Parenting in the Saga – SWBTF #22 May 31, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

Kelly Adams joins Nathan and Mark this week as they focus on parenting in the saga far far away.
How did some of our more prominent character handle raising their brood?
Nathan ponders back in the day with black and white TV, Nick at Nite and how Star Wars fits into the equation.
Did many of the kids raised by the characters focused in this episode grow up “normally”?
The hosts start with the Skywalkers and look deeper at the relationships there in.

Kelly brings up Padme’s WILL TO LIVE, and how it is ESSENTIAL to parenting. No will to live. No parent. Not very in-character of Padme.

Shmi the virgin Mary of our beloved saga was explored as well. The single mother struggling to provide for a very special boy.
The hosts have a lot of fun this week, exploring as well as poking fun of some situations the saga has provided.
Imagine a galaxy where Shmi struggled with Anakin’s being born with no father….

Maybe using the saga as examples of good parenting isn’t such a good idea……
Moving a long the hosts break down the Skywalker line by generation.
The Solos it would appear average 1 out of 3… No wonder Han said never quote him the odds.
In fact the Solos could be some of the worst examples of parenting in the EU. Or a good example of what not to do.
But is this the fault of the books? A lot of the kids early lives were offscreen. Perhaps this is something a crafty author could go back and correct?
Duty over honor- is this the descision that hurt the Solo kids? That the parents were too focused on the government and the galaxy and less on parenting?
Should the Solos have taken more time off? They certainly seem to be better grandparents than they were parents to their own three kids.

Mark STILL wants more fleshing out of the gaps in the timeline. More Solo kid adventures and so forth.

At least we’re seeing character growth in the next gen characters in the last few 9 book series (Legacy of the Force, and Fate of the Jedi).
The hosts even focus on some of the EU exclusive characters as well, and how their style of child rearing worked out.
Who was the best? And who was the worst?
One thing seems certain- kids in the EU will work in the profession of their parents more often than not.
Kelly mentions Chewie’s family as represented by the Holiday Special.
Like the balance to the Force the hosts discuss the balancing of Shmi Skywalker and the anti-Shmi, Jango Fett.

Also, quick show of hands, who wants us to cover the Mandalorian culture sometime in an episode?
Lastly they touch on adopted and foster parents.
The moral of this week’s episode: Don’t use Star Wars as an example of parenting!

    Fate of the EU… Uh, Jedi – SWBTF #21 May 24, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

EDITORS NOTE: Ahead there be spoilers…. consider this your warning!
This week Mark and Nathan are joined by Intrepid Bothan Reporter and Lightsaber Rattling Jedi, Peter Morrison, to discuss the Fate of the Jedi series as a whole.

Mark ponders the excerpt at the start and end of the series and it’s possible ramifications.

The guys hit the plot in a nut shell to set the tone of the episode and then break down the series from there.
The series has an odyssey feel to it, while also telling a multitude of stories all enterweaved to make up a bigger overall story.
Jacen’s past was explored. Or was it? Was Abeloth TOO POWERFUL? Did Luke need an enemy more powerful than even him?

Nathan takes a moment to show his brotherly side. Did FotJ suffer an identity crisis?
Mortis makes its way into the series and the guys ponder how much Lucas knew of the plot. How much of this was made up on the spot? Nathan brings up the recent Insider interviews with the FOTJ authors.
He also ponders if the publishing group has changed the game plan and shifted to a looser planning style?
Did this allow for a more interchangable author feel to the series? Did that play into the success of Christie Golden stepping into Karen Traviss’s slot? Had Abeloth been Lucas approved would she have been the”Mother” in all respects? Instead of some being trying to be like them? Did Jacen’s story get resolved?
Peter proposes that the series might have done better had Abeloth been left out and the Lost Tribe been the main villian. Perhaps give her a stand alone book?
Mark ponders (or possibly rants) that Abeloth had to have hedged her bets and had a spare possessed body out there hidden away.
The guys focus on the pacing of the series. It almost made each book read like a stand alone. Was this a mistake? Should longer series be set to release closer together vs being spread out?
The Krayt factor: Was it or was it not Darth Krayt at the end of the story who came to Luke’s aide? Seems Denning doesn’t even know and he wrote the scene….
SPOILER WARNING: So in the end they stop Abeloth (for now) but in doing so have put back on the throne the dark man whom Jacen stopped which kicked everything off in the first place. Kind of crazy huh? But didn’t Jacen’s destroying Centerpoint Station cause her to get free? Wait, but wasn’t that ordered by Luke?
So did this give us closure? Or an open plot thread awaiting a crafty author later?
What? Nathan gets political with his satire? But it was necessary to understand the plot of FOTJ.
FotJ makes Dark Nest more meaningful to the SWEU.

