Facing Your Breast Cancer Diagnosis With Vicki Lindsey Oct 13, 2021
    Show notes

It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! If you a woman over 50 and have not scheduled a mammogram this year, do it. Save those Ta-Tas!!
Today on the podcast I am talking with my step-mom, Vicki Lindsey, who is a 17 year stage 4 breast cancer survivor. She shares her story of discovery, diagnosis, plan, and treatment while giving her best advice on how to best deal with the news of a cancer diagnosis when and if you get one.
Here are the takeaways from today:

    1. 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
    2. 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of the disease.
    3. The most significant risk factors for breast caner are being female and our increasing age.
    4. In the event of a center diagnosis, after getting through your initial fear, you need to make a plan.
    5. Telling friends and family and developing your community around you is very important in how you will deal with your diagnosis. Everyone brings something to the table.
    6. Also having a “medical team” in place at the start of your treatment is helpful.
    7. Finding and being part of a survivor group is a great way to deal with your diagnosis. Other women can answer all types of questions you may have and most important they will give you confidence and HOPE.
    8. Try to keep a sense of normalcy throuhout your treatment. Humor always helps.
    9. If you know someone dealing with breast cancer - and you don’t know what to say, invite them to lunch or a movie, or coffee - anything to just help bring a sense of normalcy. If they want to talk about it, they will.
    10. There can totally be more FEAR about the chemo than surgery. Talk to others about their experience, knowing that yours may be similar or could be different.
    11. If you can, continue to work to help keep your mind and life in a normalcy state.
    12. There is so much support all around - wig makers, tutorials on how to apply makeup, support groups - use everything that is available to you.
    13. Go get your mammogram every single year, especially after you turn 50. Every normal mammogram is a baseline for the next year to see if there are any changes. If you catch anything early from any of your yearly appointments, the treatment will be much more effective.

There are chapters of the Bosom Buddies support group all over the country and you search the internet via your location to find one.

Need Posture Correction? | How To Begin Righting Those Office Chair Wrongs With Massage Therapist Mike Purvis Oct 06, 2021
    Show notes

Mike Purvis has been working on some of my back and hamstring issues for years. You would think that these issues would have come from some of the sports that I'm involved in, but NO - both have to do with my posture when I'm sitting at my desk or while I'm driving.
I read an article recently about how desk chairs are doing immeasurable damage to all us that sit in them all day, at least 5 days a week. When I went to see Mike about some of these issues and asked him to talk to us about it on the podcast, he agreed.
    Today's Takeaways:
    1. Finding a good massage therapist depends on what you need a massage for. Each has a specialty. It’s like finding a doctor. You don’t want to go to a therapist that specializes in 20 different kinds of massage, that’s like going to a GP to have her deliver your baby.
    2. Everything that we are doing is in front of us - and we are in that forward position for hours on end. We need to think about getting up every now and then to stretch backwards - to stretch that peck out - stretch that chest to help us not be caved forward where we end up walking like turtles.
    3. There is no better time than now to start making some little changes to your posture while sitting. Everything has to be accounted for - upper body and lower body.
    4. Even though you may be working at home and not at a “desk” per se, it’s not really about the surface you are working on, it’s about the height of the chair and the angle of your arms so that you’re not driving your shoulders into your ears.
    5. Get a good desk chair to start with. If you get up out of your chair and can see that your body is still sitting there, it’s probably time for a new one.
    6. You more than likely sit at your desk more than you sleep, but we’ll all invest in a good mattress before investing in a good desk chair.
    7. Do not cross your legs when sitting. It causes one hip to be elevated which can cause a leg discrepancy. Leg discrepancies are problem in your basement, in your foundation, that affects all the floors of your body.
    8. We all need to do a posture analysis. Do you drive leaned to the right? Do you carry a heavy bag on one shoulder every day?
    9. The best stretches to do in your desk chair are Ts and Ys. Make a T with your arms then make a Y with your arms.
    10. Put something up under your feet at the desk. Change your foot position. That changes your hip angle during the day. It lets your hamstrings and calves open up.
    11. Using an external monitor instead of looking down at your laptop screen can help your neck and the phenomenon of “phone neck”.
    12. We (as in our bodies) are the only machines that we ignore the check engine lights every single day. Taking care of yourself doesn’t take hours - it’s where can you find seconds here and there. They all add up.
    13. When it comes to taking advantage of massage, Mike uses the old adage “Drink before you are thirsty.” Don’t wait until you can’t function to get help. And don’t be surprised when one visit doesn’t fix all your problems.
    14. Mike’s best advice is to hydrate. Bottom line. Hydrating is like running a water hose through your gutters to get them clean. His other best advice is to be self-aware of your posture during your waking hours and stretch whenever you can.

