    Cramming: I’m Stuffed – SWBTF #14 Apr 04, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This time on Star Wars Beyond the Films, your hosts Mark and Nathan discuss crowding of content in the Star Wars timeline, specifically in certain areas where there seem to be so many (albeit good) stories set in one, short span of time that you wonder how the characters could possibly get from one place to the next so quickly, and when they might have time to go to the restroom.

They also both had several, exciting announcements to make!

On Friday, March 23rd, Nathan and his girlfriend Jodi got engaged!

On March 18th, Mark become a father once again when Jaina, he and his wife’s little sword of the Jedi, was born!

A hearty congratulations to both of them!

Do we need more Han and Chewbacca stories, more Luke stories, and more stories of that kind (especially if they’re set right after Yavin or in other, heavily explored time periods), when there are already so many stories of the “Big Three”…. Will these stories need to be forcibly shoehorned in just to fit with the continuity and specific time-frames? And, will this be a problem, or something that fan’s enjoy and want?

Are certain parts of the timeline too packed? Does adding one more adventure hurt other stories integrity? Does it even matter?

Star Wars: Scoundrels was brought up in the discussion, but are the Big Three the only characters who could be susceptible to cramming? Will Scoundrels be more like Fast Five Star Wars style? Wait, Nathan’s actually excited about Scoundrels?!

Rebel Force was one of the latest additions to these timeframes, as was Death Troopers, and Shadow Games.
Are there Original Trilogy time frames that are lost to fandom? (Older works that have not been re-written or re-printed.)
Should there be more “Don’t go there” places in the timeline? Places where the EU should have to leave alone for now?
Do fans want more cramming of the OT timeline with more Big Three tales in-spite of that time being already a bit crowded with the main characters tales?

Did the old way of publishing cause more issues with stories being tread over?

In the Insider issue 132 there was an article, Star Wars: Expanding Empire, by Ryder Windham which garnered high praise from both hosts. This Insider article deals with many of these publishing issues.

Rebel Mission to Ord Mantell, the Death Star plans, and a couple other story-lines that have been covered from multiple angles sometime create the potential for issues, yet when issues come up they are sometimes glossed over.
The Death Star Plans have been chronicled in: Interlude at Darkknell, Jedi Dawn, Dark Forces, Death Star, Shadow Games and possibly others.

On the other hand, Invasion was held back until after other stories had finished/were settled.
Should stories that are so interconnected be more well thought out vs, added to over the years with new info added with each new additions?
Another factor in this is: Does the format matter to you as a reader? Meaning, are games less important than the comics to you? Or do the comics mean less than the books? Do the books mean less than the movies? Do they all mean the same barring conflicts, and is it different for each individual?

Has continuity been a less important issue from the corporate perspective?
After much discussion the hosts feel that between 4 and 5 is the most crammed of all the Star Wars timeline. But they do see the merit in telling the back-story of the main characters. What about the other EU Characters though? Mara gets page time, but what about the Solo kids?

The Big Three are the touch stones of the EU in a lot of ways. They ARE the gateway to the EU for many first time readers.
And sometimes you’re not the reader the publisher was aiming at.

Mark rants about the New Jedi Order Era being shoehorned by it’s own “series” and the need of more Tales books, Tales of the New Jedi Order and so forth. Corran Horn’s leave of absence could be fun to explore. And new characters’ back-stories being explored could feel more like mining new information, instead of cramming.
Mark continued with his occasional feelings he gets from the marketing and publishing of the EU. Nathan draws attention to series that play into the other side of things, and balance was achieved.
Nathan brings up the Star Wars Adventure Journals and why they were so much fun, and how many of the Tales stories came from the Adventure Journals.

Nathan ponders on stories that could happen in the crammed timeframe that could work very well, and both hosts feel that crammed eras can have great stories. The stories just need to be done well, and not rushed. A Boba Fett’s past Flow chart may be needed.

Star Wars has proved time and again that it can make things work. You just have to roll with the punches. You can’t have a light side without a dark side, but you do need a Chosen One to bring balance to both sides of the Force!

Enjoy this episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films, and may the Force be with you!

    Saga vs. Setting – SWBTF #13 Mar 28, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome once again to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode, your hosts Nathan and Mark debate whether the current approach to Star Wars publishing focuses on the broader overall saga with one through-line, or whether it uses the Star Wars universe as a setting for experimental storytelling in different forms and genres that don’t necessarily tie into the broader storylines (while certainly still being part of canon).

Is Star Wars sold to us as a saga, or not? Do fans prefer an overarching saga, or a mix in which you’d have an expansive universe with many different stories, but still tied in with the history of the universe and having a single continuity? Or would they rather go the extreme Marvel route and have multiple canons and stories?

