Making Arbitrary Deadlines Real Mar 06, 2023
    Show notes

I have a habit of resisting “arbitrary” deadlines. An “arbitrary” deadline is typically a task, commitment, or goal with a “pretend” due date.

If you, too, struggle at times with “arbitrary” deadlines or to achieve your goals, check out the Stikk app here:

    All About Stikk

“.. Stikk works by helping people eliminate this gap (between having a goal and achieving it) by using, what we call, a Commitment Contract. A Commitment Contract is a binding agreement you sign with yourself to ensure that you follow through with your intentions—and it does this by utilizing the psychological power of loss aversion and accountability to drive behavior change. By asking our users to sign Commitment Contracts, Stikk helps users define their goal (whatever it may be), acknowledge what it’ll take to accomplish it, and leverage the power of putting money on the line to turn that goal into a reality.”

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • Which of your goals or “arbitrary” deadlines are you struggling to uphold?
    • How can you make your “arbitrary” deadlines or goals more “real”?
    • Why type of accountability do you really need to achieve your goals?
    • Is the potential loss of money (if you don’t achieve a goal) a motivator for you?

Exfoliating Your Skin And Life Mar 05, 2023
    Show notes

Having a “skin care” habit is much like engaging in personal development work:

    • You start using new products. Initially, your skin looks the same. (You increase your self-awareness and start applying what you’re learning at first things don’t seem to change.)
    • Eventually, your skin “reacts” or “responds” to the lotions or products. (You start to make some change and get “triggered” and may assume that you’re “doing it wrong” or that it’s “not working”.)
    • Your dead skin begins to slough off. (Getting triggered is an opportunity to bring up and work through a different area of your life or work.)
    • Your skin begins to glow. (You’ve leveled up BECAUSE of the triggering - not in spite of it.)

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • What new things are you currently learning to increase your self-awareness?
    • What triggers you the most:
      • relationships?
      • body image?
      • money?
      • social status?
      • health?
      • relatives?
      • something else?
    • What are your triggers coming up to teach you?
    • What new version of you are you being called to grow into?

You Must Have a Third Place Mar 04, 2023
    Show notes

There is a small chain of fun and comfortable bookstores in Seattle called Third Place Books in which community members are invited to “browse, linger, lounge, relax, read, eat, laugh, play, talk, listen, and just watch the world go by”.

“Sociologist Ray Oldenberg suggests that each of us needs three places: first is the home; second is the workplace or school; and beyond lies the place where people from all walks of life interact, experiencing and celebrating their commonality as well as their diversity. It is a third place. In his celebrated book, The Great Good Place, Oldenberg discusses how the cafes, pubs, town squares, and other gathering places make a community stronger and bring people together.”

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When you are in your HOME place, what do you intend to do, accomplish, or experience there?
    • When you are in your WORK place, what do you intend to do, accomplish, or experience there?
    • Where is your THIRD PLACE? When you visit your third place, what do you intend to do, accomplish, or experience there?

When You Self-Sabotage By Isolating Mar 03, 2023
    Show notes

We all have different “parts” in our psyches, minds, and souls. Think of each part as a singer on American Idol, competing for the “spotlight” in our lives. Our goal is to:

    • identify
    • accept
    • learn from
    • work with

    our parts.

In her brilliant book Rezoom: The Powerful Reframe to End the Crash-And-Burn Cycle of Food Addiction, author Susan Pierce Thompson outlines 6 Parts than can sabotage our highest self:

    • Indulgers
    • Controllers
    • Caretakers
    • Rebels
    • Inner Critics
    • Isolators

The Isolator Part interferes with creating healthy connections with others.

Here are the Isolator archetypes or “flavors”:

    • Diminisher: “You’re not important and your needs don’t matter.”
    • Procrastinator: “I’ll do it tomorrow.”
    • Cynic: “Don’t trust anyone - they’ll just disappoint you.”
    • Soloist: “I’ll do so much better alone.”
    • Workaholic: “I don’t have time for friends - I’m too busy.”
    • Secret Keeper: “I’m too ashamed - I can’t tell anyone.”
    • Incognito: “I’m only safe if I’m invisible.”
    • Misfit: “I don’t want to belong.”
    • One-Night Stander: “I’ll be physically close to others but not emotionally vulnerable.”
    • Luddite: “I don’t do social media.”
    • Screen Addict: “If I stare at my phone I can avoid interacting with people.”

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice your Isolator Part trying to protect you from experiencing rejection, disappointment, or exclusion?
    • What type of Isolator resonates most with you?
