    Recovery Rocks

Ever wonder what it’s like to go on your first sober date? Or survive a wedding without liquid courage? How about dancing stone-cold sober or dealing with your first breakup without wine?

If so, you’re in luck because you can join bestselling authors and longtime sober friends Lisa Smith and Anna David as they talk to guests—and each other—about addiction and recovery, including all the “firsts” that come with sober living. From awkward to amazing, cringe-worthy to surprisingly poignant, they’re discussing what it’s like to experience life without substances.

Lisa is the author of the award-winning memoir Girl Walks Out of a Bar, while Anna wrote Party Girl, a comic novel about addiction and recovery in the vein of Rachel’s Holiday and Postcards From the Edge. Together, they explore the real-life moments behind the kinds of stories that shape how people understand recovery.

Whether you’re newly sober, sober-curious or just want to hear some honest stories about recovery, Recovery Rocks is here for all of it.

Because as it turns out, when you can remember everything that happened, life gets a lot more interesting.

New episodes weekly. Real stories, real recovery, real talk.

    Show notes

Tawny and Lisa talk about “glimmers,” mini-moments of calm and even joy. Glimmers are the opposite of triggers. They create a subtle, but meaningful mood shift. Think of how you feel when you pet a dog or hear a song you love. They also talk about “golden shadows,” which, similar to glimmers, are small bright spots that break through when doing difficult shadow work.

Like everything in recovery, it’s a process that doesn’t happen overnight, but is created and adjusted over time.

Episode 213: Episode 213: Boundaries, Codependency and Energy Vampires Feb 29, 2024
    Show notes

Tawny and Lisa talk codependency, something many folks in recovery grapple with. Melody Beattie, author of Codependent No More, defines codependency as, “The concept of losing one’s self while taking care of another.” Anticipating other people’s needs all the time leads to anxiety, projection, and manipulation. The answer is to stop trying to control others, set firm boundaries, and figure out how to handle people who sap your energy and pull you into chaos.

    Show notes

Tawny and Lisa talk to Jolene Park, founder of Healthy Discoveries. Jolene is a functional nutritionist and a pioneer in the area of “gray area drinking,” the kind where there’s no rock bottom, but where one drinks to manage anxiety and later regrets how often or how much they drink. They talk about Jolene’s recent Substack piece on the online sober community and how it’s changed over time, including the problems with over commercialization and misrepresentations.

    Show notes

Now that Dry January is in the rearview mirror, what comes next? Tawny and Lisa discuss how taking a break from booze gives us an opportunity to be intentional and consider what a dry or damp month can provide. Maybe it helped to identify triggers and stressors – including people – and how you might handle them without alcohol going forward. Maybe you picked up some new habits and friends you’d like to keep up with. Who and what made you feel good and provided support during this month? The biggest takeaway is to give yourself grace. Whether or not you hit your Dry January “goals,” you decided to go for a reset. That’s a big deal!
