The Girl With All The Gifts (2016) feat. Carolyn Mauricette Sep 11, 2024

Show notes

Hide your cat and don't say zombie because we're talking Colm McCarthy's 2016 adaptation of M.R.Carey's YA novel, The Girl With All The Gifts. Along for the ride is returning guest Carolyn Mauricette!

Anchored by great performances from Glenn Close and newcomer Sennia Nanua, this dystopian "hungries" film is surprisingly complex, especially its dark/happy ending.

Plus: celebrating black girls, The Last of Us comparisons, comparisons to the book, and Melanie's young queer love for Ms. Justineau.

Micro Queers: The Exorcism of Saint Patrick (2024) Sep 09, 2024

Show notes

Is there something in the water? We're back with another queer horror indie tackling conversion/aversion therapy. This time it's writer/director Quinn Armstrong's trilogy opener, The Exorcism of Saint Patrick (2024). C/W: suicide

This one is doing its own thing, from great gore effects to beautiful exterior shots and even a fat gay teen main character (yay diverse representation!)

Beetlejuice (1988) Sep 04, 2024

Show notes

To tie into Tim Burton's new sequel, we're revisiting the 1988 classic Beetlejuice.

Trace has a funny backstory with the film, while Joe barely has a connection to it. We both agree, however, that the film is a creative triumph, with amazing characters and boundless background details that flesh out the world.

Plus: multiple queer elements, the film's obsession with suicide, the animated cartoon and the musical adaptation, and why Delia is *the* best character.

Reference: Tori Williams. "No One Sees Me: Queerness Throughout Beetlejuice." Gayly Dreadful.

Micro Queers: Ganymede (2024) Sep 02, 2024

Show notes

Repress that gay demon and avert the aversion therapy because we're discussing Ganymede (2024), a queer thriller that we quite liked!

When a small town wrestling star develops a crush on an openly gay classmate, all Hell breaks loose when he begins seeing visions of a demonic ganymede.

Featuring affecting lead performances from Pablo Castelblanco and Jordan Doww and over-the-top performances from David Koechner and Robin Lively (Teen Witch), Ganymede is a bit all over the place, but we think the pros outweigh the cons.

CW: Suicide, self-harm.

Critters (1986) Aug 28, 2024

Show notes

Hop out of that toilet and repair that slingshot because we're headed to the cozy little town of Grover's Bend, Kansas to meet up with some Krites in Stephen Herek's 1986 horror comedy Critters (can you believe it's Joe's first time???).

Join us as we go deep into the production of this film that's absolutely not a ripoff of Gremlins (seriously!) before diving into the hilarious antics of the titular toothy furballs and the adventures of the Brown family.

Plus: a discussion of "toned films," not-so-bratty-Brad (Scott Grimes), bowling alley shenanigans and one absolutely hilarious use of subtitles.
