    Gen X, This is Why.

Gen X, This is Why is a podcast that re-examines the sometimes bizarre and often scarring media from our shared childhood. Jennie and Amye, sisters and sometimes mortal enemies, are your hosts. Our first stop is Walnut Grove as we take a fresh look at our favorite frontier family (as if we can name another), the Ingalls. There is some seriously weird sh*t in this show that answers a lot of questions…

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep09 Bully Boys Dec 21, 2020
    Show notes

Welcome to the greatest episode of Little House ever made...well, in season three anyway. The rando Galander brothers show up in Walnut Grove and wreak havoc on a town still healing from Fred’s reign of terror. The youngest Galander terrorizes the school yard while his much older brothers swindle the Olesons and Hanson out of goods and services. But things get real in Walnut Grove when the Galanders come for Caroline. This episode ends with most of Walnut Grove battered and bloodied sitting in church watching Rev Alden beat people up. Yes, that happened.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep08 Fred Dec 14, 2020
    Show notes

Join us for the best episode of Little House ever! After working for a neighbor, Laura agrees to take his renegade billy goat as payment. The cleverly named Fred ends up being Satan in goat form however, as he terrorizes the unsuspecting citizens of Walnut Grove. Fred makes his way through the town head butting people, undoing Pa’s hard work, and eating Mary’s homework. Laura and Carl try to pawn the goat off on everyone from Rev Alden to Mrs. Oleson, to no avail. Mr. Edwards opens The Rum Shack, Doc Baker is no help as usual, and Laura learns what it’s like to be ditched for a group of hot babes. Amye gets some shirtless Pa action, and Jennie passionately defends Fred- because of course she does.

Blockbusters: Top Gun Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

Amye tries to resist, but eventually falls for 1986’s Tom Cruise as Maverick, a Top Gun fighter pilot with a grossly-inflated ego. She doesn’t stand a chance, however, against Kelly McGillis who is a whole five years older than him and is apparently robbing the cradle. The beautiful California coastline with its eight-hour sunsets is the backdrop for our story about a group of boys, er...men, competing for the title of Top Ego. Tom Cruise just can’t seem to stay inside the lines as he plays volleyball in a bomber jacket, rides a motorcycle without a helmet, and does something with a MIG that we don’t understand. Did we mention he’s a Maverick?

    Show notes

The Shakespearean tragedy that is Charles’ family continues as Lansford settles into life in Walnut Grove. Things go sideways when Pa has to shoot Bunny and Lansford attempts to stop him. Laura plays Pa Roulette and loses. Jennie is forced to issue an apology (which she later rescinds), and lines up a Thanksgiving day challenge for our parents. Amye grows angry at Laura’s love for her grandfather. Lansford lacks the upper body strength to leave town, and Laura goes missing….again.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep06 Journey into Spring Part 1 Nov 30, 2020
    Show notes

Journey into anything but spring in yet another poorly named episode of Little House. A better name would have been journey into sorrow, despair, or gloom, as the Ingalls family deals yet again with multiple tragedies. We discover the drama barn has a ring of sorrow around it-so don't stand too close. Carrie has to make an actual decision and we're screwed. Amye questions genetics when she discovers Charles has a hot father, but an unattractive brother, and we all get to witness the next level of hero mode - Hero MF Mode.

Time Capsule: The Challenger Disaster Part 2 Nov 26, 2020
    Show notes

This pod covers episodes 3-4 of the 4 part series.
We continue our discussion of the Challenger Disaster of 1986 through the Netflix series, Challenger: The Final Flight (2020). We discover the astronauts’ beach house, where we are certain slick-talking Deke Slayton was up to his eyeballs in women. We are surprised to learn this whole disaster may be the fault of The New England Patriots, Amye gets to talk about poetry again, and we meet our new hero, Nobel-Prize winning physicist Richard Fenyman who trolls NASA with his own press conference and we are here for it. Finally, we continue to share our own memories of that day and reflect on what the loss of the space shuttle Challenger might have meant to our generation.

Time Capsule: The Challenger Disaster Part 1 Nov 26, 2020
    Show notes

This pod covers episodes 1-2 of the 4 part series.
We revisit the Challenger Disaster of 1986 through the Netflix series, Challenger: The Final Flight (2020). We meet our new obsession, June Scobee-who we want to take out for martinis. Jennie launches into a passionate defense of weathermen and there’s a lot of science Amye doesn’t understand. For reasons we can’t explain, Ralphie from A Christmas Story gets a ton of airtime, and we remember just how sexist and racist newscasters were allowed to be. Finally, we share our own memories of that day and reflect on what the loss of the space shuttle Challenger might have meant to our generation.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep05 The Monster of Walnut Grove Nov 23, 2020
    Show notes

Join us as we revisit the night Nels Oleson went crazy, chopped Harriet’s head off, and threatened Laura’s life. Okay, actually it was all a misunderstanding, but one Nellie and Willie use to their advantage of course. Mischief Night looms over Walnut Grove as the Headless Horseman shows up for an uncomfortable amount of time, Carrie’s feet go all Evil Dead 2, and Jennie screws up an index card on trick or treating. We recount our personal experience with people losing their heads, and Amye is falling out of love with Michael Landon

    Show Notes:

Correction: Jennie f'd up when she was reading her index card and said that All Saint's Day is on Nov 2. It's on Nov 1.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep04 Little Girl Lost Nov 16, 2020
    Show notes

The drama of season three continues as Carrie takes a page out of baby Jessica’s book and falls down a well-actually a mineshaft, but a hole nonetheless. Hanson’s longtime rival shows up in the form of a drunk drifter who likes to sleep on the side of the road. Amye’s re-write corner is very busy this week, and we spend an inordinate amount of time discussing ironing.
