Inspiration Series - Trying Mountain Sports After 50 With Jackie Hope Feb 23, 2022
    Show notes

Jackie Hope and her husband Ray went all in on Mountain Sports after a trip to Japan inspired them. They were near 50 years of age and decided to go all in trying out and discovering this new passion. It didn't matter that Jackie had never considered herself an athlete, they just surrounded themselves with knowledge people and took it step by step.
    Takeaways:

    1. Look for people to surround yourself with that are defying the stereotype of what it means to get older. People living vibrant lives.
    2. Start small - take baby steps to learning and enjoying adventure
    3. Join a group or club that is already involved in what you want to do - they can be your best teachers and cheerleaders. And will probably become your best friends.
    4. Know that It takes time to get out of your comfort zone.
    5. Being an athlete is not a prerequisite to trying athletic endeavors.
    6. Examine those scripts, the narrative in your head - put there in your younger years. Are they true or just a story you’ve told yourself?
    7. Don’t be afraid of or compare yourself to the Fitsters. You have as much right to try new things as anyone.
    8. Movement is for everybody. Challenge is for everybody. Sport is for everybody.
    9. Constantly challenge your limiting belief mindsets.
    10. Part of trying new challenges involves being educated and prepared.
    11. You can’t live your life in fear and not do the things that may fill you up just because something bad might happen.
    12. Doing outdoor sports puts you in nature and in an appreciation of it.
    13. To be able to have adventures, it takes a financial plan to save for it specifically. Then DO IT.
    14. A new adventure doesn’t have to be sport related - it may be something like taking up filmmaking like Jackie and Ray.
    15. If you take advantage, midlife offers a confluence of factors that help us get us where we need to go to do things we once only dreamed of.
    16. You are either an I can’t person or a I can person. There’s always going to be a next barrier.
    17. Little imposter voices may be in your head, but you can learn new things because being in midlife we are not true beginners at anything.
    18. Getting started in any new thing involves finding experts to help you start. Make sure to get the right advice.
    19. Be a good beginner. You may be younger than people teaching or leading you. Be humble and grateful. Open and willing to learn. And knowing you are not a poser. Don’t let your ego make you afraid to be the newbie.

Need Help Balancing Life? How To Survive Midlife In The Sandwich Zone With Karen Osborne Feb 16, 2022
    Show notes

Children below. Parents above. Stressed-out caregivers in the middle, who spread themselves thin between managing demands from spouses, careers, home, health and more. Also known as the "Sandwich Generation" or the "Sandwich Zone", as my guest today, Karen Osborne describes it.
    Takeaways:

    1. It’s so easy to loose yourself in the pressure being in the sandwich zone, so you need to be aware of it.
    2. There’s nothing like a situation of your child needing you and your support more than anything to highlight what is important in your life.
    3. Sometimes as a parents we have to accept that we can’t give them everything they need and be willing to look outside the home for help.
    4. As mothers we think we can fix everything, but the only thing we can do is let go. It may be hard to hear from others that your kids need something more than you can give them, but you need to listen.
    5. Parenting lesson Number one is the importance of holding space for your children and listening without giving advice or passing judgement. It’s your silliness to sit in the muck with them and just be there.
    6. Let them know that voice in their head is just a voice. and At that’s all it is.
    7. It is a fine line to walk with your parents to maintain that you are the child and they are the parent when you are having to take care of issues for them and with them. You don’t want to step on their independent toes.
    8. Death and the talk around it and aging needs to normalized. Things change, they just do. Start talks and making plans with your parents when they are in their prime and in a place to tell you what their plans are and what they want.
    9. ASK a lot of questions of your parents, their doctors and care providers. Get as informed as possible.
    10. Make sure that your siblings are involved in all conversations. There’s so much baggage of childhood that you may need to work through now.
    11. Make recording of your parents now. Get their voices and their stories so that you and your child have them in the future.
    12. Being in the middle of the sandwich zone, it is easy to feel that you are living your life for everyone else. But you need to put yourself first sometimes. Stop setting yourself on fire to make others warm.
    13. Do something for yourself every day to bring yourself joy however infinitesimal it is. Care and invest in yourself as much as you do everyone else.
    14. Being in the sandwich zone can put so much stress on you and your partner it just becomes a huge magnifying glass on issues. You are constantly in triage mode putting out fires all around you. It’s easy to lose the priority of honoring your connection as a couple.
    15. You gotta have each other’s back no matter what and you face the world together. It takes a lot of intentionality.

