    Purchasing Truth

Truth in Politics. Is it even possible to discuss truth in a safe way in a polarized United States? It is hard to imagine a safe conversation with your friends, co-workers, and family discussing the nation’s biggest issues. What it would be like to listen to and watch political discussions without the current reactivity, meltdown, or withdrawal? By listening in on the Purchasing Truth podcast with host Bill Stierle and moderator Tom, you will experience a discussion on why the restoration of the conversation about truth with perspective leads to a productive conversation in a partisan nation. This podcast will address the use of language by our leaders and in the news that has been dividing us, distracting us, splitting us, and keeping us from the unity we desire. An image of Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving in a distant American past reflects an American ideal captured in the little girl’s face as she experiences family members leaning in for connection that welcomes and accepts diverse opinions. At that time, people held vibrant conversations that reinforced unity without the discourse breaking the family apart. Today, America is very different. Freedom of speech and the technology age has brought a diversity of expression and access to instant information. Regrettably, it has also allowed for the expansion and amplification of marginal versions of truth and unverified opinions. With so many voices pulling for our attention, how can we accurately assess the reality or danger of all the things we hear? This results in issues being used to create enemy images of each other and keep us in a state of disconnection that generates fear and anger. Each side is looking for a mistake or angle to exploit and sow dissent. Political truth is lost as identity politics and limited beliefs about party objectives are marginalized. Having safe conversations about our versions of truth has been lost. Truth is not absolute. It changes and evolves when we search for and learn new things. The good news is we can have a better, safer discussion about what’s leaning towards false, partial-truth, or a full version of the truth and develop the ability to separate them from each other. In a world where the media is controlling the narrative, it’s more important than ever to dissect the messages that are shoved in our faces on a daily basis. Together, Bill and Tom sift through the information and data that is available, providing clarity and guidance, and return to a place where honesty and integrity mean something. Bill Stierle is a thought leader in the integration of emotional intelligence and brain research. With over 27 years of speaking, training and executive consulting expertise, Bill’s content and contributions are being felt daily inside the world’s top business schools, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and government institutions. His extensive knowledge in communication and human development provides fresh insight on motivation, conflict reduction, professional productivity, organizational performance, and individual effectiveness. His thought-provoking, dynamic trainings provide content-rich, practical information that leaves a lasting impact on his audiences. Join Bill and Tom as they lead you to explore and engage truth in a different way. Discover language strategies, concepts, and skills that will move you closer to the truth as they tackle politics, leadership, health care, business, and many other areas that affect us all. Don’t just accept whatever information comes your way. Learn how to approach and process it from different angles and protect yourself against the truth being hijacked. In a world of uncertainty, massive cable, network, social media, and leadership propaganda, Purchasing Truth is a place where messages and motivations become clear. Make sure your truth can’t be purchased. Join us.

Truth and Beliefs about Debt: No, We're Not Going to be Enslaved by China Apr 20, 2021
    Show notes

There's a prevailing belief about debt that if you're steeped in it, it's a bad thing. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss how this belief may be true for personal debt, but that's not necessarily true for business debt and government debt. Businesses and governments often have to get into a lot of debt to get the economy running – producing businesses and creating jobs. Large companies like Amazon and Uber took on a tremendous amount of debt before they started hitting gold. In this episode, Bill and Tom discuss the different levels of debt, why we should know how the different levels of debt work differently, and how the rumor that we're going to be enslaved by the Chinese because of the national debt is nowhere based in truth.

The Infrastructure Bill Debate: How Should Infrastructure be Defined? Apr 16, 2021
    Show notes

The United States needs certain structures for it to run effectively, but it seems like the nation doesn’t necessarily agree on what constitutes infrastructure. For the Republicans, the proposed infrastructure bill is nothing but a government spending spree. For the Democrats, the bill is critical for facility buildup and also for job-creation. What we have as a result is a debate where one side is trying to limit the definition of infrastructure into a narrow category, while another side is trying to make it as inclusive as possible. Just how broad can we get when it comes to infrastructure? Which projects should be seen as essential if we are to consider future development? Listen in as Bill Stierle and Tom share their thoughts on this pressing issue.

