Movies That Made Us Gay

Latest Episodes:

84. The Matrix with special guest Drew Stanley Jan 29, 2021

Show notes

It's the movie that changed the landscape for every sci-fi movie to come after... and launched a thousand parodies. We watched The Matrix (1999) with our friend Drew Stanley and we would definitely take the red pill. Perhaps it went over our heads at the time, but this Cyber Punk, Kung Fu, Industrial-Goth fairy tale is so jam packed with queer and trans theory it will make your teeny tiny little sunglasses spin. Considering how dated a movie about "hackers" could be, The Matrix has stood the test of time. Break out your vinyl pants and platform work boots, we're plugging in.

83. The Cell with special guest Ashley Casseday Jan 22, 2021

Show notes

It's like Silence of the Lambs for people who really love The Matrix. We watched The Cell (2000) with special guest Ashley Casseday (Keep It Weird Podcast) and we're still kinda creeped out. Jennifer Lopez plays the most glamorous social worker on earth who uses cutting edge technology and fashion to go into the minds of her subjects. If the dreamscapes look familiar its because director Tarsem Singh cut his teeth directing spooky ooky kooky videos for the likes of R.E.M. and most recently "911" for Lady Gaga. If you love FBI procedurals, dramatic Vince Vaughn and JLo wearing couture then this movie is for you.

82. Marie Antoinette Jan 15, 2021

Show notes

It's not too much is it? We watched Marie Antoinette (2006) directed by Sofia Coppola and your shoes are SO Du Barry! This modern take on the life of the last queen of France divided audiences at the time with its new wave soundtrack and American girl-next-door star but we are here to tell you - like Kirsten Dunst herself, this movie has aged beautifully. We are Sofia Coppola Stans and we spend much of the episode praising her dreamy directing, Kiki's impressive range (aging from 14 to 37!) and gagging over the locations, costumes, shoes... and the WIGS! What would you have done if you became queen of France at 19? Throw a damn party that's what! Was she irresponsible? Maybe. Are we living for her sense of style? Definitely.

81. Ruthless People with special guest Ben Cheaves Jan 08, 2021

Show notes

My husband worships the ground I walk on! We watched Ruthless People (1986) with our friend Ben Cheaves (TCM Underground presents: Slumberground) and we've been kidnapped by Kmart! In case you were wondering this podcast is slowly turning into a Better Midler catalog review and we're loving every minute of it. Directed by Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker (Airplane, Top Secret) Midler plays spoiled, loud and tacky like no other. The cast is lousy with MTMUG All Stars: Danny DeVito (Batman Returns), Helen Slater (Supergirl), Anita Morris (A Smokey Mountain Christmas). Not to mention cute as hell Judge Reinhold and Bill Pullman (trust us). We had NO business watching this movie as kids, but Bette taught us how to take care of ourselves in a crisis situation.

80. The Poseidon Adventure with special guest Jackie Beat Jan 01, 2021

Show notes

There's got to be a morning after! We watched The Poseidon Adventure (1972) with the Legendary Miss Jackie Beat and in the water we're very skinny ladies. The 70's were all about Disaster Movies and this one takes the cake. Filled with 70's fashions, over the top acting from some Hollywood legends and a hit song, this movie is a template producers follow to this day. The Morning After walked so My Heart Will Go On could FLY! Where else but a 70's melodrama could a reverend, a former sex worker and a Jewish grandmother/swim champion team up to save the day... and our hearts?

79. Batman Returns with special guest Dylan Hay-Chapman Dec 25, 2020

Show notes

Honey, I'm home... oh that's right, I'm not married. We watched Batman Returns (1992) with our resident bat-guest Dylan Hay-Chapman and suddenly we feel so much yummier. Before Robin was around to spark a sexual awakening, there was Selena Kyle AKA Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) to awaken our inner villainess. Clearly the star of this movie - the vacuum sealed (literally) costume, the beat mug and the one-liners made every gay boy (and girl) across the land want to be Catwoman when they grew up. The snappy script by Daniel Waters (Heathers) is pure camp; Danny DeVito's gross Penguin is all puns and Michael Keaton's Batman/Bruce Wayne is the ditzy girlfriend. And in case you were wondering - this is 100% a Christmas Movie.

78. Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special with special guest Jared Anderson Dec 18, 2020

Show notes

It's Christmas in the Playhouse and we're gonna have a lot of fun! We watched Christmas at Pee-wee's Playhouse (1988) with our friend Jared Anderson and we've gotta call you back - we've got Dinah Shore on the other line! This special episode of the Playhouse is filled with more queer and camp icons than John Waters' address book. Cher, Charo, Grace Jones, k.d. lang, Little Richard and more are all here in their 80's glam prime and we're still blinded by the sequins. The jokes are still fresh, the Spencer's Gifts aesthetic is on and popping and the soundtrack SLAPS. Come for 80's nostalgia, stay for Pee-wee pioneering Holiday Zoom calls with out of town loved ones.

77. Heathers with special guest Goldyn Gunville Dec 11, 2020

Show notes

Whats your damage Heather?!! We watched Heathers (1989) with our friend Goldyn Gunville and our teen-angst BS has a body count! We learned everything we needed to know about high school life from this movie. Didn't everyone wear structured blazers to class, write in their diary in oversized flowery scrawl while wearing a monocle and play croquet over a plate of pâté? The heightened reality of this movie is off the charts and the made-up teen speak and killer wardrobe are legendary ("it'll be very"). Winona Ryder and Christian Slater are *chefs kiss* as our new wave anti-heroes. The subject matter is dark - but it's a cautionary tale for the '80s. In the immortal words of our favorite fictional new wave band Big Fun: Teenage Suicide - Don't Do It!

76. Titanic with special guest Jennifer Mrazek Dec 04, 2020

Show notes

We have achieved Leo Mania. Officially! We watched Titanic (1997) with our friend Jennifer Mrazek and we promise to never let go! Do you remember where you were when you first saw Titanic? We do - all 15 times between us. We reminisce about this James Cameron directed classic that united the world. Sold out lines around the block, a theme song (and video) that still holds up - even an Oprah special! Titanic was THE movie of 1997 and Leo may have hooked these queers into the theater but the costumes, the wigs and our Queen Kate Winslet made us forever Stans. You can be blasé about something Rose, but NOT about Titanic!

75. Addams Family Values with special guest Andy Ur Nov 27, 2020

Show notes

Break out your "Schizos and Serial Killers" trading cards, we watched Addams Family Values (1993) with our friend Andy Ur and we're all Graceful, Delicate Ballerinas! As Thanksgiving movies go, this is… really the only one we could think of. This movie is full of more queer subtext than you can shake a stick at. Joan Cusack as murderous "Black Widow" Debbie Jellinsky is nothing short of iconic. Anjelica Huston is service face, face, body, face in Morticia drag and Christina Ricci very nearly steals the show as a pre-teen Wednesday revolting against her WASPy fellow campers. Keep an eye out for cameos by queer or queer-adjacent celebs like Christine Baranski, Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Cynthia Nixon and Charles Busch. Hey its Thanksgiving Day! Eat us, we make a nice buffet!