Celestial, the Ones, and so much left open…. was this a good thing?? Bad thing? Or a GREAT Thing?
Random Mark ponder: Will Shelter be used to keep Beyond Shadows and the Mind Walker plots going?
They discuss Beyond Shadows, the Font of Power as well as the Lake of Apparitions, as well as Sith Spirits, Force Ghosts, Force Apparitions, Force Entities, and so forth.
This leads to pondering the “next generation” of Jedi. And how the Big 3’s story has overshadowed the newer Jedi’s individual stories.
Should the Jedi have destroyed the Font of Power? Is this something that should have been taken out? A weapon of Jedi Destruction….
Nathan touches on Ben and Vestara’s love plot. But not in a Tahiri touching kind of way…. …which leads to Vestara’s character growth throughout the series, dispite her Sithly Father’s pressures during the series.
Will this make Ves drop out of the saga? Or will the One Sith make an appearance BEFORE Legacy? (Even though it would happen after Legacy was published.)
Jaina Solo’s character grew a lot by the series end. Even Tahiri had her character go through a lot of changes. Especially in light of past series directions with her character. We almost had our Imperial Knights!

The personal relationships were well executed. All the hosts agree that was a very strong point for the series.
Anakin Skywalker CAUSED the imbalance?! Wait… say again? So does that mean Luke and Ben are the Chosen Ones per Lucas before Mortis? This leads the hosts to discuss Balance and what that means for a bit.

Nathan had a very interesting outlook on it. Or at least gives EU Fans OPTIONS. Or was this addition to the FotJ plot a huge mistake? Or one to come?

Mark takes a minute to have a fan crush moment about the Horn family

Were the Barabels the ‘sleeper agents’ of the whole series?
Allana’s back in the open. They developed her up to own her own portion of the next generation of characters. She and Ben could have been 3rd generation, but ended up growing into the 2nd.
Does judging children characters age vary from person to person?
The hosts also judge the series, and give it a 1-10 ranking and a one word description.
And sit back after the credits for a Marvel treat… erm.. we mean bloopers!

    Apocalypse 2012…. – SWBTF #20 May 16, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week the guys explore the final chapter of the Fate of the Jedi series.
Was adding Mortis into the plot a good or bad thing?
How does one stop the multiple man? (Abeloth)
Did the series get the closure it needed with Apocalypse?
Quick show of hands: who freaked out when Mortis was mentioned?

And to commemorate Nathan’s 10th anniversary in Star Wars podcasting, a contest is running on the Facebook page and Twitter feed for the show to win a signed copy of Nathan’s novel Greater Good! See nathanpbutler.com for details.

Nathan finally likes Killiks? Uh oh, it IS a sign of the Apocalypse! The Killiks were used in a great way. Not only did it work for the story, and series, it also makes Dark Nest more vital to the over all plot.
Some plots were purposly left open, and this can be both a good and bad thing.
Was Denning messing with Traviss with the direction he took Fett in the series?

The Barabels…. are they the Trojan Horse of the Jedi temple?

Was the length and pacing the cause of most readers negative perceptions of the plot? Did some elements take too long while others were too fast? Should the series have been longer or shorter?
Will Mortis turn into another Even Piel? Was the addition of Mortis George Lucas approved?
Should the author line up been shifted?
Did Denning know if Krayt was the Dark Man? Or is he just messing with the fans by saying they didn’t know?
Does the Imperial plot pay off? Or is it left too wide open for future stories?
    Han dies!?!!! Let Mark explain….
Wynn Drovan is he like the Riddler of the Star Wars universe? Nathan talks about that. And, in the end was it really the “Apocalypse”?

The Ten Knights: Mark’s really looking forward to their story!
Was the end of the book talking about Jaina? Or Abeloth?
Will we ever get stories that take place in the gaps created in the last few series? After all, there are enough gaps to fit a few mini series into the holes.
Be sure to continue discussing the book Apocalypse on our facebook page!

Motion Control: Part Deux – SWBTF #19 May 09, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode your hosts continue their discussion about Star Wars gaming and motion control.

What would be an ideal game to make good use of pointer controls? Besides lightsaber control, what would be best to you?
This week we pick up where Episode #18 Motion Control: Ridiculous or Ridiculously Fun? left off. Nathan and Mark are joined by William Devereux of the We Talk Clones podcast to continue exploring Motion Control on next Gen systems, and the possibilities of future gaming utilizing new technologies.

Does motion control require a player to have a certain level of fitness?

