FNBB 58 - Methinks Thou Doth Compliment Too Much Mar 25, 2022
    Show notes

Strange title I know, but this week's reading of the Friday Night BeerBlog is NOT about how we should accept compliments, but instead about what happens when the compliments go just a step too far and loose all their meaning. It's a slippery slope. Don't cross that line, cause it's ugly.

Your Over 50 Hair! Advice & Tips With LA Stylist Monica Williams Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode I am joined by LA Stylist Monica Williams who tells us how she got into the business, how her customers have become her family, her views on life after 50, and some really sage hair advice for women and their hair over 50.
    Some takeaways from today:

    1. Getting up and putting yourself together increases your confidence by 50%, which is a total made up number, but feels right. You are going to sit a little taller when you get up and show yourself some self-care.
    2. Peri-menopause hair can do the following: it can thin, your cowlicks can take over more because the density in the hair is less, our foreheads seem bigger because our temple hair can recede, the hair right above the ears tends not to grow, then grey hair starts with multiple textures,
    3. We need to decide between coloring and highlighting and drying and curling - maybe you’re doing to much to your hair.
    4. Get off of color. Think about just doing foils or lengthening time between visits, or even just color your hair less.
    5. It is not good to put tint, dye, or touchup spray on roots every day. Tint touch up powders plug up the roots of your hair and could literally be suffocating your hair.
    6. Clean your scalp properly. Everything you are doing is affecting the roots of your hair. Use a detox shampoo on your hair. It removes the residual hormones from your hair that land in the papillae of the hair.
    7. Wash, rinse, repeat. It’s on every bottle. The first time you wash its for your hair. The second time you wash is for your scalp.
    8. But don’t wash every day. And brush your hair! You have got to brush the temples of your hair. Get in there and brush and get all of those hormones out.
    9. Dry shampoo should be used only in a pinch - it is dry powder and will clog your pores. If you workout and feel you need to wash everyday - take some water and finger it through front area and crown of your head and then just re-blow dry those area.
    10. If you need a hair stylist, don’t be afraid to approach someone whose hair you like and ask who does theirs.
    11. Your hairdresser needs to be part of your “team” for when and if you begin to have scalp issues, which is very common. Having a professional actually saves you money because you go out and don’t know what to buy and end up spend a lot of money on beauty products you don’t need or aren’t good for your hair.

Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Sarcopenia, & Avoiding Injury As We Age With Dr. Stacie Grossfeld Mar 16, 2022
    Show notes

Today we are talking to Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Stacie Grossfeld about how to avoid injury, as well as all things Arthritis, Osteoporosis, and Sarcopenia as we age.
Moving into your midlife involves a lot of factors and that’s why it is so important to be educated to help you physically age gracefully. I know we all have a lot of plans on ways we want to spend this most valuable time. So get on it. Take control of your life and educate yourself and then help a friend do the same.
    Takeaways:
    1. As we age it takes a lot less trauma to injure ourselves. It’s important to maintain your activity levels, but choose your sports or activities more carefully.
    2. Your genetics play a big role in the strength of your cartilage and you can’t do anything about that. But what you can do is maintain a normal weight, do cardio exercise, include strength training, and incorporate a healthy diet.
    3. By age 40 you need to be doing some sort of resistance training to help maintain your muscle mass.
    4. Arthritis is the breakdown of cartilage at the ends of bones and once that process starts, you cannot reverse it. Motion and use of the joint is good for arthritic pain.
    5. Hip replacements have changed a lot over time. It is now an outpatient procedure done in 45 minutes and the surgeon goes through the front of the hip instead of the back.
    6. Knee replacements are different. 23% of people who have them aren’t happy. Results in the procedure vary so doctors try to keep patients out of surgery as long as possible.
    7. Bone health is primarily a female problem. We build bone to age 30 and then we start to lose it, but at a trickle. But when we hit menopause, it is a downward slide fast. You can lose 30% of your bone mass in 10 years.
    8. To prevent the bone loss add weight bearing activity such as walking and lifting weights. Put force on the bones. If you don’t, you could become osteoparatic.
    9. Once you hit menopause, you need a base-line bone density study.
    10. The recommendation for Vitamin D levels used to be 30, but now the academy is saying it should be over 80. As you grow older, after 70, it should be 100.
    11. Things for our daughters to do to make sure they keep their bone growth at a maximum before age 30 - Get enough vitamin D, make sure you are not a heavy smoker or alcoholic, limit the caffeine, eat a healthy diet, and do weigh bearing activity.
    12. Sarcopenia is loss of muscle as you age. As we age, we tend to lose lean muscle. Men and women lose muscle at same rate. By age 80, 20-50% of people have sarcopenia. They may have trouble getting out of chair or getting up and down.
    13. In your 70s - it’s important to do 40 minutes of some sort of cardio 3-4 times a week. Bump up your protein and you should have 1 to 1.5 gram of protein per kilogram per day.
    14. The core is the core thing you need to work on. We use our core for so many basic things, so you want to incorporate core exercise in for sure.
    15. Supplements to add: Vitamin D, Calcium, Vitamin C, Turmeric, Fish Oil, Glucosamine. Just try them for 3 months to see if they have an affect.