Losing (A Lot Of) Weight After 50 With Cathy Lindsey Sep 29, 2021
    Show notes

If you've ever thought that you couldn't lose weight, even a lot of weight, because you are over 50, then you haven't met my sister, Cathy Lindsey. Cathy is 75 pounds into her weight loss goal of 100 pounds by Thanksgiving.
She shares her story about her past with her weight, food, and how that all felt growing up through her teens, twenties and into her fifties. She shares her moment of realization that this was a journey she absolutely needed to take. And how even though she had tried EVERYTHING over the years, this time she was going to be successful.
She expresses that even if you feel hopeless, you are not alone and you can too can take off weight if you are REALLY willing and are open to change your mindset. Cathy's story is inspirational and she hopes it is a lifeline for you.
Among other things, the takeaways from today's episode are:
    1. Keep a food journal - it's a pain, but it makes you ultra aware of everything you are putting in your body. Cathy uses the My Fitness Pal app. Trainer Joe says, "You don't have to count calories, but your body counts every single one of them."
    2. Community and support of your goal are so important. You will be more successful when you are engaged with people who are there with you.
    3. Don't compare your weight loss journey to anyone else's because you will be disappointed.
    4. Getting into a program for weight loss that costs money should be considered a treat for yourself. It's an act of love for yourself.
    5. Food can be an addiction that you have to overcome. You have to set the realization that food is fuel.
    6. You have to have a moment when you decide that this is something you are going to do and you LIVE by that. Day in, Day out. It is your focus. Tell yourself I AM DOING THIS.
    7. Exercise is extra to the weight loss journey. It is more about being fit. A little exercise helps in your journey, but it's not the number one factor in losing weight.
    8. There is no cheating on a diet - you are treating yourself.
    9. Don'ts focus on the things you can't have, focus on what you can have.
    10. You can do it. It doesn't matter how old you are, how big you are. You just have to decide that you are going to do it. There is nothing more important that you. Not even food.
    11. Being 50 is no excuse. Be happy. Use your time to seek out new opportunities, things that help your body, that help your mind, things that you love.
Cathy has been working is Trainer Joe's Health and Weightloss. His website is: https://trainerjoes.com/ . He is also on YouTube and Instagram @trainerjoe_21day.
Cathy is ready to be your cheerleader and if you would like to touch base with her to get any recommendations or suggestions, she can be reached at cathyjlindsey@gmail.com
Thank you for listening today and please share with anyone you feel could benefit from this show. I know, I know, I know there are many out there who could start to believe in themselves and start down this daunting road following the example of my sister.
If would like to reach or follow me, my website is https://llmcshane.com and I am at @llmcshane and @lamcshane on instagram. I also have a new Facebook Page for this podcast and it is https://www.facebook.com/llmcshane. I'm taking requests for topics and guests.
Mike and I will be back on Friday for another Friday Night BeerBlog - remember it is it's own podcast now - so search for Friday Night BeerBlog at your favorite podcast site and don't forget to FOLLOW both of them so that new episodes will drop automatically into your app.
Sending much love and wishes for an amazing Fall. xo

Recognizing Burnout And Regaining Momentum Sep 15, 2021
    Show notes

Burnout is real and nothing to be ashamed of. We all face burnout at one time or another. The problem is when you are facing the early signs and either don't realize them or ignore them until it's too late.
Today I'm talking about my recent awareness of being in the early stages or burnout and what I plan to do to combat them and to get back on track.
I am referring to research done by Winona State University in Minneapolis on the 5 Phases of Burnout (https://www.winona.edu/stress/9Burnout.HTML)
And I'm using a lot of @jayshetty 's advice on how to recognize the 7 early signs of burnout and how to start healing - along with some of my personal experience. I refer to Jay's podcast On Purpose and specifically this one: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/7-early-signs-of-burnout-7-simple-and-practical-ways/id1450994021?i=1000532568300
Do let burnout fester - face it head on and deal. And know that only YOU can deal with your own burnout. Not your mother, not your significant other. You are in charge of you so do like I told myself and GET A GRIP! : ) - and a plan.
Thanks for listening and hanging in there when I needed to stop and shut down for a few weeks. Things on this side of August feel so much better already.
If you've enjoyed this podcast please FOLLOW (on Apple Podcasts) and feel free to share this message with anyone that may need it. And go check out Jay Shetty's podcast On Purpose. As a monk, there is something about his delivery that is real, but also real soothing.