Play Station’s Move layout is explained by Nathan.
Maybe there needs to be more wheel/joystick games and controllers?
PS Move may be what the Wiimotes should have been… but does Kinect have it the best?
Is adult gaming dead in the water? In other words, are most games now being aimed more at the younger generations of Star Wars Fans?

Battlefront 3, Imperial Commando, Jedi Knight… there are so many games that are considered “no brainers” that are still anticipated!
Are games viable with the Star Wars expanded universe currently? Are the ‘Big Three’ viable characters for modern Star Wars games?
Are more fans being introduced to the novels and comics through comics, or the other way around?
Marva Zane in Star Wars: Kinect and some of the story mode are discussed.

The next generation of Star Wars motion controlled games need strong characters, or should put already strongly developed characters into the game.
William talks about TOR and the character interaction.

Star Wars: Scourge is mentioned for doing well with new character cast, reminding Nathan of his most recently eaten words on the novel. The hosts explore the story in the Battlefront games, and the drive to know more. Sometimes having a great story hooks even more fans. Nathan reminds us of the hand held Battlefront games and their story-centric plots.

Is there a game that you might drop $300+ dollars to get a new console/tv to play the game to its fullest?

Are games without much of a story preferred? Or not?
Nathan micro rants: “CURSE YOU BEST BUY!”
Should really good game plots become books?
Mark micro rants about formats and The Clone Wars paperback novel only being available in the UK.

Also, are graphics in games what they should be, compared with what it truly available? Nathan explains his financial fiasco and engagment rings, regarding savings for SWEU material. And, Mark managed to fall out of his seat while recording. Nathan breaks down prices for the next gen systems and the various things needed to get into Motion Control Gaming.
Mark explains his venture into the next gen console war, and his MOST REGRETTABLE choice.
In the state of the gaming market, is now a good time to jump into a next gen system? Or are the NEXT next gen systems looming around the corner? WiiU we’re aiming our Death Star at YOU!

Motion Control: Ridiculous or Ridiculously Fun? – SWBTF #18 May 03, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week the guys are joined by William Devereux from We Talk Clones to discuss video games, motion control, and story telling through games.

Nathan eats his words with a side of Nerf.
Mark’s an “old school gamer”? Oh… he means “couch potato”.
Nathan breaks down the three main systems and their individual motion control set ups.
    We have the Wii!

We have the Ps3 and the Xbox 360!

Nathan explains the exhaustion of motion control, and THANK the maker for the breaks cut scenes provide.

Could Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 ever work in a motion controlled world?
Mass Effect 3 was brought up, with it’s integrated motion control/voice control technology.
All hosts seem to enjoy the Force Unleashed’s use of Telekentic abilities.

Voice commands could change how we interact with our games. Imagine a Battlefront or Rogue Squadron game where you give your squads commands with your voice!

Or a version of Knights of the Old Republic for the Kinect!
Kinect blends sound and motion controls, and opens the doors to many great game possibilities.
Your hosts discussed Kinect: Star Wars and its many aspects, as well as plot.
As with all things Star Wars, perhaps Star Wars Kinect isn’t aimed for you. The hosts explore what that means. You can’t please 100% of the fans 100% of the time.

They explored the stories behind Kinect Star Wars.

Mr. Potato-Windu seemed to get no love in his Kinect rendering, whereas Yoda looked spectacular.

What are your favorite Star Wars video games and why? And, would your pick of favorite games change if they were made for different systems?

Part two of this episode will be coming soon!

Keep it on the Rails! – SWBTF #17 Apr 26, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week’s discussion is about Star Wars publishing.

Is it better having a series written by one author, co-authored, or multiple authors?

Mark tries out a new recording room this week, and Nathan keeps outing himself this month.
What is you stance on the big series?
Has Del Rey dropped the ball? Did they go the wrong direction after the New Jedi Order? Mark explains why he feels the NJO was a success and that Del Rey needs to go back to a well thought out series.

Did Legacy of the Force not do well because the authors didn’t pick up each other’s stories? Did it leave the reader feeling disconnected? Nathan says the unthinkable… INTERCHANGABLE!?!!!
You hosts take a quick look at certain author’s trends. Lucenopedia, Zahn’s Thrawn/Mara, Karen’s Mando=centric, Stover- too deep to think and more. They mentioned Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Meh.

They focus on the FotJ series and the styles of each author. Does the post NJO suffer from a Denning thick direction? Or does this strengthen that end of the era having one author being the backbone of the plots?
They touch on closing stories. Bases loaded, bottom of the ninth, did Denning hit a homer? Or did he bunt? Fans seem to have varying opinions on this.

Nathan touches on the WARS series, the direction the writters take with that series, and how it plays out.

