54. Back To The Beach the "lost" episode on location from Palm Springs Jul 03, 2020

Show notes

It only took us a year but we finally got our act together. We started recording Back To The Beach (1987) on a lovely Palm Springs vacation when disaster stuck and half of the episode got lost in the mysterious "cloud." We dusted off this artifact from MTMUG past and shined it up like a new penny - for you! This beach movie throwback to the 60's by way of the 80's is so darn charming, funny and full of cute boys in wetsuits you'll be quoting it all summer. Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon are camp excellence, and there are more cameos than the Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special! Get ready to learn the Jamaica Ska cause it's episode 54 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

53. Encino Man with special guests Ashley and Handsome Joe from Keep It Weird Jun 26, 2020

Show notes

We're not saying we wouldn't immediately bathe and shave an un-frozen caveman we found in our backyard - but if the end result was anywhere near early-90's Brendan Fraser, break out the shears! We watched Encino Man (1992) with MTMUG All Star Ashley Casseday from Keep It Weird (with an extra special guest appearance by Handsome Joe) and we're all Crazy for Fra-zee! Much like gay icon Missy Misdemeanor Elliott (allegedly), our memories of this movie put their thing down flipped it and reversed it. Turns out we heart Pauly Shore and Sean Astin is totes the villain of this movie. Don't worry your little queer heads, Brendan is still and always will be an Angel-face dream boat. Robin Tunney (The Craft, Empire Records) plays an amazingly trashy character who is horny for homo (erectus, that is) and Ke Huy Quan turns up for a mini Goonies reunion! It's Episode 53 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

52. The Mummy (1999) Jun 19, 2020

Show notes

1999 churned out banger after banger and we're bringing you another entry. The winner of our Brendan Fraser lurv poll is The Mummy and we're diggin' this action comedy crowd pleaser. Beside's Brendan's dreamy face and bangin' bod, this movie has tons of gay touchstones. Rachel Weisz is serving face and Patricia Velasquez is snatching trophies in the body beautiful category. The trio of hunky American treasure hunters are the stuff of gay erotic fiction fantasy and there's more than one mincing, fussy, gay-coded British dude. It's Episode 52 of Movies That Made Us Gay!

51. The Witches of Eastwick with special guests Erika Villalba and Paul Caiola (That Aged Well) Jun 08, 2020

Show notes

Like when Charlies Angels went on the Love Boat - it's time for a Crossover!! We watched The Witches of Eastwick (1987) with Erika Villalba and Paul Caiola from That Aged Well and we agree on one thing - everyone needs to frolic through a mansion at least once in their life. We talk wigs, wardrobe and wicked witchery as we make our way through this George Miller directed 80's classic. Cher is turning lewks, Susan Sarandon is rocking magnificent flame-red curls and Michelle Pfeiffer can walk the Face category in any Ball and snatch a trophy even with the cold sore shes sporting here. We had NO Business watching this movie as kids but it made us the witchy gays we are today.

It's Episode 50 so we though long and hard about what movies really had a hand in making us gay - and this one really hit the mark. We watched Batman & Robin (1997) with special return Bat-Guest Dylan Hay-Chapman (Episode 13. Batman Forever). From Chris O'Donnell in the new and improved Nightwing suit to Uma Thurman serving up some Eleganza Extravaganza drag excellence, to Bruce and Dick trading barbs, this movie has all the ingredients to turn any kid into a card carrying Friend of Alfred.

Show notes

Suddenly Seymour, we're here to provide you some hot takes on Little Shop of Horrors with Mitch Ralston! We go somewhere that's green as we take a deep dive into the off-off Broadway origins of this mid-80's classic. Ellen Greene is an icon and Rick Moranis is mad 2020 as Audrey and Seymour. We spend the entire run of this episode screaming/singing the lyrics written by Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast). Do yourself a favor and find this movie - you'll thank us later.

48. Go with special guest Hiko Mitsuzuka May 15, 2020

Show notes

Our ever-growing list of 90's movies continues - we watched Go (1999) with #friendofthepod Hiko Mitsuzuka (Ep 15, Adventures in Babysitting) and we would like to talk to you about Confederated Products. This movie is quite possibly the personification of the 90's as a decade. An extended rave, a roundtable conversation about tantric sex and a soundtrack featuring banger after banger by the likes of Len, Natalie Imbruglia and Los Del Rio; if a kid asks what the 90s were like, just show them Go.

47. The Brady Bunch Movie May 08, 2020

Show notes

We're heading back to the 70's by way of the 90's and it's a Sunshine Day! We watched The Brady Bunch movie from 1995 and don't want to believe this movie is old enough to rent a car! We get real deep into our love for this iconic family in all their forms - from the original sitcom, to the Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Brady Brides, A Very Brady Christmas and beyond. It's clear that we are obsessed with all things Brady and this movie is a shining example of why. We still want to be Marcia but we know in we'll always be the Jan.

46. Poison Ivy with special guest Michael Morgan May 01, 2020

Show notes

The 90's was a wild time - when movies could get away with a teen character played by an actual 17 year old, who bones down with her best friends dad. We watched Poison Ivy (1992) with 3 time MTMUG guest Michael Morgan and we are still clutching our pearls. Our forever homegirl Drew Barrymore plays the mysterious nympho Ivy to Sara Gilbert's mousy Sylvie. These two misunderstood teens from opposite ends of the tracks become instant best friends with dangerous consequences! Cheryl Ladd and Tom Skerritt play Sylvie's tragic/trashy parents respectively, who take an unhealthy liking to Ivy. Suggestive attire, inappropriate conversations and questionable tattoos abound in this erotic psychological thriller - featuring a girl on girl kiss between to teens!!! Where is Anita Bryant when we need her?

45. Single White Female with special guest Jose Galvez Apr 24, 2020

Show notes

If our roommate in a Manhattan pre-war rent controlled apartment tried to kick us out we can't promise we wouldn't go a little crazy ourselves. We watched Single White Female (1992) with friend of the pod Jose Galvez (Very Special Television) and we're all considering changing our name to Hedra. This early 90's noir tackles the real problems of being a single gal in the city - sexism at work, adulterous boyfriends and creepy obsessive puppy kicking roommates who practice casual at-home nudity and attempt to take over your life. This movie is hagsploitation at its finest and the screenplay by Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex, Happy Endings) has enough gay touchstones (Wigs! Male nudity! Stiletto's as weapons!) to make John Waters proud.