    Show notes

The American Presidential press conference is one of the sought-out activities for the general public to observe because of its subtle surprises. In this episode, host Bill Stierle and co-host Tom provide a healthy discussion about potential questions and topics to president Biden. Join in the conversation - any topic and response is possible!

The Truth About Our Social Responsibility for the Environment Apr 06, 2021
    Show notes

We were all taught not to pollute our natural environment, however, as societies proceeded to grow and expand, we gradually slipped from our original promises to our surroundings. Letting our environmental responsibilities fall away has exacerbated the problem to the point that we are no longer in the prevention phase of our environmental obligations. In this discussion, Bill Stierle and Tom share their viewpoints about preserving the environment and recycling our trash. Many environmental rules have been implemented to lessen our "trashy" crisis, from offering recycling bins to taxing violators. Protecting our shared environment is not just an individual oath, and we need to address the current situation. Join the discussion and understand all of the aspects of what we can do to improve the environment and save what is left for future generations.

Facing Mistakes the Right Way Apr 02, 2021
    Show notes

Every action and every deed as a politician is etched into people's minds. Realism tells us that people will only recall the wrong and immoral parts of every situation, even when someone is still in the process of facing a mistake. Is there a conventional way to conveniently handle and own up to mistakes and issues? A wrong response in those situations could lead to poor impressions in the public's mind. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the path politicians might take to turn the tables in their tightest, most problematic situations. Join in the conversation to learn possible scenarios where an erratic and unintentional action leads to branching plots, and identify which response when facing a mistake could also be applied in current situations to lead to better potential outcomes.

How Our Leaders Shift Our Moral High Ground Mar 30, 2021
    Show notes

Society's overall moral high ground is like a goalpost that constantly moves from one place to another throughout the years. Without it firmly rooted to the ground, many situations we typically considered wrong or unacceptable in the past may become tolerable today. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the many possibilities of how such an ever-changing and evolving moral compass can shape – and divide – society and the nation, especially with political leaders actively contributing so much to these shifts. They further emphasize the challenges of this constant shifting by presenting the vast differences among how people approach and receive different public issues. Among the cases they present are the sexual allegations against Andrew Cuomo and Harvey Weinstein, Brian William's fabricated helicopter crash, and the flaws in President Trump's COVID-19 response.

When Only the Soundbite Matters Regardless of the Truth Mar 23, 2021
    Show notes

When only the soundbite matters, will America know what it actually stands for? The media so easily creates a soundbite from a sliver of truth and then spins a narrative it wants to promote, while the listeners choose which narrative best fits their biases. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom discuss how Ted Cruz misrepresented the American Rescue Plan, making an outrageous claim that millions of illegal immigrants will receive stimulus checks, which is largely untrue. You can easily observe how the media on both sides takes their desired soundbite and handles it from a position of outrage rather than from a position of observation and disseminating important, factual information to the public. Listen and become aware of the lying schemes that plague the American media today.

FOMO: Creating Conflict to Keep Loyalty Mar 17, 2021
    Show notes

Conflict creates tension. However, there’s a lot of money that can be made by offering something for sale, taking the opportunity to buy away, and then injecting the fear of missing out into a person so they buy. Although conflicts keep loyal followers close, when you’re buying and investing in an upset, there’s a big probability you won’t become a repeat buyer. In today’s show, Bill Stierle and Tom explore the relationship between conflict and loyalty and the role that accountability plays in all of these.

The Truth about American Capitalism: How the System Fails the People in Supply and Demand Crises Mar 09, 2021
    Show notes

Capitalism, done the American way, has a way of messing up with people when it comes to serious supply and demand situations. We have seen this unfold during the early days of the pandemic, when the government tried to structure its messaging in such a way that people wouldn’t panic-buy masks and short the supply, which was very much needed by health workers. We have seen it again more recently when Texas stores literally had their shelves emptied by weather-panicked citizens. These situations often put to question the American public’s conception of the relationship between capitalism and government regulation – a discussion that often devolves into a fruitless tug-of-war in the capitalist-socialist dichotomy. How will this dynamic play out during the current efforts at vaccine distribution? Bill Stierle and Tom see some parallels that are quite interesting to explore. Join them as they share their thoughts.
