Did you know that getting enough high-quality sleep helps women balance their hormones, and it’s a huge part of erasing period problems? It's true! But so many women are not getting the sleep they need. Sleep deprivation is tragically common in the United States. One in three people in the United States do not get enough sleep on a regular basis, according to the CDC, and many women with hormone imbalances encounter extra obstacles when it comes to healthy sleep.
On todays episode Cody does a deep dive on the four hormone-related causes of insomnia, and how to put insomnia to bed for good and how to get more high-quality sleep.

If you’ve tried different fitness routines to help solve your period problems, you know on some level that they don’t work for women. Maybe you made progress for a while, but then it stalled. Maybe you never made progress or, worse, your symptoms got more severe when you started a new health and fitness routine. This is all too common for too many women. I’ve worked with so many women who started a new health protocol—like eating Paleo and doing short, intense workouts—and seen their symptoms get worse actually get worse.

Why do most fitness routines fail women? Why do many exercise protocols make a woman’s period symptoms worse? Tune into to today's episode and join Jess and Cody to learn about how to lose weight and gain muscle more easily and sustainably, as well as how to prevent injury by varying your movement consistently according to your monthly cycle. When you sync your exercise with your cycle, you can experience incredible and lasting results.

    Show notes

Do you ever feel that even despite drinking what seems like a substantial amount of water, you still feel thirsty and dehydrated? This is a fairly common occurrence and can happen for a few reasons: there’s a chance you aren’t actually drinking enough hydrating water to meet your body’s needs, you might have an electrolyte imbalance, or maybe something else is happening internally.
On this episode we are going to talk today about everything you need to know about how to really hydrate. Hint: plain water isn't the most hydrating fluid! What? We know, shocking! Cody goes into a deep dive with us on why this is and what we should be drinking to hydrate.
Introducing Herhydration! Herhydration contains perfectly balanced electrolytes for hydration from green coconut water which is full of natural potassium, calcium, magnesium, antioxidants and amino acids, it has 2 grams of complex carbohydrates, aka fiber (rather than simple sugars), it is naturally flavored and colored by organic fruit and stevia (kiss harmful colored dyes and artificial sweeteners goodbye), is free of preservatives, and is gluten-free, it’s made with only all-natural ingredients, so it’s a perfect choice for those looking for electrolytes for hydration and healing.

Our mitochondria really gets hit hard when we have too big of a toxic load. We truly believe that your morning routine sets the tone for the whole day. But did you know that your morning routine can also help you boost your metabolism and get rid of that stubborn weight just based on what you are putting in your body?
On today's episode, Jess and Cody share some of the own routines, and Cody shares how having a solid morning routine helps women focus on adding foods that make them feel better instead of playing into the diet culture mindset of restriction. When you have a metabolism-boosting morning routine, you will see slimming in your belly and the numbers on the scale dropping no matter if you are in perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause.

    97. The Good, The Bad and the Sunny: Let’s Get Real About Sun Exposure Jun 29, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

We’re used to hearing about how too much of the sun’s warm rays can be harmful to our skin. But did you know the right balance can have lots of mood-lifting benefits as well as hormone health benefits?

Sunlight and darkness trigger the release of hormones in your brain. Exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused. At night, darker lighting triggers the brain to make another hormone called melatonin. This hormone is responsible for helping you sleep.

Without enough sun exposure, your serotonin levels can dip. Low levels of serotonin are associated with a higher risk of major depression with seasonal pattern (formerly known as seasonal affective disorder or SAD). This is a form of depression triggered by the changing seasons and lack of sun exposure.

A mood boost isn’t the only reason to get increased amounts of sunlight. There are several health benefits associated with catching moderate amounts of rays. Listen in to todays episode to learn more!

    95. The Gut-Hormone Connection Jun 15, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

If you pay attention to the health headlines, you’ve probably heard about the gut microbiome, or the collection of good and bad bugs that live in the GI tract and have an outsized influence on health.

But here’s something you might not know: the gut microbiome has a direct and powerful effect on hormones. A group of bacteria in the gut known as the estrobolome metabolizes and eliminates estrogen from the body. But that’s not all. A healthy gut helps hormones in other ways, too: a balanced microbiome lowers inflammation, which promotes hormone balance (and may be especially helpful for hormonal acne), and supports balanced blood sugar, which is essential for healing hormones. A healthy gut also allows our bodies to extract the nutrients we need for hormone healing from our food and supplements.

If you suffer from hormone-related health issues, like acne, bloating, PMS, heavy or irregular periods, PCOS, ovarian cysts, hair loss, mood swings, fatigue, or low libido, you’re suffering from an underlying hormone imbalance — and you can help heal your symptoms by addressing gut health. A healthy gut is directly linked to healthy hormones.
Tune into todays episode to learn 9 simple ways you can help heal your gut and improve your hormonal health.

    94. The Four Types of PCOS Jun 08, 2021
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Did you know that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS, affects as many as five million women in the United States and it is one of the most common causes of infertility.

PCOS symptoms—including weight gain, weight loss resistance, acne, missing or irregular periods, thinning hair on the top of the head and excess hair on the face and chest—can be annoying at best and debilitating at worst.
Despite the name, polycystic ovarian syndrome has nothing to do with cysts on the ovaries. The things your doctor saw on ultrasound are follicles or eggs, which are normal for the ovary. You can have many eggs and still have normal hormones, and that’s why ultrasound cannot diagnose (or rule out) the hormonal condition PCOS.
PCOS is best defined as androgen excess (high male hormones). Don’t let the term “male hormones” mislead you, however. Androgens are produced in both women and men and play subtle but important roles in the female body. It’s only when they become out of balance that they can cause problems. What this imbalance does is interfere with our regular menstrual cycles. Women with PCOS experience:

    • Missing or irregular periods (not ovulating regularly)
    • Unwanted face and chest hair
    • Loss of hair on the head
    • Acne (specifically on the jawline, chest, and back)
    • Carrying extra weight around the waistline
    • Inability to lose weight
    • Insulin resistance and dysregulated blood sugar (though not in every case. Most women with PCOS have dysregulated insulin, but not all)

To treat PCOS, you need to know what’s driving it. In other words, you need to know the different types of PCOS. And that’s what we dive into today in this episode.

    The Four Types of PCOS

    1.Insulin-resistant PCOS

    2. Post-pill PCOS (which is temporary)

    3. Inflammatory PCOS

    4. Adrenal PCOS, which is far less common
    Tune in to learn more!
Three articles mentioned in the episode:

    • Maybe it’s not PCOS (and PCOS cannot be diagnosed by ultrasound)
    • Pain is not a symptom of PCOS
    • Is it PCOS or hypothalamic amenorrhea or both?
