    Gen X, This is Why.

Gen X, This is Why is a podcast that re-examines the sometimes bizarre and often scarring media from our shared childhood. Jennie and Amye, sisters and sometimes mortal enemies, are your hosts. Our first stop is Walnut Grove as we take a fresh look at our favorite frontier family (as if we can name another), the Ingalls. There is some seriously weird sh*t in this show that answers a lot of questions…

Bonus: Cobra Kai Season 2 Review Nov 12, 2020
    Show notes

We are traumatized by a trip to Johnny’s Whitesnake fantasy world which foreshadows his Tinder experience / dating disaster. Speaking of trauma, Kreese goes all scorched earth on the new Cobra Kai as he pulls a coup d'etat ala Jennie in the Me-Me B’s circa 1984. Jennie throws a challenge out to our biggest fan, and Amye fangirls over Bon Jovi. We love this show.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep03 The Race Nov 09, 2020
    Show notes

Just saying that - cats don't need shoes, chickens don't need shoes, foxes don't need shoes, bears don't need shoes. This leads us into the 400lb metaphor of the girls needing shoes (as well as the horse). Willie almost dies from eating candy apples. Dumbledore almost loses his bet. Also, Doc Baker doesn't get paid in money, he gets paid in hams.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep02 Bunny Nov 02, 2020
    Show notes

Nellie beats a horse until it tries to kill her, and naturally Mrs. Olsen blames 12-year-old Laura. Doc Baker gives one of his especially helpful diagnoses, “She’s no better, but no worse,” “Sometimes this is temporary, sometimes it isn’t.” What the hell Doc? Jennie is a better doctor. We learn about Amye’s encyclopedic knowledge of soap operas and the ill-fated DimeraTimes (her AOL blog). In what we are calling “peak Nellie,” she is manipulating everyone to get a fix for her bizarre, age-inappropriate fascination with dolls. Amye didn’t comb her hair and Jennie didn’t shower. Only the best for y’all.

    Blockbusters: Halloween Oct 29, 2020
    Show notes

A six-year-old maniac murders his sister on Halloween, then does a fifteen-year stint in a mental hospital under what appears to be the subpar psychiatric care of Dr. Loomis. We ask the number one question of the 1970s and 80s, “Where the hell are these parents?” and discover how risky an endeavor babysitting was if you wanted to live past your teens. There are some unsolicited opinions from Gen Z’ers and we even encounter an old pal from Walnut Grove.

Little House on the Prairie S3 Ep01 The Collection Oct 26, 2020
    Show notes

Rev Alden shows up unconscious and smokey on the floor of his runaway wagon and is rescued by Johnny Cash. Welcome to season three people. This episode has all the makings of a classic Johnny Cash song as an entire town we never heard of gets demolished by fire, the kind folks of Walnut Grove get swindled by a rock icon, Mary gets into a stranger’s car (no candy needed), and June Carter Cash wrestles the death angel for Rev Alden. The only body count ends up being Mine, Alicia’s poorly named dog after he was “bad sick.”

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep21 Going Home Oct 19, 2020
    Show notes

The chickens and cows have a very dramatic episode as a tornado we never got to see- and turns out was caused by a holy clerical error-threatens life on the Ingalls’ farm. We again struggle with basic concepts of farming. Mrs and Mrs Claus try to buy the farm (but only figuratively) as everyone is puppeted by Hansen. Michael Landon goes all Werner Herzog but in a bad way. Darn. Fool. Cow.

Blockbusters: Nightmare on Elm Street Oct 15, 2020
    Show notes

Jennie is crankier than usual since she is forced to watch this sad excuse for a horror movie (because of some shady Facebook poll) when she could have been watching Cobra Kai. Amye tries to defend the concept of a maniac stalking your dreams, as we struggle to piece together this trainwreck of a narrative. Poor Johnny Depp who is having an equally difficult time with the script, dials it in while he waits to get murdered. Basically, this movie was TERRIBLE. You’re welcome.

    Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep20 Soldier's Return Oct 12, 2020
    Show notes

Good news, despite Amazon’s description, there is no inappropriate relationship between Mary and Granville. Mary is just his best student, because of course she is. Despite Doc Baker’s effort to classify controlled substances and keep them in his office, Mrs Whipple still manages to have a canister full of loose morphine, or maybe Amye has that fact wrong. Jennie hates on oboes and harmonicas, Amye ruins her life by getting a puppy, and we had to call our father to settle an argument. Busy week.

Little House on the Prairie S2 Ep18 For My Lady Oct 05, 2020
    Show notes

Cheatin’ Charles digs himself into a hole of lies while he sneaks around town to do work for the smokin’ hot Widow Thurman in exchange for a surprise gift for Caroline. Unfortunately, the gift is a set of dishes and not an ice house, so Caroline still needs to will ice cream into existence. We discuss important topics like-is it possible to recognize someone’s wagon and how to properly lie about your whereabouts when cheating on your spouse. Jennie phones in her index card and Amye finally figures out how to rewind--thanks Mom.

Bonus: Cobra Kai Season 1 Review Sep 29, 2020

After Amye's incessant nagging, Jennie decides to check out Cobra Kai and ends up binging all of season one in one night. Join us as we discuss whether or not Johnny is hot-despite him being a huge jerk, what makes Daniel soooo insufferable, and why Gen Z probably thinks we're all nuts.