Stress Management Through Mindfulness with Paula Kommor Jul 21, 2021
    Show notes

My mindfulness practice of daily meditation saved me during the pandemic. No joke. Being mindful and connecting to my senses in the present moment kept me from stressing out over quarantine, the need for work, worry over my children. I've never been so "in touch" with myself.
But like anything, if you don't use it, you lose it. And with the World starting back up, that mindful, meditation practice tends to be the first thing to go when you get busy. And eventually all those stresses start to invade again.
Stress management and mindfulness expert Paula Kommor talks to us to today about mindfulness, the meditative process, the benefits of being more mindful, and even leads us through a short meditation.
Some of the other things we discuss are the following takeaways:
    1. Mindfulness is being non-judgmentally aware of the present moment. It's turning on your senses and turning off your thinking brain.
    2. Mindfulness and becoming mindful is a skillset that has to be built. We aren't born mindful.
    3. It is built through meditative techniques of learning to sit with uncomfortable feelings instead of repressing them.
    4. You must carve out time and space for yourself every day to successfully manage stress.
    5. Development in a practice of meditation is trial and correct, not trial and error. Play around with it and see what works for you.
    6. You can incorporate mindfulness into any rhythmic thing you do throughout the day that engages your senses.
    7. We can have up to 40,000 thoughts a day. 70% of those are of a negative bias. So we need to focus on gratitude to balance that bias out.
    8. Mindfulness helps increase your happiness, your short term memory, your decision making ability, and your self-awareness.
    9. Mindfulness helps decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
    10. The way to encourage others around you to become more mindful is to develop a mindfulness habit yourself and become a role model for others.
    11. Starting a new mindfulness practice takes baby steps - that's why it's called a PRACTICE.
Paula is amazing and can be reached at the following places:
    Paula Kommor - 502-819-8005
    Email: paula@dynamic-wellness.com
Website: www.dynamic-wellness.com (there is a contact me area)
Paula is probably going to lead new KORU classes in the early fall, so keep an eye out for those.
The Ted Talk Paula mentioned - The gift and power of emotional courage - Susan David is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDQ1Mi5I4rg and her book is "Emotional Agility".
Thank you so much for listening. I hope you give mindfulness a try. I'm going to try even harder on mine. And if you need to just start, take off your shoes while at your desk and feel the floor under your feet. TRUST ME!

In this week's installment of the Friday Night BeerBlog I'm talking about my friend that passed away this week. He was a typical male - he wanted to be the strong one for everyone and save loved ones from their own personal issues. And then he passed away.

On a quick FNBB tonight I'm talking about how freaked out I was when I had to leave my old phone at Verizon to transfer all of the data to my new phone. It was an afternoon freak-fest as I checked for my phone every 10 seconds.
We've become so reliant on them. There isn't really any other explanation. For me, I hate to admit it, but I need to know where it is all the time.

What You Need To Know To Get Your Affairs In Order | Estate Planning Over 50 With Attorney Nicole Willet-Jones Jul 07, 2021
    Show notes

Today I am sitting down with estate attorney Nicole Willet-Jones who is sharing such important information about getting our estate affairs in order to give us piece of mind in this area.
The things we talk about today:
    1. Things to think about going into estate planning -
    a. What is your goal? Who are you taking care of?
    b. How do you own things? Joint or Individual
    c. Getting organized
    d. Personal items distribution
    2. This is good time to look at other financial planning and getting your beneficiaries on other retirement, life insurance policies updated or making sure they are correct.
    3. Getting your Living Will in place. This is your healthcare surrogate. This is also important for your children over 18 and especially for single people.
    4. Getting your Power of Attorney in place. This will give your choice of person the authority to take care of financial and legal matters. Also important for our children over 18 to put into place.
    5. An executor is similar to a POA, but we must pick someone who has the capacity to be able to handle our affairs as it is a time consuming job.
    6. Time to do an inventory of all of your accounts, user names and passwords in order for your executor to be able to easily access your information on when things are due, how you pay for them, and ability to cancel subscriptions.
    7. Every 5 years is the best time to update your documents and why.
    8. How to talk to your parents if they haven't gotten their affairs in order.
    9. Getting your estate affairs in order isn't necessarily expensive, look at it as an investment.

On tonight's Friday Night BeerBlog we are discussing how I let loose of my purse strings and hired some experts to clean my windows. It was a big move because I had tried to cut financial corners and do it myself last year only to spend 5x the time and less than 10% of the result that they got. And the difference is amazing.
Sometimes you just gotta let got of that "I can do that" emotion and get somebody who knows what they are doing to get it done for you. It's painful, but helpful to spread the wealth in the end.
It's a lesson my thrifty self continues to learn continue to learn over and over. Let go Wilma!
Thanks for listening tonight. It was a lively conversation with Mike on a beautiful Friday night with low humidity in the midwest. Hotter days ahead, but enjoy what you've got while you've got it.
