    Gen X, This is Why.

Gen X, This is Why is a podcast that re-examines the sometimes bizarre and often scarring media from our shared childhood. Jennie and Amye, sisters and sometimes mortal enemies, are your hosts. Our first stop is Walnut Grove as we take a fresh look at our favorite frontier family (as if we can name another), the Ingalls. There is some seriously weird sh*t in this show that answers a lot of questions…

    Show notes

In this episode we introduce a new segment, “Jennie, whose fault is this?” and we all get to see hero mode go Super Saiyan. There are some more rando characters giving speeches, having weird sons, and wasting our time. Pa goes all American Gladiator across a moving train and then ends up in a long, silent fight with Robert Redford. Edwards and Pa find and rescue the kids. AGAIN.

Blockbusters: The Karate Kid Sep 25, 2020
    Show notes

Journey with us back to 1984, as we follow the tale of Daniel LaRusso and his bully Johnny, who wears his shorts WAY too short, even for the 80’s. Daniel and his mom move from the crowded, rude, hellscape that is the east coast to beautiful, sunny California, where everyone is friendly and helpful--nope. Instead, Daniel is welcomed by being run off the road on his bicycle (yes, a kid’s bicycle) by guys on motorcycles who are 3-4 years older than him, because that’s badass. He decides to fight back by learning karate, from a book... His “elderly” super, who is 55 and happens to be a karate master, learns of Daniel’s dilemma and decides to take on this project and get some help with chores around the house. We learn of Jennie’s karate career and Amye insists that no one who went to this movie wanted to watch a movie about karate. They challenge Johnny and his dojo, who are all obviously on extra doses of testosterone, to a battle in an upcoming tournament. Daniel lives. Cut to black.

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep14 A Matter of Faith Sep 20, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode, otherwise known as the “Caroline almost chops her leg off” or “Caroline’s self-surgery” episode, Caroline gets a day alone to relax and bake 15 pies but her bliss is interrupted by a near-death experience, because of course it is. She almost dies from an infected scratch which she got from Pa’s shoddy workmanship on his wagon and Rev Alden’s inability to fundraise. We try to figure out who the a-hole is who distracted Doc Baker from treating Caroline, but fail and we now realize that all old-timey guys and their sons look the same to us. We also don’t recognize cows. Timmy chimes in (no one asked) on the quality of the Ingalls’ roof and Amye accepts the challenge to set a bonfire in her field with no matches after 2 days of pounding rain.

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep12 The Talking Machine Sep 14, 2020
    Show notes

Nellie and Laura find themselves in a love triangle with a young Beck look-alike who thinks he’s Thomas Edison. All hell breaks loose when Willie helps Nellie record Laura without her knowledge on what we are considering the first cell phone. Mary misses a prime opportunity to kick Nellie’s butt and instead comforts Laura in a painfully uncomfortable and uncharacteristic moment. Pa builds a green roof on the barn and fails at Pawn Stars. A very young Albert makes a cameo and we ask ourselves, did Laura “trapes” in the books? Amye is confused by basic scientific concepts and Jennie names “The Drama Barn.”

    Blockbusters: Heathers Sep 10, 2020
    Show notes

Trigger Warnings: School violence, gun violence, sexual assault, extreme homophobia, toxic masculinity, suicide and murder.

Join us as we revisit a seminal movie from our adolescence, which says a lot. Jennie reveals her ideal high school boyfriend dressed like Highlander and was a straight-up sociopath, while Amye reveals her love of angry diary writing. We actually notice Veronica’s parents this time around and their weird Wes Anderson reality, and we do an amazing impression of a conversation between Christian Slater and Gary Busey. Come along as we discuss the hard slap of the 90s that woke us from our 80s coma.

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep11 His Father's Son Sep 07, 2020
    Show notes

Edwards buys a gun from Mark Twain and almost dies because he made John Jr. go hunting in this classic bear attack episode. Even Amye wasn’t able to ruin our bear-mauling high with her recitation of a Lord Byron poem from 869 BC. Mary’s crush on John Jr. deepens and we finally find out what the hell the deal is with her glasses. Caroline, the sorcerer, makes ice cream with a lump of ice and OF COURSE, Charles saves the day when John Jr. goes all Edgar Allan Poe.

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep09 At the End of the Rainbow Aug 31, 2020
    Show notes

Little House gets all Ozarks in this episode when Laura and Jonah embark on a plan to collect what they believe is gold from the river. Jonah seems like a liability at first, but turns out to be a solid lieutenant when he “borrows” the Olsen’s entire screen door to improve their panning operation. Amye rewrites the script and renames the episode a few times. Jennie reveals a passion for the metric system and rock shows-and not the cool kind. Laura and Jonah get a harsh slap of reality from Mr. Sprague and a valuable lesson in geology, when they learn that they’ve been tricked by fool’s gold.

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep08 Remember Me Aug 24, 2020
    Show notes

Join us for one of the saddest Little House episodes, that ended in a pint of Ben + Jerry’s Netflix and Chilled for Amye. The episode opens with the attempted murder of three puppies, and doesn’t get much better. You’ll be as exhausted as we were after an hour of carrying around Michael Landon’s 250-lb metaphor of Laura trying to find homes for the rescued pups, while Charles is trying to find homes for three children. Even though it takes someone dying and three children being homeless to get Edwards to pop the question to Grace, she enthusiastically says yes.

Blockbusters: Howard the Duck Aug 21, 2020
    Show notes

Jump into this $31 million dollar dumpster fire with us as we follow Howard, an evolved duck from another planet who falls for a heavy metal vixen in Cleveland, Ohio. Yes, that is a sadly accurate summary. If you need more convincing, Tears for Fears attacks Lea Thompson and the principal from Ferris Bueller turns into a dark lord of the universe. This goes from a bad Roger Rabbit to a high-budget Evil Dead, and I’m not sure if that makes it better or worse.

    Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep07 The Camp-out Aug 17, 2020
    Show notes

Through some plot writing sorcery, the Ingalls family and the Olesons end up on a camping trip together. Much to Pa’s dismay, even his juvenile temper tantrum doesn’t prevent Harriet from coming along. Laura and Mary join forces against a common enemy as they let Harriet and Willie rub poison ivy all over themselves. Nellie falls into a river that is 6 inches deep and Laura tries to help her (fool) but she still almost drowns, and Pa has to search for that damn kid again. Amye discovers the mechanism by which a river travels downhill and we both relive our traumatic camping experiences.
