44. Interview With The Vampire with special guest Darcy Miller Apr 17, 2020

Show notes

Our extra special, no holds barred, fight to the death, mega bracket of the Kirsten Dunst filmography has led us here! We watched Interview With The Vampire (1994) with special guest Darcy Miller and we want some more! This whacked out Grand Guignol masquerading as a parable for a gay family unit has everything - Tom Cruise mincing about in fine silks and brocades, Brad Pitt sleep walking his way through the script and an 11 year old Kiki Dunst holding her own against her two grown "fathers" spitting dialogue like she's in a gothic Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? If you like vampires that turn to dust in the sunlight rather than shine bright like a diamond then this movie is for you - Anne Rice likes her vampires old school and her gay allegories Flaming!

43. Soapdish with special guest Mark Rosenberg Apr 10, 2020

Show notes

They don't make Soap Operas like they used to, and they never quite made them like The Sun Also Sets. We welcome back to the pod soap-expert Mark Rosenberg to review the 1991 camp classic Soapdish. Sally Field is at her comedic best against comedy giants Whoopi Goldberg and Kevin Kline and there are major scene stealing moments from icons Carrie Fisher and Cathy Moriarty. The styling of this movie is so early 90's I can't handle it - Teri Hatcher's hair stylist deserves an Academy Award. We dish about classic soap storylines from the 80s and 90s, which networks were superior (CBS soaps are trash) and we all emphatically agree Kevin Kline can get it.

42. Bedknobs and Broomsticks with special guest Darren Elms Apr 03, 2020

Show notes

This era of social distancing would be the perfect time to begin a correspondence course in witchcraft! We watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks with friend of the pod Darren Elms and we Stan Angela Lansbury. It's WWII and Miss Price (Lansbury) gets saddled with some cockney waifs at her English countryside manor. There will be no bubble and squeak or toad in the hole for these kids - Miss Price only eats flowers and sticks apparently. We grant this movie the dubious honor of "Mary Poppins for kids who read books" and I'm still not sure if thats a read. Practicing witchcraft to support the war effort, putting a child in charge of the flying bed and riding around town on a motorbike with a sidecar are just some of the reasons Eglantine Price is a queer icon.

41. Hairspray with special guest Brian Boskind Mar 27, 2020

Show notes

I've been cooped up inside this house all day and my diet pill is wearing off. Not to worry, we're back with more social distancing distractions! We watched the John Waters classic Hairspray (1988) with MTMUG all star (and extra in the movie) Brian Boskind (not to worry, we recorded pre-quarantine rules in CA)! Brian fills us in on working with the legend himself John Waters, Debbie Harry oozing coolness in person and Colleen Fitzpatrick almost meeting an untimely end in a teeny tiny car. And we would all lose our gay cards completely if we didn't mention the amazing Divine as Edna Turnblad. Her performance, wardrobe and styling are worth the price of admission. If you haven't seen the movie they turned into a Broadway musical that they then turned into another movie - do yourself a favor and add it to your quarantine watch list.

40. Saved! with special guest Tyler Schuelke Mar 20, 2020

Show notes

She crashed her van into Jesus - she is NOT OK! We watched Saved! (2004) with special guest Tyler Scheulke and we're still speaking in tongues. This ahead of its time classic deals with issues like de-gayification camps, teen pregnancy and rigging the vote for prom queen. Is losing your virginity to your gay boyfriend to keep him straight the Christian thing to do? Can the bible be used as a weapon? Should Mandy Moore be held responsible for that haircut? We tackle the tough questions on this weeks episode of Movies That Made Us Gay!

39. Clueless with special guest Brad Liberti Mar 14, 2020

Show notes

We can't remember algebra but we can quote this entire movie start to finish. We watched Clueless (1995) with Brad Liberti and we're totally buggin! We take a deep dive into this quintessential 90's mega hit. Was the slang made up? Did real 90's kids dress like that? Is it weird that Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and Josh (Paul Rudd) end up together? The answer is WHO CARES! This movie is a perfect gem and no one can convince us otherwise. If you worshipped this movie as a kid, you're totally a disco-dancin', Oscar Wilde readin', Streisand ticket holdin' friend of Dorothy now.

38. Basic Instinct with special guest Chip Pope Mar 06, 2020

Show notes

Name a more iconic duo than Joe Eszterhas and Paul Verhoeven, we'll wait. We watched Basic Instinct (1992) with Chip Pope (It Happened In Hollywood Podcast) and we need a drink... hold the ice. The feminist masterminds who went on to bring us Showgirls (we'll get there) started with a little movie that gifted one Miss Sharon Stone upon the world. We talk 90's erotic thrillers, Michael Douglas' dubious sex appeal and Joe Eszterhas' ability to write dialogue that makes American actors sound like Eastern European ESL students. Honk if you miss gratuitous nudity in main stream American cinema! It's episode 38 of Movies That Made Us Gay.

Show notes

Get ready to talk about Truth, Beauty, Freedom and above all else Love because we watched Moulin Rouge! (2001) with Harper and Jonathan from Hawkeyes Podcast. We turn into hardcore theater geeks as we breakdown Satine's (Nicole Kidman) wig journey, Christian's (Ewan McGregor) vocal chops and Zidler's (Jim Broadbent) off his rocker performance. We relive our early obsession with this movie and which one of us had a Moulin Rouge/Limousine themed birthday party. The password is Spectacular, Spectacular! 36. Steel Magnolias with special guest Christian Turner and Allison Levitan Feb 21, 2020

Show notes

Season 2 is here and we brought out the big guns. The big, southern, sassy guns. We watched the super duper gay Steel Magnolias (1989) with special guests Christian Turner and MTMUG all-star Allison Levitan. If you're ready to listen to Pete quote this entire movie in a questionable southern accent you've come to the right place. Don't worry, we cover the most important aspects of this classic - the fashion, the hair and most importantly the diva speeches. Also butts, this movie has lots of butts. Drink you juice and let's get working on these nails - It's Season 2 of Movies That Made Us Gay!
