Once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much X-Wing goodness in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it ago; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. One Sith, Two Sith, Red Sith, Lost Sith (3 of 3) – SWBTF #34 Aug 30, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week true believers, your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, and The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, continue on with their look back at John Jackson Miller’s Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories. This week they wrap up their three part coverage of the newest premium trade paperback by Del Rey by covering Pandemonium.

We have a winner for our Celebration 6 contest! Marissa (insert last name) Congradulations! The hosts also explain their plan for the next few episodes.

Nathan breaks down where we are in the story, as well as publishing sides of things. Which leads to gripes- and points of view when it comes to gripes- what’s yours?

Size? Price? Characters? Era placement? Something else?

This leads the hosts to discussing e-books and paperbacks as well as collecting and branching out. As well as how this might factor into the publishing side of things.

Do you fear a bait and switch? If you fear that’s the case with the Lost Tribe: The Collected Stories, well the hosts explain why you shouldn’t worry.
Digital concerns lead to reverse comparability and how that might effect you the SWEU reader. Mark still wants to see Del Rey publish a book in Hardcover,

Paperback, Audiobook/ ebook, and all that at once to see just which format readers most prefer.

Jumping into the story- Mark explains his fascination with SWEU Maps, and how he’d have liked one world map just to make understanding content placement better.

The hosts also discuss John Jackson Miller, as well as some of his Mass Effect work, which leads them to again pondering about the new Dark Horse Comics Lost Tribe of the Sith: Spiral comic series.

Nathan hopes Spiral won’t suffer the Babylon 5-fifth season scenario. (if you have no idea what this means; go watch Babylon 5 you’ll quickly understand when you reach season 5.)

Both hosts were taken back by Quarra’s secret mission is an affair. Could this be the SWEU’s first adultery?

The hosts discuss how John Jackson Miller has a habit of giving readers STRONG Female characters. And he seems to do it well! Keep it up Sir!

This leads to a discussion of Kerra Holt, as well as other prominent characters and moments brought to readers by Mr. Miller. As well as playing with assumptions. The man is king.

Mark discusses scenes that could hold their own. Where action occurs off page but so epic in action it could hold its own as a short story. Unlike some other short stories that were so obscure readers hardly even care.

While some may have felt the series was a collection of “too short” stories, the hosts both felt it worked as a collection, the pacing kept the story moving, if anything it could have even added more stories to the mix; or even a second volume later down the line. Mark explored the ending, how it left him both satisfied, and yet conflicted, wanting more. But how that is NOT a bad thing!

The hosts end with discussing the accessibility of this story compared to the larger EU. Mark dares Del Rey to multi-format release to see if Hardcovers are the real numbers or not. Nathan explains how that might not work.

Another must listen episode with your dynamic duo, way too much to cover in one set of shownotes. So once again, enjoy and may the Force be with you!

    Getting Tribal (2 of 3) – SWBTF #33 Aug 23, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week true believers, The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, continue on their merry adventure unlike any other. You’re invited as they discuss the next four (e)books of John Jackson Miller’s Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories in part two of their three part coverage of the newest premium trade paperback by Del Rey.

Mark and Nathan discuss maps, as well as the choice to keep the second map tucked away mid book. Mark gushes about the Tolkien-feel to having the maps in his SWEU books. As well as if he could ask Mr Miller some questions about envisioning Kesh.

Nathan touches on the cover images of the ebooks. Mark mentions the older books would do that with their series. Nathan sets the dates as well as touches on other SWEU works in play at that time. You know… the basics.

A tie to Star Wars: Vector? Wait…

Covenant, Lucien Draay. the fate fo the Galaxy…. you know… again those basics. Nathan also explains how Sentinel has a jump that falls under a new year, and why.

    How many stories are their? 4? 3? 5? Well… couldn’t that be a point of view thing…

Who found the next four books more boring? Who enjoyed the ride more? You’ll want to tune in!

Yaru Korsin…. the Darth Bane of his time.

Nathan makes some Game of Thrones comparisons while exploring timing of the book. The hosts cover the “need” to connect things, and how John Jackson Miller handles it well.

    Mark’s internet connection gets attacked!

Sides, whose side do you side with? If you had to pick sides…. Nathan discusses the concept.

And don’t forget to check out Lost Tribe of the Sith: Spiral when you finish up reading The Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories! The hosts discuss some of the first issue and how it could play out in conjunction with the collected stories.

Hilts- what do you think: more like Luke? Or Indiana Jones?

Does Hilt’s changes to the Tribe’s way of doing things eventually get undone off the page? Nathan points out that there are 3,000 years to play with.

Another week with too much to discuss in one episode! Be sure to stay tuned as next week the guys cover Pandemonium!

