    Chuck Schwartz is on the show today for another episode of the high school coaching series sponsored by V.O2.

    Chuck is the head cross country and track coach at the Air Academy. He has been coaching for over 25 years. He had a very successful running career himself. He ran at Adam’s State University where he was coached by the legendary Coach Joe Vigil. He won a national championship in the steeplechase at Adams State University.

    Chuck has so many accolades as a coach including 13 individual state champions that he has coached and most recently his girls cross country team won the 2022 Colorado 5A Division State Championship. They were 7th in the US! He mentions in this episode that every single member of that state championship team is returning this year.

    Vanessa wrote the book It’s a Marathon Not a Sprint, My Road to the Marathon and PhD. It’s the story of taking on two challenges, training for the marathon and beginning and finishing a doctoral program in Medieval History. Although both challenges may seem in stark opposition to one another, they share a lot in common and require a lot of overcoming significant mental roadblocks.

    Episode 481: Lisa Taylor; Traverse City Central High School Aug 15, 2023

    Lisa Taylor is on the show today for another episode of the high school coaching series sponsored by V.O2.

    Lisa has been the coach at Traverse City Central High School for 30 years. She coached the 2008 Michigan State Championship team as well as the runner-up teams in 2004, 2010, 2014, 2019, and 2020. She has coached 41 individual All-State runners, 16 regional championships, 20 Big North Conference Championships, and 13 times coach of the year nominations from the Michigan Intercollegiate Track Coaches Association. She was Michigan High School Division 1 Coach of the Year in 2008. She also just retired from Executive Director of the Traverse City Track Club, Michigan’s biggest running club.

    Lisa was a high school state champion in her own running career in cross country and track and field!

    I loved hearing from Lisa that she doesn’t value how fast her athletes are running and instead about if they are having fun, if it is a good team environment, helping them become leaders, and how she can gain their trust.

    Episode 480: Maggie Montoya – 2:29 Marathoner Running with Roots Running and Salomon Aug 11, 2023

Recently, at the Grandma’s Half Marathon she broke Kara Goucher’s course record, running 69:26 and won the race.     She has completed three marathons: Houston 2022, Chicago 2022, and Boston this past year. She has a PR of 2:28:07 from Chicago last fall where she placed 8th. She is already qualified for the Olympic Trials marathon coming up and I’m so excited to see what she does there!

    Robyn McGillis and Marie Markham are on the show today for another episode of the high school coaching series supported by V.O2.

    Robyn and Marie are the founders of Wildwood Running. Wildwood is committed to guide, empower, connect, and educate young female runners and coaches that impact young female runners. Robyn and Marie are both high school cross country and track coaches themselves and when they went to clinics about coaching they realized there was this missing piece and they have a lot of questions about coaching high school female runners. They have formed their own clinics with Wildwood to help empower coaches and now athletes themselves to teach about what it means to be a female athlete in these formative years.

    Robyn is a coach at Central Catholic High School and Marie is a coach at Lincoln High School. Robyn and Marie are both retired competitive runners themselves and they believe in the power of female leadership in youth sports and we talk all about this in this episode!

    Episode 478: Lisa Weightman – 4x Olympian for Australia; 2:23:15 Marathon PR at Age 44 Aug 04, 2023
    Show notes

    Lisa Weightman is on the show today! Lisa runs for Team Australia. She has competed in four Olympics (2008-2020). Since competing at her forurth Olympic Games in Tokyo, she is running better than ever. At age 44, she has set two personal bests in the mratahon within 6 months. She ran a 75 second PR at the Berlin Marathon in 2:24 in September 2022. Then in February, she improved that time by another 45 seconds, running 2:23:15 in Osaka. That moved her from the fourth to the third fastest Australian marathon time ever. Then, a week after Osaka she was still in Japan and placed 9th at the Tokyo marathon in a time of 2:31:42.

    This is going to be exciting to watch her as she works to make her fifth Olympic team. If she does that, she will be the first track and field athlete to make five Olympics for Team Australia. She is also running at the World Championships this year in Budapest which is exciting because her last world champs marathon was Berlin in 2009!

    Lisa works full time for IBM and has an 8-year old son.

    I am excited to bring one of my friends, Chris Turner, on the show today. I met Chris through the Donna Foundation, which helps people that are walking through a breast cancer diagnosis. Chris is on the board of the Donna Foundation. He is also on the board for Girls on the Run in Tallahassee and the Tallahassee Symphony Board. He volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Still I Run. He has run four out of the size major marathons. He is a Run Disney Galloway Pacer. He works for AARP in Florida doing community outreach. He is the assistant coach for Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, Florida.

    Episode 476: Annie Hughes; Extreme Ultra Running; Moab 240 and Leadville 100 Champion, Recent 3rd Place at Hardrock 100 Jul 28, 2023

    Annie Hughes is an ultrarunner who just placed 3rd at Hardrock 100. She is an up and coming ultrarunner but has already made a name for herself in the short time that she has been doing it. In 2019, she left her college team to pursue ultrarunning and hasn’t looked back!

    Annie lives in Leadville, Colorado and won the Leadville 100 and became the youngest female to ever win that race. She also won the Moab 240. Just last year, Annie placed as the first female and third overall and broke the course record by 14 hours at the Cocodona 250. She then went on to place first female and second overall, setting the course record, and becoming the first woman to finish the High Lonesome 100 in under 24 hours.