When authors pick up on elements from one story and use those in the next you feel like the story is connected. One author vs co authors argument is that they focus on whether a reader can tell when the author shifts during the story. Nathan explains the process of story writing in Star Wars when he wrote his Tales story.

Do co-authored books constantly evolve as a series is written? Do ideas generate as the writing team works? This could for some plots to be forgotten about as the story progresses.
Do authors different perceptions hurt the story? Some of the plots and story-lines seemed to be dropped in LotF when the authors would swap out from book to book.
Is it a failure to have a series with a villian not plotted out? Do the stories need more planning and a little thing called an exit strategy or not? Was Jacen Solo’s story sacrificed on the alter of publishing?

Is there more pay off in a larger series or a smalle one? Should authors spell things out? Should things be left so wide open that multiple answers can be seen? Though this could cause fan fights across fandom.
Should series be released closer together? Does the long gap between hardcovers HURT series?
NJO: One series? Or an Era set with standalones, duologies and trilogies?

This week’s topic makes both hosts want to pull their hair out.

Can multiple author trilogies work if each focuses on separate points of views? For instance one takes the Jedi, one takes the Sith, and another takes the Empire/Galactic Alliance. Could that work?
Mark rants his irritation with Del Rey’s choice to “not do large series” due to the last two, nine book series success ( or rather lack there of). He feels they made the wrong call, or drawn the wrong conclusion from the complaints about those series.
Plans for books, no matter how well planned, take the right author to bring them to life.
Is a solid plan, or a free flowing idea creating process better? Who’s to say?
Who green lights new changes that over rule older plot elements in the EU saga?
Quality control has no control these days, it would seem. Is this the plan?!
Mark hopes they avoid the villian of the week stragety, or place some bigger series in eras that are not well explored.
Did the fans who were vocal about disliking larger series scare Del Rey into giving up on what COULD be a winning strategy?
One off adventures that play into a larger story- this is ONE example of successful story planning.
Sometimes happy accidents happen when a character grows into a main element.
Should Del Rey start planning now for a EPIC large story come the 40th anniversary?
Does having a plan matter to you? Are fans divided on this?

Nathan calls out Zahn over the planning of Mara and Luke’s marriage all along.
J.I.N.O…. Mark is starting to understand that he’s Jacen In Name Only, a concept that drove him nuts, but now…. perhaps it’s more dead on then he originally figured.
“Derailment” it would seem is the biggest offender to most fans. Be it character, over all plot, what ever, keep it on the rails!

Big Three? Or Not Big Three? – SWBTF #16 Apr 19, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films, your weekly look at the Star Wars expanded universe!

On this episode the guys talk about what’s new, including Blue Rebels?!

Baby Jaina is all cuteness with dad’s saber.

Both hosts will have to rearrange or purchase new book shelves in order to hold their whole Star Wars media collection! Here’s Mark’s shelf.

Images of Nathan’s EU collection can be found here, though he has yet to finish purchasing and arranging his collection.

Move over Garibaldi, Star Wars will be taking over your space on the wall!

Is Star Wars viable with EU only characters? And can the Saga use non film characters and thrive? Or even survive?
Should new characters get more page time, or less? Corran Horn finds some page love in Apocalypse.

The Old Republic is a prime example of new characters. Jaden Korr, and other game characters have been featured prominently in single novels.

Wedge Antilles was a minor film character who’s character was featured greatly in the EU.
Can Del Rey play off the younger generation?
Nathan mentions Scourge and talks about how the publisher entices readers.

Mark has a man crush on Corran Horn, and he’s not a film character, or even a main character in the EU, like Jacen or Jaina Solo.

The potential for great stories is ever present in the ever expanding Star Wars universe.

Red Harvest was a great stand alone that did just that: stood completely alone. No known character was used, and it was set in its own timeframe.
They pause and talk about TOR, the comic and it’s book and how that factors into the over all saga.
Nathan says the 5 words that kill Mark “I don’t care about K’kruhk”
This sets Mark off in a rant about K’kruhk being back in the Order since the end of the New Jedi Order.

Dawn of the Jedi – could this be your reboot series?

Do most stand alone books cover game characters vs newly invented ones? For instance Jaden Korr and Revan vs Corran Horn and Ganner Rhysode.
Is it time for Yoda’s force ghost to make an appearance?

Also, is Jaina on equal footing with the big three? How will they phase the big three out? Eventually they’ll be too old to continue to realistically use… And, what does a post Apocalypse EU look like?
From what readers DO KNOW from the Legacy comic series, readers know some of the direction.
Have characters been killed off for ratings? Was Jacen’s character prematurely killed off?
At some point the big three will have to bow out, period. And wouldn’t that scenario be very hard to market?

