    Episode 452: Eric Avila – Pro Runner for Adidas on Burnout and Finding the Love of Running Mar 10, 2023

    Eric Avila is an Adidas athlete. He is a US National Road Mile Champion. After years of training with the Golden Coast Track Club, he has recently shared that he is now being coached by Ron Warhurst and training with the Very Nice Track Club out of Michigan.

    He is a 4-time national champion from Southern Oregon University and 6-time all-American. He also talks about his time at NAU and coming back to school at Southern Oregon.

    In this episode, we talk about his road to becoming a professional athlete. He had a moment where he walked away from the sport and I love the story about finding his way back. We also talk a lot about burnout and how to walk through that and overcome it.

    Coaching Series Episode 4: Kevin Hanson – Hansons-Brooks ODP (IHA Episode 451) Mar 07, 2023

    Kevin Hanson has coached high school athletics, everyday runners, and professional runners. Over 20 years ago, Kevin and his brother Keith started the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. They saw a need for training groups in America and they started their own! The model that the Hanson’s team set up has been followed up by many other groups throughout the country and the world.

    The Hansons-Brooks team has produced 4 Olympians, 12 National Champions, 30 World Championship team members, 75 US National Team Members, and 186 top 10 finishes at US Championships. Some of the most notable runners that have run with the Hanson’s are Des Linden, Bryan Sell, and most recently, Natosha Rogers. Natosha recently signed with Puma, and we hear about that transition in this episode.

    Michele Gonzalez is back on the show! Michele was first on the show on episode 16 back in 2016. Some of you may remember her as NYC Running Mama. She had a huge following on social media and with her blog, NYC Running Mama, back in the day. A couple of years ago, she decided that she needed to step away from social media and she shares about that in this episode.

    Michele is a West Point grad, she spent 6 years active duty in the army. She is a 3:07 marathoner and is an Ironman. She is the mom of three and now works at Goldman Sachs in NYC.

    Today on the coaching series, I am so excited to bring Sheila Burrell onto the podcast! Sheila is a two-time Olympian in the heptathlon, she is a five-time US national champion, she is a world championships bronze medalist and in the 2004 Olympics she placed 4th. She is an alumni of UCLA and is now the Head Track and Cross Country Coach for San Diego State University.

    In this episode, we talk about her own career as a heptathlete in the first half of the episode and then we get into her coaching career.     Episode 448: Bailey Kowalczyk – Nike Trail Pro; The Balance of Health and Performance Feb 24, 2023

    Bailey Kowalczyk is a trail runner. I learned a lot in this episode, I love talking to trail runners! She recently signed a contract with Nike running with their trail team. She burst onto the trail scene in 2020 and she had some really great FKTs (fastest known time). Most recently, she had a really great race at the Golden Trail Series which is a stage race were she placed fifth overall. In this epsidoe, we go back to her day srunning at Clemson University. Bailey had some significant troubles at Clemson, she was medically released due to disordered eating. She moved to Boulder, Colorado after that and discovered trail running.

    In this episode, we talk about some of Bailey’s hardships and about how she is passionate about running as your strongest, healthiest self.

    Today’s episode in this coaching series is with Ryan Hall! Ryan is one of the greatest American distance runners of all time! Ryan Hall is a two-time Olympian for the United States in the 2008 and 2012 Marathon. He is the fastest American to ever run the marathon (2:04:58) and half marathon (59:43) distances. Ryan retired from professional running in January of 2016 and is now one of the founders of Run Free Training.

    In this episode, Ryan talks about some techniques and ways to stay in the game mentally when it feels daunting and hard. We also get to hear about his coaching and his training groups.

    I loved digging into Ryan’s mentality and learning about how he coaches his athletes. I always walk away from conversations with Ryan inspired to work hard and to have a healthy mindset.

    Episode 446: Joan Benoit Samuelson; Pioneer in Women’s running- first Women’s Olympic Marathon Champion (1984) Feb 17, 2023

    Joan Benoit Samuelson is an icon in our sport! Joan is the gold medalist from the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984. She held the American record for 28 years in the marathon, 2:21:21, which she ran in Chicago. She won the Boston Marathon in 1979 while a college student and she won it again in 1983. She is the founder of the Beach to Beacon race.

    She is one of the founders of the Donna Marathon which is how we met each other! The Donna Marathon supports families walking through a breast cancer diagnosis through the Donna Foundation and it supports ground breaking research.

    Episode 444: Vicki Hunter – Running and Returning: Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World Feb 10, 2023

    Vicki Hunter is a runner and author. She has a book out called Running and Returning: Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World. She was a competitive runner in her late 20s when she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon in 1988. She went from a 3:50 to a 2:49 marathon in just 16 months. She was also in a horrific car accident while she was pregnant with her first child. She was in the hospital for 6 weeks and was in rehab her entire pregnancy. We talk a lot about that experience and how it changed her life. She ended up having a healthy baby girl on her due date.

    This conversation is a story about Vicki’s relationship with running and how it has changed over the years but how it has always been something that is really important to her. She also recently ran a 3:28 marathon at the age of 62 so we talk about aging in this conversation as well!