Does continuity influence the fans viewpoints on Star Wars as a saga?

How do ‘one and done’ books tie into the overall saga? Books like Shadow Games, vs. books like those in the Fate of the Jedi series…. we may enjoy reading both, but which serves a greater continuity better? Perhaps more importantly, what direction will Star Wars publishing take in the future in regards to the different kinds of books? We’ve had many different types of standalones and series, trilogies and duologies that explore many different characters, places and stories. This could lead to believing that Star Wars is turning into more of a setting, with many different stories in it, and not just one saga about a set of characters and their offspring.

And, we mentioned this once before, but how hard must it be to write in the Star Wars universe, particularly if you aren’t very familiar with it! In the Book of Sith, Luke Skywalker makes a note saying: “The chronology of the Clone Wars is confusing.” and Dan Wallace, a Star Wars author, writes in his blog after quoting Luke on this: “Don’t I know it, brother!”

So which would you prefer? A saga, or a setting? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

    Race Factor – SWBTF #12 Mar 21, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films, Nathan and Mark are joined by special guest host Berent, of Star Wars Action News and Republic Forces Radio Network fame.

They discuss racial equality in the Star Wars universe.

Are the two, main, African American characters in the Star Wars movies (Lando and Mace) there just to ‘fill the quota’?

Is it better to have skin color and aliens visibly represent racial equality? Or is it better to accurately portray cultural differences and aspects?

And, is the portrayal of racial stereotypes within an alien culture racist in and of itself?

It seems like the human race in Star Wars tends to be mostly portrayed as light-skinned… But the alien races in Star Wars tend to have a number of cultural differences and ethnicitys. Even droids in Star Wars are more diverse than the Jedi!

And what class of citizen do droids and clones fall into? Especially with The Clone Wars series going on, it’s something that’s certainly being explored in universe.

What do you think about race, culture and equality in Star Wars? Let us know in the comments below!

    Personal Canon…. and Here We Go! – SWBTF #11 Mar 14, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week Nathan and Mark are joined by our own Aaron Goins to discuss a topic that drives Nathan from Naboo to Coruscant and back again. *drumroll* Personal Canon. What is personal canon? What is canon for that matter? This episode your hosts delve into everything from the films, the comics, the books, and the TV shows. They also discuss the tier’s to the canon system. Who knew canon was so convoluted?

Has the Lucas giant created a system that can’t work? How does the retcon world spin? With a LIFO system (Last in first out) in place, can continuity continue, or is this the real reason fans rely on personal canon? How far can one go with their personal canon?
How does Simon Pegg fit into this discussion? He’s a fan who drew a line. Listen to learn how it applies to this week’s topic.
Greedo makes an apearance with his recent TCW appearance causing shifting continuity, and Nathan breaks down his real issue with personal canon.

What is your take on things? Do you have an element of the saga that doesn’t happen to be in your personal canon? Or would rather something else happened? For example, a certain character’s death, (or the Holiday Special anyone)?

Should stories be set in stone? Or is leaving things open to reader interpretation the better route? A good example is Bane’s death.
And, is personal canon intelectually dishonest? Or is it a coping mechanism? Have a listen and tell them yourselves on Facebook!

Aaron brings up parallel universes and the stance of canon and continuity from Lucasbooks/Lucasfilms, and how fans interpret those stances.

With the many books, games, The Clone Wars and more that take us from Episode 2 to Episode 3 having very different paths, is there a way to avoid having two different universes? George Lucas even mentions “different universes” where as Leland Chee has said that there won’t be more then one universe. Does this muddy things too much for fans? Is it time for an Essential Guide to Understanding the Canon of Star Wars?

They also discuss George’s “vision”, how fans react to it, and how far this “vision” goes. Mark wonders if we call it a “vision” still, if things are being made up on the fly? They also discuss the rift that the “vision” and continuity causes among the fans. Is personal canon a nessecary step for fans to continue to enjoy ALL of Star Wars?

All in a day’s work here on Star Wars Beyond the Films!

    Beyond 3D – SWBTF #10 Mar 07, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This week The Defender and The Guru of our beloved EU (Mark & Nathan) tackle Star Wars in 3D and the viability of 3D in general. Is it a gimmick? Is it the next phase of the evolution of film as we know it?

They discuss the Nintendo 3DS, 3D movies, Glasses free 3D, Real D vs Dolby, 3D vs HD vs Blu-Ray; is theater a dying breed in terms of visual picture quality and overall social experience? Effects on 3D: are they so special? Do they give you a headache?

Was the 3D utilized to it’s fullest? Or should George and co. have added to the fight scenes to maxamize on 3D gimmickry? Or is it too soon after the latest round of additions in the Blu-Ray?