FNBB 56 - Yaass Queen, Own Your Femininity Like A Boss Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

I'm feeling pretty empowered after talking with founder of the Divine Living Brand and author of "The Audacity To Be Queen" this week. She really got me to thinking about what it means to be feminine and how the feminine instinct has been injured so long by the need of all women to express their masculinity to get ahead.
Mike had to STAND BACK this week in case I was going to blow estrogen all over him. It could have happened because "I am woman, hear me roar"....cue Helen Reddy.
We hope you have a wonderful week and find all kinds of ways to empower yourself.
Much love to all - and don't forget to RATE AND REVIEW - but only if it's good.

Feeling Broken In The Bedroom? What You Need To Know About Your Sexual Health After 50 With Dr. Kelly Casperson Mar 09, 2022
    Show notes

Dr. Kelly Casperson is here to talk all things sexual health after 50. And not only that, we're talking about the things we need to talk to our adult children about as they start their sexual lives.
    Takeaways from today:
    1. Basics: a. Menopause means it’s been one year and one day since your last period. b. The average age of menopause is around 51. and c. for ten years prior to menopause, women go through peri-menopause, where hormones are doing a reverse puberty.
    2. A lot of women stop or have pain during penetrative intercourse during this time due to a decrease in natural lubricant and collagen, but this can be easily treated.
    3. Even if you don't have menopause symptoms, if you are over the age of approximately 51, you have gone through it.
    4. The most sexually satisfied people aren’t young people, it is people in their 50s, 60s, 70s.
    5. Great sex is not a passive thing. It’s an active process, just like someone that is physically fit. It has to be prioritized.
    6. Use of lube increases your success of orgasm by 70-80%. Silicone based lube is best because you don’t absorb it like you do the water based.
    7. There is no “how long” should I use Vaginal Estrogen cream. The use of it is like using sunscreen or wearing a seat belt.
    8. You don’t need a “sex drive”. We do things because they are awesome. If you aren’t having awesome sex, don’t wonder why you don’t desire it.
    9. We feel entitled to a spontaneous sex drive that has been sold to us by media. And when we don’t achieve that, we end up feeling broken.
    10. Putting something in the vagina only leads to female orgasm 30% of the time so special focus need to be paid to the female body. Your largest sex organ is your brain.
    11. Don’t sit passively by waiting for spontaneous desire to happen. Get dressed up and go to the party even if you don’t think you want to. Chances are you’ll have a good time once you get there.
    12. Control of stress and cortisol levels in our bodies will help us desire more intimacy.
    13. If there is a desire mis-match in your relationship, normalize it by talking about it.
    14. Communication with our partner about menopausal symptoms and what we are going through is important to our relationship.
    15. Get educated on hormone replacement therapy as an option. When women start thinking about how they want to live as they get older and get educated, then they see how beneficial HRT could be for them.
    16. Women between the age of 50-60 that are on hormone therapy live 3-4 years longer than women in the same age group not on hormone therapy.
    17. For our young adult children that are starting their own sexual lives, the biggest thing they need to know from the start is about consent.
    18. They need to be aware of is orgasmic equality.
    19. We have to educate our girls that pleasure is for everybody.
    20. The personal growth that you do in figuring out what feels good is the best personal development you can do.

    FNBB 55 - Enjoy The Endgame, Don't Dread It Mar 04, 2022
    Show notes

It's a somber FNBB as we are toasting the life of Tedi Ellen Vaughan, Mike's mom. She passed away from liver cancer on Monday morning. She LOVED the Friday Night BeerBlog and so we persist and dedicate this week's recording to her and her memory.
Life is good everyone - DO NOT wait for the AFTER - Live now. Love now. Spend now. Dont' wait - Time is the our precious commodity and once it's gone, it's gone.
I wrote this blog while I was at the bedside of Tedi, watching her taking some of her last breaths. She is here with me - she believed in me, and so I will strive to continue to make her proud.
She was a wonderful woman and I will miss her so much.
    Best to all of you.

Kids Gone And House Feeling Empty? Ways To Turn Your Empty Nest Into A Happy Nest With Empowered Living Coach Allie Hill Mar 02, 2022
    Show notes

We prepare our children for years to finish strong and be read to leave the nest. But sometimes we forget to prepare ourselves and end up dealing with a lot of feelings of sadness and loss.
Allie Hill from Allie Hill Coaching is here to let you know you aren't alone and that there are some great ways to deal with the feelings you are having.
    Takeaways:

    • Remember that it is possible for you as the mom to overdo all of the lasts and stress out your child and take the joy of the next step for them.
    • It’s important to process your emotions, but do it away from your child.
    • Therapy can be helpful. Make sure to start early to get some traction before your child leaves.
    • The biggest myth is that the empty nest is going to be bad, sad, or EMPTY. Know that you have the opportunity to create the next best chapter of you life because you have your time back.
    • “Dream and Scheme” to get back in touch with things that once lit you up. Reconnect with your younger self and allow yourself to get excited.
    • When your child leaves, let them take the lead on how often they want to communicate with you. Have a conversation with them on expectations and boundaries.
    • Remember that them leaving home was the goal all along. You’ve done your job. Take a pause.
    • In your happy nest, start your day with a great morning routine that makes you feel really good.
    • Connect with other people. Don’t shut yourself off. Get up and out of the house.
    • Be willing to get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. We encourage our kids to do this, so we need to be willing to do it ourselves.
    • Remember when they come home for holidays, they aren’t coming home just to see you.
    • Be present with them while they are home. Don’t ruin the time by thinking about when they are leaving.
    • If you are struggling, have a conversation with your partner and let them know what you are experiencing, whatever emotions you are having. And then listen to them too. Then work as a team to create some joy and excitement of shared plans.
