Knight Errant: The Kerra Holt Story – SWBTF #46 Nov 15, 2012
    Show notes

Knight Errant, John Jackson Miller, Kerra Holt, Sith Space, and how many artists it took to bring it all to life, all on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films. YOUR Star Wars discussion podcast! YOUR ticket to the EU!

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, and The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, sit down to discuss the harrowing trip into the heart of darkness that becomes Kerra Holt’s tale. So strap in and tighten your crash webbing, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

The hosts layout the stories that build the Knight Errant story. Nathan ponders if Knight Errant could be considered one of the darkest, and most depressing stories of the entire Expanded Universe.

    • Influx (Online short story)
    • Aflame (1st Comic Arc)
    • Knight Errant (Novel)
    • Deluge (2nd Comic Arc)
    • Escape (3rd Comic Arc)
    • Essential Atlas Extra: The Knight Errant Gazetteer(Online Supplement)

They continue to discuss the art styles used, and how the characters were drawn from issue to issue. Mark likes the fact that the Sith’s history is starting to be explored more and more in the EU. The setting allows for a darker story than most story arcs. When the series reached Deluge, drug addiction played into the story, adding an element that hadn’t been seen since Legacy, and Cade Skywalker’s Death Stick addiction. Another Dark Side story brought to you by Dark Horse.

They also discuss John Jackson Miller’s style, and how he threads plots throughout certain series. In fact both felt that Miller still has more story to tell. Perhaps it is too soon to call Knight Errant finished? Your hosts both think so.

In terms of artists, Nathan points out how many different artists were involved with this series, as well as the varying styles from each artist. This isn’t always a good thing; as you will find out.

Nathan also points out that there WAS a model used for Kerra’s likeness back at Celebration V, unlike other works like Dark Empire which seemed to use likenesses such as Bruce Willis. This SHOULD have made Kerra’s look in the comic more concrete, and yet…. it did not.

How well does the Knight Errant novel tie into the comic series and vice-verse? Which arc was best? Which served the overall plot better; the comics, or the book?

They also looked at the covers of the comic series and chose their best and worst of.

    When You Wish Upon A Death Star… Killing The Big 3 – SWBTF #45 Nov 06, 2012
    Show notes

Lucas Sells Out, Disney buys Lucasfilm, the Sequel Trilogy is a go with Episode VII coming in 2015, all on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films. YOUR Star Wars discussion podcast! YOUR ticket to the EU!

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, sit down to discuss the news that just might break the Expanded Universe. Strap in and tighten your crash webbing, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

The news that rocked the Fandom. Your hosts explore some of the possible ramifications of this major news. And how it might impact your Expanded Universe. They ponder if the EU could continue to exist on its own as an alternate universe when Episode 7 comes out in 2015. While Nathan wants clarity, Mark wants the deaths of the big 3, if his EU is to go out, it might as well go out with a big bang!

They also discussed the possibilities of what could happen to Del Rey and Dark Horse as well as Cartoon Network with this announcement. But enough doom and gloom, on the brighter side of things: How about a Star Wars THEME PARK!

Oh all the Star Wars products that just might be. Leia as a Disney Princess? Does that make Han a Rogue Charming?Once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Fan Reaction action in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. Zombies in the EU – SWBTF #44 Oct 31, 2012
    Show notes

Zombies, Reanimated Dead, Sith Alchemy, and Magic, all on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films. YOUR Star Wars discussion podcast! YOUR ticket to the EU!

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, and The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, sit down to discuss Zombies in the Expanded Universe, as well as the novels Red Harvest, and Death Troopers. Strap in and tighten your crash webbing, Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip into the galaxy far, far away!

Starting things off the guys lay out where their Geekdom lies in the Zombie genre. Both hosts have read a majority of the Walking Dead comics and are huge fans of The Walking Dead tv show. Mark has also read a couple zombie novels like The Rising, and World War Z.

They discuss the premise of Death Troopers, the tapping of Joe Schreiber to pen the first adult aimed SW horror novel.

They discuss the Han and Chewie factor in Death Troopers, and whether it was a mistake, or part of the strategy.

Mark also discovers some interesting things regarding Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided and the Star Wars Galaxies: Witches of Dathomir. The Blackwing Crystal…

They ask: “Do we need an answer to why there are zombies? Does it need to be significant
Are Zombies in the SWEU a gimmick?”