Menopause & Sex Hormone Testing With Nancy McElwain Feb 09, 2022
    Show notes

Nancy McElwain is on the podcast today to educate us on menopause and the importance of sex hormone testing.
So often we are left to "figure it out" ourselves, but much like when we learn about the birds and bees, we need to have someone sit down with us to explain this menopause thing so that we don't think we're crazy or that we need to take some sort of pill to mask the symptoms of what we are going through.
    Some takeaways:

    • Much like when we are young and learning about the birds and the bees, women deserve more information about peri-menopause and menopause as they approach it.
    • Symptoms that you may be entering peri-menopause are sleep disturbances, mood swings, sweats, some weigh gain, loss of muscle mass, mental fog, and vaginal dryness.
    • Hormones are the sense through which we see the world. Hormones work together in symmetry and balance so when balance is off, things go haywire.
    • When we talk about SEX HORMONES we are talking about estrogen, testosterone and progesterone.
    • The first thing that happens in menopause is the ovaries start to slow down in their production of sex hormones and the adrenal glands have to take up the slack.
    • What can make peri-menopause so difficult is that your adrenals are used to deal with stress and are already taxed so when they are asked to make more sex hormone in addition, they aren’t prepared.
    • The ease of your trip through peri-menopause and menopause is a direct correlation to the health of your adrenals as you head into it.
    • Your level of cortisol, or stress hormone, is tested to determine the health of your adrenals. If the health of the adrenals helps us through menopause, we need to get our level of stress under control .
    • The body feels stress from all sources: dietary, lifestyle, mental, emotional, physical, biochemical. So by the time women hit menopause, there is already lot of stress happening.
    • The first thing to do when holistically dealing with stress is to sit down with a piece of paper and write all of the tangible things that cause you stress.
    • Nancy puts stress into three categories - ones you can get rid of, ones that you can make better, ones that you are must deal with.
    • Heightened Cortisol levels puts us into Fight or Flight mode (ie running from a bear) and slows down the production of our sex hormones as well as slow systems like digestion - because if you are running for your life those become lower priority. Except that we aren’t in flight or flight anymore - we don’t run from bears - we are in what is called sit and stew.
    • The sex hormone test that Nancy does is called the Dutch test - it is a dried urine test. She suggests the COMPLETE which tests both Cortisol and the sex hormones. Can be given to both men and women.
    • Once you have a plan in place, it will take months to get things back into balance. It does not happen over night.
    • Always make sure to be in communication with your doctor so that he or she is aware of what you are doing.

Nancy is running her next Whole Food Nutrition Detox March 1 - 5th. You can find out more information about it on her website: https://renewnutritiononline.com/.
And if you would like to be in consideration for a FREE Dutch test and analysis, email Nancy at nancy.mcelwain@gmail.com . Make sure to tell her that you heard her on The New Old You.

The New Old You is a YEAR OLD! And I've brought back my very first guest, Betsy Green, to talk about all things 50+, updates on what has happened since last year, and what we look forward to this year.
We discuss all of the unknowns of Covid as we head into 2022 and beyond. How it affects our kids, how it affects us. We even touch on regrets and how since we don't know what is going to happen, that we need to get busy living now.
Betsy has a BIG year ahead with a house build and move, continuing on with her professional and personal freelance work, and her beautiful card-making. If you would like to see her cards, you can check her out on instagram http://www.instagram.com/betsy3spoke.
Thank all of you so much for making this first year as a podcaster and amazing experience. Whether or not I make it to next year, nothing can ever take away all of the things that I have learned about me and that I hope you have learned about you. I've said it before and I'll say it again, 50+ women are an amazing group of people. We are amazing, complex, and make everything in this world possible for everyone else. You are special. It's NEVER Too Late! What You Need To Know To Start And Build A Business After 50 With Business Coach Lindsay Pinchuk Jan 26, 2022
    Show notes

Lindsay Pinchuk was put on my path for a reason and I couldn't be happier. She is a master entrepreneur/founder that is here to give us the confidence to believe that even if we are over 50, it is never too late to start your own business.
    Takeaways:
    1. It is NEVER too late to make a change or to start a new business! It doesn’t matter how old you are.

    2. Look to fill a need or a void for your community or for a brand.

    3. Starting a successful business doesn’t happen overnight. You have to SHOW UP every day.

    4. The sooner you can put the wheels into motion on something you want to do, the better. Start while you still have financial security. Make a plan and be strategic. A lot of times you have big pieces in place for a new business before you even leave your old career.

    5. Do one thing a day to forward your business, your idea, your passion project, your side hustle.

    6. To get clarity ask yourself what do you love? what feels your bucket? Think about how you can build a business out of your passions?

    7. When starting a business, the first thing you want is to have a flexible blueprint. You need to be able to adapt if things don’t go right. Take inventory of what it’s going to take to build this business.

    8. Determine how you going to make money - what are your revenue streams going to be? And what you are operations going to look like?

    9. Work on branding, but don’t pour a lot of money into it. Pick a name and some colors. There are many free or close to free design apps and sites available online. Buy a domain.

    10. Talk to financial advisor or planner about legitimizing your business. When you start collecting money money it’s important that you are set up to pay taxes correctly.

    11. Build your community. You have your personal community of people you choose to be around - Then you have your business community that you trust with business questions and networking.

    12. You want a community over an audience. An audience receives only, but a community offers back and forth communication.

    13. With a legit community, your business becomes the center of the conversation.

    14. You have to show up as yourself and be totally authentic with your community. People will see right through you if you aren’t.

    15. Be supportive of other women in business. There is no reason to be jealous or stingy with information/resources, there is always ENOUGH to go around. And when you make other women around you successful, that success always comes back to you.
