    Purchasing Truth

Truth in Politics. Is it even possible to discuss truth in a safe way in a polarized United States? It is hard to imagine a safe conversation with your friends, co-workers, and family discussing the nation’s biggest issues. What it would be like to listen to and watch political discussions without the current reactivity, meltdown, or withdrawal? By listening in on the Purchasing Truth podcast with host Bill Stierle and moderator Tom, you will experience a discussion on why the restoration of the conversation about truth with perspective leads to a productive conversation in a partisan nation. This podcast will address the use of language by our leaders and in the news that has been dividing us, distracting us, splitting us, and keeping us from the unity we desire. An image of Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving in a distant American past reflects an American ideal captured in the little girl’s face as she experiences family members leaning in for connection that welcomes and accepts diverse opinions. At that time, people held vibrant conversations that reinforced unity without the discourse breaking the family apart. Today, America is very different. Freedom of speech and the technology age has brought a diversity of expression and access to instant information. Regrettably, it has also allowed for the expansion and amplification of marginal versions of truth and unverified opinions. With so many voices pulling for our attention, how can we accurately assess the reality or danger of all the things we hear? This results in issues being used to create enemy images of each other and keep us in a state of disconnection that generates fear and anger. Each side is looking for a mistake or angle to exploit and sow dissent. Political truth is lost as identity politics and limited beliefs about party objectives are marginalized. Having safe conversations about our versions of truth has been lost. Truth is not absolute. It changes and evolves when we search for and learn new things. The good news is we can have a better, safer discussion about what’s leaning towards false, partial-truth, or a full version of the truth and develop the ability to separate them from each other. In a world where the media is controlling the narrative, it’s more important than ever to dissect the messages that are shoved in our faces on a daily basis. Together, Bill and Tom sift through the information and data that is available, providing clarity and guidance, and return to a place where honesty and integrity mean something. Bill Stierle is a thought leader in the integration of emotional intelligence and brain research. With over 27 years of speaking, training and executive consulting expertise, Bill’s content and contributions are being felt daily inside the world’s top business schools, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and government institutions. His extensive knowledge in communication and human development provides fresh insight on motivation, conflict reduction, professional productivity, organizational performance, and individual effectiveness. His thought-provoking, dynamic trainings provide content-rich, practical information that leaves a lasting impact on his audiences. Join Bill and Tom as they lead you to explore and engage truth in a different way. Discover language strategies, concepts, and skills that will move you closer to the truth as they tackle politics, leadership, health care, business, and many other areas that affect us all. Don’t just accept whatever information comes your way. Learn how to approach and process it from different angles and protect yourself against the truth being hijacked. In a world of uncertainty, massive cable, network, social media, and leadership propaganda, Purchasing Truth is a place where messages and motivations become clear. Make sure your truth can’t be purchased. Join us.

The Impact of Spreading Misinformation on the COVID-19 Crisis Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

As the world enters the vaccination stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, it now faces a brand new battle: the fight against people spreading misinformation. With all the different beliefs surrounding the vaccine, many people's lives are put at stake. Instead of highlighting why this medical intervention must be prioritized, everything is focused on stirring outrage and sparking heated arguments. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss how some news networks and social media sites deliver partial truth just for the sake of boosting online engagement, even if it means messing with the facts. They also talk about why personal beliefs are so hard to influence or change depending on the people who influence them or the places they get their news from.

COVID Vaccine And The Flat Earth Mindset Aug 03, 2021
    Show notes

The facts are unequivocal. There is now enough data to suggest that vaccinated people tend NOT to get sick, be hospitalized, or die from COVID-19. But if you’ve been following Purchasing Truth for some time, you would know that there is almost nothing facts can do to change beliefs. Despite the overwhelming evidence we now have, millions of Americans still have that flat earth mindset around COVID and the vaccine. While many beliefs are harmless, this one is far from it. It has serious implications on the nation’s ability to fully recover from the pandemic. What will it take for people to move away from their flat earth mindset and objectively confront the truth? What sort of authority can sway them to abandon their misguided beliefs born out of doubt and skepticism? Bill Stierle and Tom discuss.

They tackle why difficult conversations are getting harder to have and what role social media has played in this dynamic. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom dive deep and share their thoughts on how major news outlets are doing their job in portraying the truth and its impact on citizens, especially voters. They highlight Jim Acosta's question to former President Donald Trump and discuss how language and wording affect how news is reported and received.

Objective Truth vs Subjective Truth Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Now, more than ever, in a political climate filled with so much division, it is crucial to have the ability to discern what is subjective and what is objective. Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the difference between subjective truth versus objective truth and offer examples in multiple contexts such as business and politics. As people consume more information from various sources, the lines get blurry, and belief often takes precedence over facts. That’s why it’s important to draw the line as you build your own perspective, political or otherwise.

A Seed of Doubt Can Purchase the Truth Jul 06, 2021
    Show notes

A seed of doubt can purchase the truth. In this episode, Bill Stierle and Tom discuss the right-wing website, Revolve, and how it implied that the FBI planned the January 6th attack. It planted skepticism by posing multiple questions to the readers. In doing so, it leads readers away from knowing whether the accusation is true or not and instead makes you focus on the hypothetical. Didn’t we see this in the early 2000s when the auto industry conspired to put out messaging that planted seeds of doubt into people's minds about electric vehicles, and they managed to kill the budding industry? Join in the conversation and be vigilant regarding doubt and skepticism.

Playing To The Crowd: Dissecting A Reporter's Fight Or Flight Situation Jun 30, 2021
    Show notes

When people get into a fight or flight situation, truth is sacrificed in favor of comfortable, yet false, positives. Bill Stierle and Tom dissect Gary Tuchman's conversation with Pennsylvania Republican State Sen. Doug Mastriano, focusing on the reporter's struggle to control the conversation. They discuss how people go to great lengths to challenge the truth just for the sake of getting one controversial soundbite. Emphasizing the power of compassion and empathy in public perception, they explain how these forces can be used to get out of a tight spot. Bill and Tom also detail how this particular scenario illustrates how the human mind's logical side completely shuts down when overridden by emotions and personal beliefs.