You also have until the start of Celebration VI (8/23/12) to like our Facebook page for a chance to win Mark’s (once-read) hardcover of Star Wars: Fatal Alliance. On the first day of Celebration VI, one of our “Facebook friends” will be chosen at random to win!

Another must listen episode with your dynamic duo, way too much to cover in one set of shownotes. So once again, the guys will be spreading this great book over another episode! Enjoy and may the Force be with you!

    Getting Lost in the EU (1 of 3) – SWBTF #32 Aug 15, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week true believers, your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, and The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, take you on an adventure unlike any other, as they discuss John Jackson Miller’s Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories.

Wait… what’s this? The hosts are moving?!

The stage is set, the hosts explore the characters and themes of the first four ebooks.

Premium Trade- will it fit on the bookshelf? Is it worth it’s price? The hosts explain why they feel it is.

The collection takes a historical reader feeling. As well as a technology curve.

Mark gets a little tongue tied over Kesh. It’s not Kresh Mark…

Mark focuses on the map at the beginning of the book, and how Del Rey should bring maps back to every SWEU novel. He also found the book for $7.14

The hosts talk brotherly love Korsin style.

The Korsin arc has a very Hamlet feel to it, with Seelah being one evil Sith bad-girl…

Sith just can’t get over themselves. A reoccurring theme in the Sith. John Jackson Miller explores the Sith dynamic in a way that is refreshing to read, and it works even better as a collected stories. It has a trilogy feel overall. The first four stories, then the next four, and wraps up with Pandemonium which is sixteen chapters as well.

Nathan points out that Seelah isn’t the only plotting lady in the story, Adari herself has a few hidden plots herself.

Did Luke take a tip from the Sith in Return of the Jedi? Use your magic!

Also check out Lost Tribe of the Sith: Spiral

You also have until Celebration VI to like our Facebook page for a chance to win Mark’s (once-read) hardcover of Star Wars: Fatal Alliance. On the first day of Celebration VI, one of our “Facebook friends” will be chosen at random to win!

Another must listen episode with your dynamic duo, way too much to cover in one set of shownotes, nay show itself. So the guys will be spreading this great book over three whole episodes! Enjoy and may the Force be with you!

    Crosscurrent & Riptide – SWBTF #31 Aug 08, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings Fanboys, Fangirls, EU Fans, and returning Beyonders!
And welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week, true believers, The Defender of the EU Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru Nathan P. Butler, take you on an adventure unlike any other, as they explore Paul S. Kemp’s Jaden Korr novels; Crosscurent, and Riptide. Spoilers ahead.

One Sith- the hosts both agree they want more! Which quickly leads them to ponder were these two books meant to be a duology? They sure work like one. And work well together.

Clones- such a staple of Star Wars and yet there is still so much about the process that isn’t set in stone. Story potential could be lurking on the horizon.

The guys discuss Force Lightning, and the Jedi’s use of it. Intentions and all that.

Speaking of Force Lightning- was this one of the many doors that lead to the Great Schism between the films and the EU? Which leads to the ponder of torturing a person by keeping them alive…. All these dark activities.

While talking dark Mark discusses how the end of Crosscurent started to take on a Deathtroopers flavor. Which leads him to gushing about Jedi of Old meeting up with Luke’s Order Jedi- which brings him back to dreams of K’kruhk showing up in a book someday.

Did anyone else catch the Faal/ Fel connection? Was there one?

Should there ever be a Jedi Punisher? Or would that by default cause said Jedi to no longer be a Jedi?

The hosts discuss the character dynamics of the relationships of the main characters, but forget to touch on the running joke of Caf & Chew Stims!

    Marr: Jedi Rainman

Moving into Riptide, they discuss the clones more, Mara, Lessin, Lumiya, and Solusar clones and followed by clones of Kyle Katarn, and Jaden Korr, so much still left open for more story potential.

Nyss… if ever a creepy character that flies in the face of what we thought we knew.

Is Jaden the modern version of Jacen’s vision in the New Jedi Order? Does fate have more to tell?

The use of Rakatan technology was interesting. It’s use was just plain mind boggling….

Could Jaden be the star of a larger series? What do the One Sith have planned? What are the ramifications of the end of Riptide?

Mark relates the identity crisis of the cloning to Spider-man’s Clone Saga with Peter Parker and his clone Ben Reilly as they each thought the other was the original and later the clone. Which leads the hosts to explore identity crisis with clones in the Star Wars Saga. Nathan compares it to The Force Unleashed’s story with Galen Starkiller. A lot of deep thoughts!

Another must listen episode with your dynamic duo. Enjoy and may the Force be with you!