Should Star Wars games like PS3 Move and Star Wars Kinect utilize the 3D technologies? Where’s the Rogue Squadron: New Jedi Order game?! Or Battlefront 3? Should Lucasfilm’s energy perhaps be devoted somewhere else?

Opinions run rampant as the discussion twists and turns more times then Boba Fett’s backstory, with 3D and so much more!

Mysteries of the Expanse – SWBTF #9 Mar 01, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings exalted ones, and welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films, your hosts Nathan and Mark are joined by Kelly Adams, long time Star Wars (and Yoda) fan, writer and podcaster! They discuss a number of things about mysteries in Star Wars: do you like knowing everything about everything in Star Wars? Would you prefer for there to be a lot of mystery surrounding your favorite aspects of the universe? How would you like mysteries and reveals to be balanced? Are some time periods in Star Wars too densely packed to leave any room for mysteries? Do you prefer cliff hangers? Or hate them?

They talk about gaps in the timeline, and Yoda’s past.

What about the fates of Rex and Ahsoka? Does knowing too much spoil it?

    What will happen to them?

And then there’s The Fandom (it’s a) TRAP! Does expecting too much cause disappointment? A story can’t please 100% of the people consuming it, 100% of the time. They also discuss the Nub and Midichlorians.

Has the EU grown too big, and has this caused issues with keeping the mystery? And, be honest, do you have time to re-read Star Wars books you especially liked if you’re also trying to read all Star Wars books as they come out? If you’re behind in reading them, does that mean you’ll be spoiled, and lose interest? Ah the pressures of being an expanded universe fan, keeping up the StarWarsdashians!

They also discus the clone conundrum,

and Jason Solo’s 5 year journey.

Hope you enjoy this episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films, and may the Force be with you always!

    Unlocking the Mysteries – SWBTF #8 Feb 22, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode, Mark and Nathan discuss The Tenebrous Way, and how it ties in with Darth Plagueis.

Many ideas and topics are discussed, what affects does your approach to the Force have on your usage of it? Tenebrous pushed Plagueis so far into the metaphysical realm of the Force, that Plagueis doesn’t have much use for the scientific side of it. Sith are about extremes, and when you go towards one extreme, you lose the usefulness of the other extreme, with no healthy balance in-between.

They also discuss Maxi-chlorians, and their usage.

They also discuss the pros and cons of the Star Wars Insider and other subscriptions.

Darth Plagueis: The Dark has Risen – SWBTF #7 Feb 15, 2012
    Show notes

Greetings all, and welcome to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This is the last of three episodes discussing the Star Wars novel, Darth Plagueis. Joining your hosts, Nathan and Mark, once again is guest host Peter Morrison!

All three hosts on this episode really enjoyed Part 3 of Darth Plagueis, and the “plots within subplots” that came to a head. The Sith Grand Plan, how does it unravel? Power corrupts; but absolute power corrupts absolutely….

They also discuss the birth/creation of Anakin Skywalker…

This book has fascinating implications on the Star Wars universe, have you read it? Do you like it? Let the hosts know, and enjoy this episode of Star Wars Beyond the Films!

Darth Plagueis: At Last We Will Have Revenge – SWBTF #6 Feb 09, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

This is the second of three episodes discussing the Star Wars novel, Darth Plagueis. Joining your hosts, Nathan and Mark, once again is guest host Peter Morrison!

Darth Plagueis provokes many interesting theories and thoughts about the Force and it’s usage. Is the Force more like a sentient being than we first thought? What are these interesting ways of creating, and destroying, life using the Force? Are there limits to the power of the Force and what you can do with it? Force-healing with the light and dark side, what are the differences?

More discussion about the history and background of the Sith followed, with a focus on Darth Maul’s training and background, and the involvement of the Nightsisters in this aspect of the plot.

Also, there were a few comparisons of Sith to vampires….

Darth Plagueis is a fascinating novel, one of the reasons why being the multiple “plot breadcrumbs” that wind their way throughout the book. You’re always making new discoveries as you read.

Darth Plagueis: At Last We Will Reveal Ourselves – SWBTF #5 Feb 01, 2012
    Show notes

Welcome back to Star Wars Beyond the Films!

On this episode your hosts Nathan and Mark are joined by Peter Morrison, founder of LightSaber Rattling, and they discuss the Star Wars novel Darth Plagueis.

This episode is full of spoilers; you have been warned!

Right away your hosts start off by talking about the fifth, Bith Sith full of pith, Darth Tenebrous!

Also, they disagree a bit on the topic of the “Lucenopedia-ness” of the book, though they all like different aspects of the incorporation of references to other expanded universe works in Darth Plagueis.

Was Darth Plagueis truly wise? How did Palpatine grow into his role as a Sith Lord? What do your hosts think of the first part of the book? All this and more coming up!
