Movies That Made Us Gay

Latest Episodes:

64. Sunset Boulevard with special guest Dennis Griffin Sep 11, 2020

Show notes

"We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!" We watched Sunset Blvd (1950) with the very funny Dennis Griffin and we're ready for our close-up! This Uber-meta film about the film industry gave the world one of the most glamorous, tragic and straight up bananas performances of the 20th Century in Gloria Swanson's portrayal of Norma Desmond. William Holden is also giving us major beef-cake daddy vibes as Joe Gillis, the screenwriter turned gigolo who finds himself on the business end of Norma's amorous affections. If you're anything like us, after watching this movie you'll be perfecting your Norma Desmond impression while manufacturing a turban out of a tea towel and prancing around the house in your most glamorous caftan. Remember Norma's words well kids... "No one ever leaves a star. That's what makes one a star."

63. Sliding Doors with special guest Joshua Clement Sep 04, 2020

Show notes

The year was 1998 and GOOP was a mere glimmer in her eye. We watched Sliding Doors (1998) with returning favorite Joshua Clement and we're all booked for blonde highlights! This movie has everything: Gwyneth Paltrow accent work, a makeover with a sassy new 'do, and a charmingly befuddled Englishman. GP was in no less than 5 movies in '98 and this Sliding Doors holds up against some bangers. And yes, we do talk about Brad's matching haircut. It's episode 63 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

62. Twister with special guests Jessica Granger and Amy Fox Aug 28, 2020

Show notes

It's like Jurassic Park but with Tornadoes. We watched Twister (1996) with the awesome Jessica Granger and Amy Fox (ep 20 Never Been Kissed) and we always knew there was something about that Helen Hunt. Gay boys and girls across the land can all agree, Hunt as storm chaser Dr. Jo Harding definitely turned us gay. From her utilitarian wardrobe, to her trusty pickup (an '82 Jeep HONCHO?!) we always knew Jo was playing on our team. Whether or not the filmmakers knew they were creating a queer benchmark, Twister has gained a life of its own with gay people of a certain age. There may not be a tee shirt on the hallowed walls of Hot Topic, but this 90's gem shaped young queer minds everywhere.

61. Scream with special guest Tim Murdock Aug 21, 2020

Show notes

Do you like scary movies? We watched Scream (1996) with the always hilarious Tim Murdock (Happy Horror Time) and who says it has to be October to watch horror movies? The slasher that changed the genre forever, Scream embraced everything that was tired and cliche in horror and made it fresh for a new generation of horror fans... and gays everywhere rejoiced. Was quirky video store clerk Randy (Jamie Kennedy) a coded gay character? Were Billy (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu (Matthew Lillard) a little too "close" for comfort? Was Casey (Drew Barrymore) wearing a wig? The answers to all these and more, lie in Episode 61 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

60. 54 with special guest Blake Knight Aug 14, 2020

Show notes

93 minutes of late 90's Ryan Phillippe wearing dolphin shorts and tube socks... where do we sign up?! We watched 54 (1998) with friend of the pod Blake Knight (A Gay in the Life) and you're not listening to this episode with that shirt on. We take a deep dive into this semi-true story about the legendary 70's disco Studio 54. Did club owner Steve Rubell (Mike Meyers) really have a "no-uggos" rule at the door? Absolutely. Were the real bartenders as hot as Ryan? Maybe. Were Greg (Breckin Meyer) and Anita (Salma Hayek) terribly mismatched? Definitely. We also examine the fabled Directors Cut featuring the steamy Ryan/Breckin kiss left on the cutting room floor. Dust off your Donna Summer records and break out the amyl nitrate, we're about to turn the beat around! It's Episode 60 of Movies That Made Us Gay!!

59. Outrageous Fortune with special guest Greg Lightner Aug 07, 2020

Show notes

It's a buddy, caper, heist, road movie made for, you know... ladies. We watched Outrageous Fortune (1987) with our friend Greg Lightner and we agree - you boff Romeo over Hamlet any day. Bette Midler and Shelley Long play an Odd Couple at each other throats and apparently they kept it up behind the scenes as well. We talk about the drama behind who got top billing and who spilled tea on Oprah but lets face it - the real reason we watched this movie over and over again was to learn Bette's monologues. Calling actors "bulls*****rs who get paid" in a Brooklyn accent definitely made us gay. It's Episode 59 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

58. Sleepaway Camp with special guest Mike Toscano Jul 31, 2020

Show notes

This movie did for summer camps what Friday the 13th already did two years earlier. We watched Sleepaway Camp (1983) with the very funny Mike Toscano and we need an adult! What can we say? This movie is wild. The characters in this movie are so rotted you're actually rooting for the killer by the end. And oh, what an ending! Do yourself a favor and watch this movie. Oh... you wanted a twist? This one is gonna leave you gagged. It's episode 58 of Movies That Made Us Gay!!

57. The Lost Boys with special guest Billy Roach Jul 24, 2020

Show notes

My own brother a vampire… you wait until mom finds out! We watched The Lost Boys (1987) with one of our favorite straights Billy Roach. This movie is so 80's we can't stand it. From insane glam rock inspired fashion and hair to the absolutely slammin soundtrack - this movie is a time capsule of the hard rockin MTV 80's. It's also got so many cute boys in the cast we lost count. We get real deep into vampire lore and Pete and Billy nerd-out over a certain vamp themed table top role-playing game. Collectively we've seen this movie close to 100 times but we still have to keep telling ourselves… they're only noodles.

56. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark with special guest Ben Cheaves Jul 17, 2020

Show notes

She's not just a great set of boobs... she's also an incredible pair of legs. And when all is said and done, she only asks to be remembered by two simple words... any two as long as they're simple. We watched Elvira, Mistress of the Dark with friend of the show Ben Cheaves and you can call us... tonight. This movie has become a touchstone for gays across the land. We talk Elvira's ability to read you to filth at a moments notice, her agency in the face of adversity and her slammin bod. This movie, much like Elvira herself might be raunchy, bawdy and crass on the outside, but wholesome family fun underneath. You can give us your feedback in the comments, but if we wanted your opinion we'd beat it out of ya. It's Episode 56 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

55. Showgirls with special guest Dan Renzi Jul 10, 2020

Show notes

Somebody get me some brown rice, vegetables and a bottle of Evian! We watched Showgirls (1995) with special guest Dan Renzi (The Real World, The Challenge) and all we want is a burger, fries and a soda. People proclaim Showgirls to be the "best worst movie" but our friend Dan is here to tell you you're half wrong. We hash out why Showgirls is actually a solid piece of cinema in spite of and in some cases because of it's over the top acting, insane script and explicit nudity. Name another NC-17 movie with a wide release (or shall we say - big opening?). We talk the high points of Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley) and Cristal's (Gina Gershon) chemistry, the low points of Mama Bazoom's (Lin Tucci) weird dialogue and the pointless (Showgirls 2: Penny's from Heaven). We are unapologetic fans of this movie and it can only be summed up in the words of Nomi Malone herself: "It doesn't suck."
