Ways To Embrace Your Empty Nest With Empowered Living Coach Allie Hill | Back to School & Off To College Series FINALE Aug 31, 2022
    Show notes

Empty Nest coach Allie Hill is back to shower us with love and best tips, strategies, and advice on how to survive an empty nest. 20 million kids are headed to college, which means 20-40 million parents on their own solo journey to deal with an empty nest. It's important to remember that you are not alone on this road, but that there is good support and excellent steps you can take to make it a smoother transition for yourself.
Make your empty nest a happy nest!
Here are a few of the takeaways from today, but a complete list will be available in my newsletter next week and you can find the link to sign up for that here:
    https://www.subscribepage.com/the-new-old-you-newsletter
    TAKEAWAYS:
    1. There are 20 million kids headed back to college this year, so double that number of parents navigating the empty nest journey. Know you are in good company. Navigating an empty nest is a solo journey that many of us take at the same time.

    2. Doing mindset work is important. Take that focus that has been devoted to your kids and shift to yourself, your relationship, your friendships and think about what is going to make you feel more whole now that your kids are gone.

    3. Try to have a plan in place in advance. Not a giant P plan, but a simple plan that is actionable. Like setting up a morning routine. Have something consistent that you will do everyday. Whatever works for you. Your brain needs certainty and consistency during this time.

    4. Think about the feelings of your younger children when your older ones start leaving for school. They are used to having their sibling around and this is a big change for them, too. Encourage your college age kids to call home to talk to their younger brothers and sisters to assure them that they are still part of their life.

    5. The best gift you can give your child when they go to college is take care of yourself. They want to know you are happy. Even if you aren’t, you can’t lay that on them when they are learning to navigate their new life.

I've Been In A Barbra Streisand Kind Of Mood | FNBB 79 Aug 19, 2022
    Show notes

Are you like me and listen to music all day? Like ALL DAY? And do you have certain music you listen to at certain times and for certain tasks? No? Well I do.
Lately, my work "theme music" has been tunes from the Barbra Streisand channel on Pandora. This music has soothed my ears while my other senses and mind have been jamming out some serious work.
All Hail Babs! It seems like a strange subject to be writing about, but with "The Way We Were" playing in my headphones daily, it's hard to concentrate on anything else, including another topic to blog about.
Check in next week and see if I'm still in a Barbra Streisand state of mind.
Cheers all - have an amazing week.

    Show notes

In this next installment of our Back To School & Off To College Series, Moira McCullough from College Scoops is here to discuss preparing for the college search, the importance of that preparation, and how it can make college visits rewarding and informational instead of fear, confusion, and dread filled.
It is important to be well-armed to make informed decisions through the college journey and Moira and College Scoops are working hard to make sure that all of your pain point questions and concerns are addressed before you invest in an on-campus visit.

    1. College is so expensive and such an investment these days that it is important to support your kids to get the best possible information that they need in a college search.
    2. Planning and then taking college trips and making college visits is a perfect way to spend time with your kid with a total focus on them. It is a great way to get to know them a little better at this age. You will learn things about them you never knew.
    3. College visits are the aspect of the college journey that you have control of. You can put yourself in the drivers seat. It’s important to remember that YOU are the customer of the college
    4. The interactive videos available on College Scoops are very different from the videos provided by colleges on their website. These videos answer the pain point questions of students and parents as they prepare to visit a specific school
    5. You should start looking at local college first. Just start exploring your local area schools.

    My Friends Are Turning 60. It's Inconceivable! | FNBB 78 Aug 12, 2022
    Show notes

SKEEET!! My friends are steadily turning 60 right before my eyes. What the actual hell is going on. When my mom turned 60, that meant that she was old. And now my friends are turning 60. Does they mean they are old and am I almost there myself.
Hell no. 60 isn't what it used to be. It's young, even if our backs, diabetes, arthritis, hearts, and prostates don't agree all the time.
Anyway, I'm ruminating on what my friends turning 60 means to me. And you should read or listen because you've got nothing but time. Right?

What is The Reward For "Going It Alone" Besides Loneliness? How To Ask When You Need It | FNBB 77 Aug 05, 2022
    Show notes

It's deep. Yessir. But my brain wouldn't let me write about anything else this week.
Bottom line - there are lots of reasons why we don't ask for help when we need it. There are even lots of things that could happen if we don't ask for help. But there's only one way to ask for the help and it goes like this...
    "Can you help me?"
You think it's better to go it alone? Trust me, there are NO awards or rewards for doing things all by yourself.
Link in the bio. I promise to be lighter handed next week. I think. I hope.

Using These Four Questions To Prevent Teen Suicide | Jackie Simmons, Author | Back To School & Off To College Series Aug 03, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to the first in our series on "Back to School & Off to College".
Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24 in the U.S. and Nearly 20% of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide and 9% have made an attempt to take their lives.
My guest today, author Jackie Simmons, and her daughters are working to change those numbers. Through founding the Teen Suicide Prevention Society, they are working to educate parents to have"The Suicide Talk" with their teens and young adults regardless of whether or not they see signs of struggle.
In this episode Jackie takes us through this talk, the importance of it, and how it can possibly save your teen or young adult's life. She is showing us how normalizing talk around suicide is the only way to pre-empt it.
    In this episode we discuss:

    1. Why the "suicide talk" is so important.
    2. What it looks like and how it works.
    3. How many numbers of people are affected from one suicide or attempted suicide.
    4. Why pre-empting suicide with open dialogue is so important.
    5. How parents "miss" the signs of their children's struggle.
    6. The best prevention tool.
    7. How to suicide proof.
    8. How the talk and language around suicide is being normalized and why it's a good thing.
    9. Who is at risk of suicide?
    10. Knowing the best time to have the suicide talk.

I hope that you will search out Jackie at the free tools she has available. You can find them at
    Teen Suicide Prevention Society: https://teensuicidepreventionsociety.com/