Is Darth Vader shoehorned into the EU between Episode three and four? The Clone Wars seems to be having a hard time with cramming in the story-line as well. Settings in the eras farthest from that bright center (the films) seem to be the best place to use non film characters.
Nathan and Mark also discuss the cancelation of Blood Oath and fan reactions to that.

Ahsoka is comes very close to being a canon main character, and she came fairly late to Star Wars, publishing wise.

Your hosts also talk about Maul as a recurring character….

And Nathan starts the doomsday clock of the Saga…..

Wouldn’t it be nice to have an EU tv series? Something like: X-Wing: Wraith Squadron coming to television soon! Ahh Mark really gets onto the loving of Wedge Antilles bandwagon.

Should we have more book trailers?

Mark looks at the New Jedi Order and how it was a series made up of standalones and doulogies and trilogies, not just one big series even though that was how it was marketed.

Should the line up of authors from the Legacy of the Force series to the Fate of the Jedi series have been rotated? When books/authors don’t line up it sometimes brings the reader out of the story, and it translates to series as well.

They guys finish by reminding themselves that they love the saga, and that some times concern and passion can be seen as being negative. Sometimes it just shows you care.

After all, the hosts want their children and their children’s children to be having fun with old and new Star Wars adventures to read and watch.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and may the Force be you, always!

Sith vs Jedi! Or Was That Jedi vs Sith? – SWBTF #15 Apr 12, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode, your hosts Nathan and Mark discuss the type of storytelling in Star Wars, specifically in reference to the similar patterns you see in the Star Wars universe. Sith come and go, they rise to power and are defeated, only to rise, once again a threat. Is it a pattern we enjoy, and one that is beneficial to Star Wars, or not? There are, after all, power parallels and patterns in our own history.

Lather, rinse and repeat: This is a buisness model, right? Does the EU’s circular nature with the Sith undermine the ending of the Return of the Jedi?

Can the ever going battles between the Jedi and the Sith be harmful to the Saga?

For movie only fans, do stories like Dark Empire feel like a slap in the face of Vader’s sacrifice?
Mark tries to get into the mindset to address the issue untainted by the Dark Side (the EU Side.) New Sith, Old Sith, One Sith, Lost Tribe Sith, Sith Emperors, Sith Marauders, Sith Wannabe’s, Banite Sith, Daminite Sith, how many Sith are there? Too many? The hosts delve deep in this episode.

Nathan looks forward to Kol and Cade Skywalker, the struggles of the future Skywalkers, and the Skywalker line being destined to stand against the Sith.

Nathan uses history to explain how the circles of life work and how it is plausible in the EU to have the Sith keep coming back like a bad cold.
Mark points out that even the Mandalorians keep coming back like the Sith. That the Jedi, Sith and the Mando’s are the BIG THREE of the Star Wars Universe. And, he ponders Emperor Palpatine’s living past RotJ and how Lucas himself was behind the “cloning of Palpatine” and how this may or may not have caused issues. Was a happy medium found? Or is there still potential for more retcons and additional stories around the Emperor’s personal clone usage?

Can the Sith be wiped out? In the EU that doesn’t seem to be the case, sometimes. Where can the story of Kam Solusar be found? Untold stories… who sets the bar? What IS off limits? Should the Sith have been left off limits? The hosts look at the examples of the Re-emergant Sith and if that was done well or not.

They discuss Lumiya’s early adventures. Mark points out that Darth Maul’s living after being halved shouldn’t come to a surprise to many EU fans. For instance, there’s Simus – the Sith, disembodied HEAD! If HE can live being just as a head, then Maul’s survival is a little less surprising.

Mark does not trust any Sith, and would like to see more clear cut answers to his questions about them from future Star Wars novels. Nathan points out how Lumiya’s backstory could have had more page time in Legacy of the Force. Then he gives a quick break down of the Sith Order over time. They discuss Untainted Sith… Sith who are Jedi? Jedaii?! They also discuss the Nightsisters – the female order who remind us very much of the Sith at times. Mark ponders that it could be worse then just a lot of Sith. The potential for more species being corrupted by Force users is very high in the SWEU.

They discuss the Lightning Rod of the Sith, (Jacen Solo) and more!
The Sith are like mold. You think you’ve wiped them all out, and they come back, more dangerous then you originally thought. Don’t laugh, more Jedi succumb to the Sith Mold then you might think! Also, some fan’s complain about the Sith re-occuring, but not so many argue the same about the Empire, even though the same case could be made.

Enjoy this episode, and never quote us the odds!
