    Purchasing Truth

Truth in Politics. Is it even possible to discuss truth in a safe way in a polarized United States? It is hard to imagine a safe conversation with your friends, co-workers, and family discussing the nation’s biggest issues. What it would be like to listen to and watch political discussions without the current reactivity, meltdown, or withdrawal? By listening in on the Purchasing Truth podcast with host Bill Stierle and moderator Tom, you will experience a discussion on why the restoration of the conversation about truth with perspective leads to a productive conversation in a partisan nation. This podcast will address the use of language by our leaders and in the news that has been dividing us, distracting us, splitting us, and keeping us from the unity we desire. An image of Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving in a distant American past reflects an American ideal captured in the little girl’s face as she experiences family members leaning in for connection that welcomes and accepts diverse opinions. At that time, people held vibrant conversations that reinforced unity without the discourse breaking the family apart. Today, America is very different. Freedom of speech and the technology age has brought a diversity of expression and access to instant information. Regrettably, it has also allowed for the expansion and amplification of marginal versions of truth and unverified opinions. With so many voices pulling for our attention, how can we accurately assess the reality or danger of all the things we hear? This results in issues being used to create enemy images of each other and keep us in a state of disconnection that generates fear and anger. Each side is looking for a mistake or angle to exploit and sow dissent. Political truth is lost as identity politics and limited beliefs about party objectives are marginalized. Having safe conversations about our versions of truth has been lost. Truth is not absolute. It changes and evolves when we search for and learn new things. The good news is we can have a better, safer discussion about what’s leaning towards false, partial-truth, or a full version of the truth and develop the ability to separate them from each other. In a world where the media is controlling the narrative, it’s more important than ever to dissect the messages that are shoved in our faces on a daily basis. Together, Bill and Tom sift through the information and data that is available, providing clarity and guidance, and return to a place where honesty and integrity mean something. Bill Stierle is a thought leader in the integration of emotional intelligence and brain research. With over 27 years of speaking, training and executive consulting expertise, Bill’s content and contributions are being felt daily inside the world’s top business schools, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and government institutions. His extensive knowledge in communication and human development provides fresh insight on motivation, conflict reduction, professional productivity, organizational performance, and individual effectiveness. His thought-provoking, dynamic trainings provide content-rich, practical information that leaves a lasting impact on his audiences. Join Bill and Tom as they lead you to explore and engage truth in a different way. Discover language strategies, concepts, and skills that will move you closer to the truth as they tackle politics, leadership, health care, business, and many other areas that affect us all. Don’t just accept whatever information comes your way. Learn how to approach and process it from different angles and protect yourself against the truth being hijacked. In a world of uncertainty, massive cable, network, social media, and leadership propaganda, Purchasing Truth is a place where messages and motivations become clear. Make sure your truth can’t be purchased. Join us.

Integrity And Accountability Under Attack – Do You Believe America Will Care About The Truth Again? Jun 08, 2021
    Show notes

Taking a close look at our government and politics can pull out a lot of dirt. With everything that’s happening in the country right now, do you believe that America will care about the truth again? Bill Stierle and Tom get into a hot discussion about the issues surrounding the country and how disconnected the government and businesses are from integrity and accountability. Both entities would rather protect their brand names and the institution, than to be held accountable for something they didn’t do correctly or well. Along with these different societal groups, Bill and Tom believe that we as a people are not learning from past issues and that people are often saying and doing things that are out of alignment with integrity. If all of this continues, what type of values do you think America is going to step into?

Why Our Emotional Reactions Can Be Problematic When It Comes to Dealing With The Rule Of Law Jun 01, 2021
    Show notes

How does a person’s emotional reactions relate to dealing with the rule of law? Bill Stierle and Tom discuss what happened in an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, talking about the incident involving a man who called 911 for assistance in a robbery taking place at his neighbor’s home. They highlight the impact of the man’s emotional reaction to the situation and the 911 operator’s lack of communication skills to deescalate the caller. The caller escalated emotionally and eventually shot and killed the robbers. Bill and Tom discuss this incident in relation to Stand-Your-Ground-Laws that brings perspective into play as to why these laws are problematic, especially in a society where there are so many injuries and deaths due to gun violence.

The Power of Belief Messages in America's Complicated Identity May 26, 2021
    Show notes

Everyone has their own versions of the truth because of the belief messages they have heard (or created) and accepted as truth. One topic will always be refuted by another because they either believe it so much or are aggressively against it. Sadly, the entire nation is saturated in this kind of messaging, and therefore putting America into further political imbalance. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss how belief messages play a significant role in the internal war happening within the Republican Party and its followers. They delve into the still-ongoing battle against the supposed election fraud and how this mindset is directly influenced by Donald Trump's political branding. Tucker Carlson and The Power of Controversy May 04, 2021

Why Videos Don’t Always Portray the Truth - The George Floyd Effect Apr 30, 2021
    Show notes

Just because something's on video doesn't mean it is the absolute truth. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the George Floyd incident and how different the outcome would have been if we didn’t have the video footage. In this video-based society we live in, we have different messages coming in from different directions. As a result, our perception and our perspective get skewed depending on the media we’re feeding on. What we need is to have awareness of how videos affect our society. With that in mind, we need to bring our best selves forward at all times.

Injecting Bias Into The Hailstone Principle Apr 27, 2021
    Show notes

The previous episode of "Purchasing Truth" taught us how something as small as a speck of dust can expand out of all proportion and become a big, powerful communication hailstone. This is especially true when it comes to the words we speak, particularly when they come from the mouths of influential people. As if things can't get even more out of hand, try injecting some bias into that messaging hailstone, and you'll see how great much trouble it can create. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom tackle the relationship between the hailstone principle and bias. They discuss it in relation to the Derek Chauvin Trial and the communication mess that happened after Representative Maxine Waters talked to reporters about the event. Learn the weight our words hold as they get passed on to others and then they inject their own meaning into them.

The Impact of the Hailstone Principle in Today's Society Apr 23, 2021
    Show notes

A few words in a catchphrase can gain weight if they are repeated over and over again, gaining momentum, and causing a huge impact once they hit the intended recipient. This hailstone principle is a popular strategy in marketing, allowing businesses to convey their message to the audience without the need for lengthy materials. However, it can be used beyond brand building into influencing population behaviors in other realms. Bill Stierle and Tom go deeply into how many politicians take advantage of the hailstone principle to solidify their movements, ideologies, and platforms. This strategy is evident in the still-roaring battle over claims of fraud in last year's presidential election. Bill and Tom discuss the hailstone principle's effect on government fundraising programs, immigration policies, and the way politicians create their own "branding.”