Mark and Nathan both felt Red Harvest worked very well. Much better, even that Death Troopers. The setting worked, the story worked, the concept worked.

They also discussed concepts like, Force vs Magic.

Mark would love a third Zombie story by Schreiber, one that bridges the gap between Red Harvest and Death Troopers. As well as discussing free excerpts, and how Red Harvest had a lot of them given before the books release.

Nathan ponders Star Wars Zombie down loadable content for the games. Yes please!

Once again, your dynamic duo cover entirely too much Zombie action in their ONE hour, but don’t worry, give it a go; you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you might even get a little education on the EU while you’re at it. But no matter how you slice it and dice it, you’ll be having another adventure Beyond the Films. So sit back, hang on, enjoy the show, and may the Force be with you!

    X-Wing Omnibus Vol 3 – SWBTF #43 Oct 25, 2012
    Show notes

Michael A. Stackpole, Thrawn, Barron Fel, and more, Star Wars: Omnibus: X-Wing Rogue Squadron, Volume 3, on the next Star Wars Beyond the Films. YOUR Star Wars discussion podcast! YOUR ticket to the EU!

This week true believers, Beyonders, Fanboys, Fangirls, respected aliens around the galaxy, The Defender of the EU; Mark Hurliman, and your EU Guru; Nathan P. Butler, sit down to discuss the third and final volume of the three volume Star Wars Omnibus: X-Wing Rogue Squadron series. Strap in and tighten your crash webbing, Mark’s piloting and likes to turn the internal compensator down to zero! Star Wars Beyond the Films is setting off on another rapid-fire trip to a galaxy far, far away!

Jumping right in with a few announcments, we have a winner of the Star Wars 2012 Del Rey Convention Exclusive Sampler Contest! Congratulations to lucky winner: Drew Nick.

Nathan’s new Webisode series, From the Star Wars Library has launched.
Mark’s new column on The Star Wars Report: Expanding Story Opportunities.

This episode covers the issues collected in the the Star Wars: Omnibus- X-Wing Rogue Squadron Vol. 3: (Be sure to check out the links for some epic cover art)

    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 21: In the Empire’s Service, Part 1
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 22: In the Empire’s Service, Part 2
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 23: In the Empire’s Service, Part 3
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 24: In the Empire’s Service, Part 4
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 25: The Making of Baron Fel
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 26: Family Ties, Part 1
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 27: Family Ties, Part 2
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 28: Masquerade, Part 1
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 29: Masquerade, Part 2
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 30: Masquerade, Part 3
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 31: Masquerade, Part 4
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 32: Mandatory Retirement, Part 1
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 33: Mandatory Retirement, Part 2
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 34: Mandatory Retirement, Part 3
    • X-wing Rogue Squadron 35: Mandatory Retirement, Part 4

It’s no secret that this is the volume of the Omnibus series both host most enjoyed. The rise of Ysanne Isard, Barron Fel’s defection, Sate Pestage’s fall from grace, and an X-Wing comic not collected?! (Relax- it’s just not in THESE Omnibi)

Art and story blow away the tone set in the first two omnibi. There is more dialog in this one issue than any other, allowing for more character development this time around. The guys also discuss payoff, and whether you need to have that payoff to have a satisfactory story? Thinking along the lines of Star Wars: Invasion’s recent “satisfactory ending” the hosts wonder if Fel’s plot will ever be picked back up. They hope so, or at least some editor at Del Rey has it on their wishlist.

With so much going on in the show, it’s difficult, nay impossible, to capture it all in the shownotes. You’ll just have to listen for yourself. You be the judge.

First question out of the gate: where does the first volume of the X-Wing Omnibus lie in the timeline? Nathan has singles whereas Mark has the Omnibus collection. Apparently there are some minor differences along the way. They talk about the different art styles used in the various stories. They discuss a movie character’s death in Rogue Leader. Apparently Sullustan are the Red Shirts of the SWEU.
Mark points out that we see a different side to Tycho in Rogue Leader. Nathan and Mark both felt the second story in the Omnibus felt so off in style it was practically off-putting. Nathan mentions Derek Hobbie Klivian, which leads to a correction in printing. As well as some crazy in atmosphere flight tactics. They talk story arcs, character progression, fighter combat, and much, much more.
