    Recovery Rocks

Ever wonder what it’s like to go on your first sober date? Or survive a wedding without liquid courage? How about dancing stone-cold sober or dealing with your first breakup without wine?

If so, you’re in luck because you can join bestselling authors and longtime sober friends Lisa Smith and Anna David as they talk to guests—and each other—about addiction and recovery, including all the “firsts” that come with sober living. From awkward to amazing, cringe-worthy to surprisingly poignant, they’re discussing what it’s like to experience life without substances.

Lisa is the author of the award-winning memoir Girl Walks Out of a Bar, while Anna wrote Party Girl, a comic novel about addiction and recovery in the vein of Rachel’s Holiday and Postcards From the Edge. Together, they explore the real-life moments behind the kinds of stories that shape how people understand recovery.

Whether you’re newly sober, sober-curious or just want to hear some honest stories about recovery, Recovery Rocks is here for all of it.

Because as it turns out, when you can remember everything that happened, life gets a lot more interesting.

New episodes weekly. Real stories, real recovery, real talk.

    Show notes

Open Instagram, Ruin Your Night? We love to hate social media. But it’s also a singular tool for staying in touch, getting the word out on things we care about, and even learning a thing or two. We talk about our early days on the socials and how we use it now. Sober tools can help – just like with a drink, before opening that app, maybe ask yourself why you want to log on and play the tape through on where it might lead. Check out all things Lisa and all things Anna.

Some people love sober anniversaries, some people dread them, and some people don’t keep up with them at all. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. We talk about what counting days and keeping time looks like for us. Anna never misses an opportunity to celebrate herself, from her first soberversary (a karaoke party in West LA!) to her upcoming 25th (a full on 90s party with food trucks and costumes). For Lisa, it’s changed multiple times over 21 years. Check out all things Lisa and all things Anna.

(REBROADCAST) Sober Firsts: Anxiety and Panic Attacks Sep 18, 2026
    Show notes

It’s bound to happen. At some point in our early or not-so-early sobriety, something is likely to trigger that overwhelming feeling of anxiety or even panic. Maybe it’s in a situation we’d drink our through or maybe it’s out of nowhere. For Lisa, it was the latter. For Anna, smoking cigarettes eased her newcomer sobriety—until she realized it was only exacerbating the issue. Check out all things Lisa and all things Anna.

When Your Higher Power Is a Mini-Dachshund with Natasha Ruby Sep 11, 2026
    Show notes

Plenty of people struggle with the Higher Power part of AA. Natasha Ruby had a particularly good reason: she’d already dismantled the entire religious framework she was raised in and wasn’t especially eager to replace it with another male authority figure.

    So she chose a mini-dachshund.

Before that came Mormonism, an eating disorder, alcoholism and a terrifying psychotic break that left Natasha unable to understand a New York subway map she’d used for years. She believed every conversation was prophecy, gave her phone to a stranger and told the hospital staff she was essentially Bradley Cooper in Limitless. The aftermath was darker: she returned to Utah, covered her windows with a felt blanket and drank in a locked closet because she believed her life was over.

    It wasn’t.

Nearly 10 years into sobriety, Natasha has turned 15 years of journals and voice recordings into the brilliantly titled memoir Latter Day Psychosis. She also found something she once believed she could only access while drinking: creativity. Now she makes art sober, which may be less cinematic than Bradley Cooper becoming superhuman but has worked out considerably better.

    In this episode:

    · Why leaving Mormonism made alcohol feel like freedom—very briefly

    · What Natasha remembers about losing touch with reality in New York City

    · Why AA offended her until the moment it saved her

    · How a mini-dachshund became a perfectly legitimate Higher Power

    · What she discovered inside 15 years of journals and recordings

    · Why publishing her memoir feels like a 12th step

Natasha celebrates 10 years sober on September 28. Latter Day Psychosis will be released November 17.

Why Sober People Are Still Hiding at Work with Laura Nelson Sep 04, 2026
    Show notes

If a quarter of the people at your conference don’t drink, greeting everyone with champagne is less “festive” than it is “we have made absolutely no effort to know our audience.”

Laura Nelson discovered this when she asked a room of 125 professional women how many were sober or sober-curious. About a quarter raised their hands—hesitantly, while looking around to see who might be watching. Laura, who had kept her own sobriety separate from her professional life, realized this was ridiculous. So she did what every reasonable person does after identifying a problem: started a company, wrote a book and put on a conference.

Lisa spoke at the first Amplify conference, where a sober crowd took over a hotel bar, had an apparently suspicious amount of fun and woke up feeling fine. Now Laura is bringing Amplify back for two days—and trying to convince event planners that one syrupy mocktail served in a child’s glass does not count as inclusivity.

    In this episode:

    · How Laura reacted when she was recognized from her sober TikTok

    · What happened when 25% of a room admitted they didn’t want the champagne being handed to them

    · Why your mocktail may actually be more insulting than having no mocktail

    · How Sober Life Rocks built the largest sobriety community on LinkedIn

    · Why Laura swore she’d never put on another conference—and is now planning one twice as long

Laura is the co-founder of Sober Life Rocks and the author of The Inclusive Event Planner: A Quick Start Guide to Sober-Friendly Conferences That Boost Attendance.

From MTV and an Orthodox Yeshiva to TV Writing and Sober Comedy with Laura House Aug 14, 2026
    Show notes

Comedian and TV writer Laura House has a gift for making you laugh while casually dismantling your entire worldview.

Laura joins Anna to talk about the winding road from stand-up comedy, MTV and teaching at an Orthodox yeshiva to finding sobriety after finally realizing she wasn't going to "grow out of" her drinking.

The conversation somehow covers drunk houseboats, food addiction, emotional sobriety, writing for Mom, losing more than 100 pounds and why recovery turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her.

Turns Out It’s Not Ideal to Write a Novel From a Bar Stool (Sober Firsts) Aug 07, 2026
    Show notes

For years, Anna was convinced she couldn't write without cocaine. Lisa was convinced she'd eventually write the Great American Novel from a bar stool. Neither plan worked out particularly well.

This week, they talk about what it's like to create without drugs or alcohol, the myths artists tell themselves about substances and creativity, and why sober writing is infinitely better—even if it feels terrifying at first.

There are stories about disastrous writing habits, terrible first drafts, writing classes, famous authors, the beeping computer that nearly drove Anna insane and the surprising realization that inspiration sticks around long after the drugs are gone.

Plus: a spirited debate about neighbors who only want to chat when you're already late.
