Feeling Like You Can’t Be Honest Mar 26, 2023
    Show notes

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

When we feel like we can’t be HONEST, it may be because it doesn’t feel SAFE to share or tell the truth.

Here are some reasons we withhold the truth when we don’t feel safe:

    • We DEFEND or protect ourselves from real or perceived consequences.
    • We want to avoid DISAPPOINTING others.
    • We feel INTIMIDATED by someone we perceive to be “superior” to us.
    • We desperately want to avoid PUNISHMENT.
    • We want to PROTECT others from having hurt feelings.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • What real or perceived CONSEQUENCES are you afraid you’ll experience?
    • What EXPECTATIONS do others have of you that you aren’t willing or capable of meeting?
    • When do you withhold the truth because you feel INFERIOR to someone else?
    • How have you been PUNISHED for being honest?
    • When have you experienced others having HURT FEELING because you told the truth?

Feeling Invisible or Ignored Mar 25, 2023
    Show notes

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

“Given that we're all here to be seen, known, and loved, invisibility is one of the most painful human experiences."

    Atlas of the Heart

    Brene Brown, PhD, MSW

When we don’t feel seen, known, and loved, it’s likely that we’ll feel invisible or ignored.

We feel SEEN when others are willing to be:

    • present
    • empathetic
    • comforting
    • supportive

We feel KNOWN when others recognize our:

    • gifts
    • talents
    • strengths

We feel LOVED when others accept and cherish us unconditionally.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice feeling invisible or ignored?
    • When you feel this way, what do you make it mean about you or your worthiness?
    • Who really SEES you?
    • Who really KNOWS you?
    • Who genuinely LOVES you?
    • When do you notice thinking that you aren’t worthy of attention?

    Feeling Lonely Mar 23, 2023
    Show notes

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

“At the heart of loneliness is the absence of meaningful social interaction - an intimate relationship, friendships, family gatherings, or even community or work group connections.”

    Atlas of the Heart

    Brene Brown, PhD, MSW

When we feel LONELY, we feel deeply disconnected or isolated from others.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice feeling disconnected or isolated?
    • When do you notice feeling lonely in:
      • an intimate relationship?
      • a friendship?
      • your family?
      • the community?
      • your workplace?
    • What might prevent you from reaching out to form a connection with others?
    • Who has earned the right to your vulnerability?
    • With whom do you share mutual values, passions or hobbies?

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

When we feel like we DON’T HAVE A VOICE, we may be believing that we can’t speak up.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice feeling like you don’t have a voice?
    • What do you notice telling yourself that you can’t speak up because:
      • you won’t be listened to anyway
      • the other person won’t listen
      • the other person won’t understand
    • When do you notice feeling emotionally, mentally, or physically unsafe to use your voice to speak up?
    • When do you worry that your words will be repeated incorrectly or that someone will put words in your mouth?
    • When do you notice feeling as if your voice is inferior to others?

    Feeling Unloved Mar 21, 2023
    Show notes

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

When we feel a LACK OF AFFECTION, we may also feel UNLOVED.

In his bestselling book, The Five Languages, author Gary Chapman teaches about these five “love languages”:

    • acts of service
    • gift-giving
    • physical touch
    • quality time
    • words of affirmation

We tend to express love to others using our own love language.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice feeling a lack of affection?
    • What is your love language?
    • What might prevent you from communicating your love language to others?

    Feeling Disrespected Mar 20, 2023
    Show notes

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

When we feel RESPECTED by others, what is it that they are:

    • doing/not doing
    • saying/not saying

We need to be willing to identify and communicate to others how we expect to be treated in order to feel respected.

If you haven’t clearly and kindly requested what you expect, it is not another person’s responsibility to read your mind.

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • When do you notice feeling respected by others?
    • When do you notice feeling disrespected by others?
    • What do you need to request from others?
    • What might prevent you from requesting what you need?
    • Which words or actions make you feel unworthy, inadequate, or insufficient?

    Feeling Blamed Mar 19, 2023
    Show notes

An EMOTIONAL TRIGGER is any person, words, actions, situations, or environments that make us emotionally uncomfortable. We’ll likely experience intense, excessive physical sensations.

When we feel BLAMED, it feels as if someone else is saying “It’s all your fault” because:

    • you disappointed them
    • hurt their feelings or caused them pain
    • altered their circumstances negatively

I invite you to consider these questions:

    • According only to me, did I do or say something that I’m not proud of?
    • Have I taken responsibility for my thoughts, beliefs, meanings, feelings, actions and results?
    • Do I allow others to take responsibility for their thoughts, feelings, actions, and results?
    • Is this mine?
    • What am I not willing to take responsibility for doing, saying, or being?
