’t need to be made “sexy” they just need to allowed more page time.
Is the “catsuit” of Mara Jade’s just a publishing agenda?

    Is the Dark Side sexier?
    Cue Mother Talzin: “Yes… yes I am…”

One lesson Nathan learned in Star Wars is that the Empire is bad, anti-alien, and very sexist. And yet we have examples of women within the regime. In universe it seems equality is used well.
Mon Mothma was a chief of state. Even Leia, and no one batted an eye. Daala had a chance to show her stuff in the recent Fate of the Jedi series.

In Fate of the Jedi we were shown a very brutal father daughter scene, was it Sithly enough to work? Or was it too far? The hosts look into this hot topic.

Has the EU been gearing readers to the Dark Times of the Empire? As in it gets harder to shock the readers who are as up to date as possible? Humor runs rampant during this week’s episode. As does the name-calling!
One of the things that bothers Nathan is the occasional gratuitous, over-sexed scenes that we get with the strong characters, hailing back to the films with Leia and her slave outfit.
This gets the hosts pondering if it was purposeful?
Was it a “We can sell posters” mentality?
A basic rule: Give Jaina a lightsaber and let her be AWESOME!

Girls love Star Wars too! Merchandising needs to reflect this! It’s time for the Dathomir Nightsister battlepack! Her Universe appeals to not only girls, but fellas too, yet has created a hub for fangirls to gear up.

Kelly explains what any guy dating a fangirl needs to buy her. Yes it’s a 4 letter word: YODA!

Has sexualization been a taboo topic for Fandom? Is it a “Hot potato” topic? Does Fandom need to be ready for certain themes to be explored? Fandom can occasionally suffer from the “powder keg” effect. Twitter recently exploded over EUCantina’s gender themed articles. Sometimes the powder-keg effect gets fans so riled they miss the point of articles. Such is human nature. And everyone has an opinion. They hosts then turn to the different novels/comics that focus on leading ladies.
The ladies both agreed that The Courtship of Princess Leia had the potential to be a Leia-centric novel, but due to poor characterization it failed to capitalize on the potential.

In the end you can’t please 100% of the people, 100% of the time.

ConCarolinas Star Wars Panel 2012 Jun 12, 2012
    Show notes

Nathan once again attended ConCarolinas this year, and, as is tradition, he recorded the year’s Star Wars panel for listeners who were unable to attend. On the panel for this year’s discussion are professional costumer Cheralyn Lambeth (also a member of the 501st and Rebel Legion), Kathy Johnson (501st member, wife of 501st founder Albin Johnson, and mother of Katie Johnson, whose story is recounted on the panel), Tom Hutchens (founder of the Mandalorian Mercs costuming group), and Nathan (whom listeners know by now). We hope you enjoy this on-site recording and brief recounting of the convention.
