029: Cathy Savage | Lessons in Market Disruption May 21, 2018
    Show notes

We all have dreams to be successful in business, and our guest Cathy Savage has managed to rise to the top of two completely different industries: fitness and network marketing. On top of that, she’s helped Kim (that’s my wife – you can find her in our Fr-Date episodes every Friday) and I build our own multiple six figures business.

So how was Cathy able to make lightning strike twice, creating two multi-million dollar businesses? Let’s find out.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [3:50] Cathy’s childhood & the profound impact her dad has had on her life
    • [7:15] How Cathy is empowering her children today
    • [9:20] What Cathy Savage fitness is & why she started it
    • [12:10] How Cathy predicts & identifies trends (like being the first to offer virtual fitness coaching)
    • [14:30] Disrupting the fitness industry – twice
    • [19:05] Why gratitude is such a powerful leadership skill
    • [22:25] The components of a champion, in fitness or business
    • [24:10] Building a network marketing business
    • [32:30] When playing hard gets hard to do
    • [39:50] How Cathy drowns out the noise & resets the hard drive
    • [43:40] Questions from the audience

The Most Important Skill for Entrepreneurs

Cathy is a phenomenal business person, there’s no doubt about that – but part of the reason she has been so successful as an entrepreneur is due to when she came up with her ideas.

Cathy believes that “any entrepreneur has to have the ability to sense a need before everyone else does, and they have to solve that need before some people even see there is a need.”

If you can identify a need and then offer a solution, nothing will hold you back in business.

    Coaching Makes Champions

And if you don’t have that skill already, there is still hope – you can learn!

People often ask for quick hacks or the secret sauce to success, but they don’t always love the answer: “The secret sauce is to be open and coachable to someone who has been there and done that.”

027: Chris Ducker | Outsourcing Your Way From Work To Play May 14, 2018
    Show notes

About 10 years ago, Chris Ducker publicly committed to getting free from his brick and mortar business and becoming a virtual CEO. And just one year later, he did it.

Chris now owns one of the most effective outsourcing companies in the world, Virtual Staff Finder, and is the Founder of the leading personal brand business education company, Youpreneur.com.

Following his journey really motivated me because I want to get free of my brick and mortar business, and I know a lot of you do, too – so this is the perfect opportunity for us all to learn more about getting levarge, together.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [3:35] The quote on Chris’s door: “The way to being nothing is doing thing”
    • [8:30] Telemarketing & bartending
    • [11:20] Working in the Hong Kong film industry & meeting Jet Li

    • [51:40] Playing hard with the family
    • [56:30] The last time Chris cried tears of joy
    • [1:02:10] Rapid fire questions

    The Cardinal Rule of Outsourcing

Chris is the king of outsourcing at this point – but there are still some things that he doesn’t outsource: anything that ONLY Chris can do.

Chris writes his content, creates his videos, and guests on podcasts because no one else can do those things.

But if it’s possible for someone else to do a task, Chris systemetizes it by creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), writing it down in granular detail, and assigning it to someone else.

When you master this simple system of prioritization and outsourcing, it guarantees that your time is only spent on the things that have the greatest return on investment for your business and life.

    026: Lessons From Our Parenting Mistakes | Fri-Date May 11, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: How we messed up & succeeded in parenting... all at the same time!

Parenting is so worthwhile, but this shit ain’t easy. These little humans don’t come with a manual, and you WILL mess up.

For today’s Fri-Date, Kim and I chat about the most important key to parenting, the importance of the first 5-7 years, and how to avoid letting your past insecurities leak into your parenting. Full disclosure: we are not specialists, we’re just parents. But we’ve learned a lot over the past 15 years, and we’d like to share it with you.

What’s the most important thing we learned?

You’re going to clash with your significant other, at some point, about how to raise your kids. Kim and I came from wildly different backgrounds, and as a result, we do things in wildly different ways.

But you can’t let that division manifest in your parenting – you have to present a united front. You have to teach your child that, when a decision is made by either parent, that is THE decision.

One tool we have is a safe word – Silver Squirrell – for any time a situation might come up when our child tries to ask both of us the same thing, looking for different results. So if the kid comes in and asks one of us for ice cream for breakfast, we’ll pull the other aside or a send a text with the safe word, even if we don’t have time to fully explain.

    • [1:06:30] Challenges with growing a business & relationship, simultaneously
    • [1:07:30] Nerves & public speaking

    The #1 Self-Development Tool

People often ask Tommy what the #1 self-development tool is, and he always has the same answer:

“Go travel, and if you can, travel alone to a cultural that is unfamiliar to you – because you learn real quick how to be humble, you learn real quick how to have perspective, you learn real quick how to harness communication skills that are going to help you for the rest of your life.”

The Three C’s of Massive Success

    1. Clarity. If you ask someone, “Where will you be in five years,” most people don’t have an answer for you; they won’t be able to tell you exactly what they want to create. If you don’t know what it is, how can you achieve or create it?
    2. Consistency. Clarity is a daily practice, and you have to be consistent with that practice to maintain clarity.
    3. Certainty. If you are consistent with your clarity long enough, you will develop certainty, which is just self-trust; “a self-reliance in who you are, what’s important to you, and where you’re headed.”

If you combine these three things, it’s just a matter of time before your dreams start coming to life.

    The Insight Integration Process

After we have insight, we need to change our behaviors for it to have any impact on our lives, meaning we have to integrate that insight into our lives.

“We integrate by taking inventory of our patterns, routines, habits, mindsets, the media we consume, our relationships, what we eat, what we drink – all of that stuff.” Then, we begin to make changes.

There are three steps to the integration process:

    1. Knowing
    2. Doing
    3. Being

After we make those changes, and that original insights seeds a new habit, we become the principles that we learned by living it every single day.

The Daily 6: Six Daily Habits for Entrepreneurs

Tommy gamifies good habits for himself and his clients, tracking them on Wufoo.

    Every single day, Tommy practices…

    1. Gratitude
    2. Meditation
    3. Encouragement
    4. Physical training
    5. Read about business
    6. One purposeful action for his business

“I think tracking is massive, even with simple things like our habits and routines.”

    UnResolutions: Setting Better Goals

92% of resolutions go nowhere, for two reasons: a change in the calendar does nothing to create change in your behavior or life, and people tend to set half-hearted goals; “people are interested in things, but they’re not actually committed.”

People expect their resolution to be at level 10 – something that creates massive impact in their life – but their commitment is only at level two – taking one action occasionally.

So we have two options at this point: lower our expectations or level up our commitments.

If you want to resist average then, obviously, you have to level up your commitments, but you have to do it strategically because change is hard.

A “2018” resolution, or a goal that’s a year away, doesn’t create a lot of urgency. Keep that one-year vision, but then bring it down to what needs to happen in the first 90 days, and then even further into the first 30 days.

If you don’t do something today, then chances are that nothing is going to happen.

    024: Travel Strategies To Take A Month Off | Fri-Date May 04, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: How and why we travel (without breaking the bank)

Most people say they love travel and everybody has their own bucket list, but very few people are actually checking items off that bucket list.

If you want to make travel real priority, this episode is for you – because Kim and I have a lot of tips for travelling more often, making the most out each trip, and doing it all without gouging our wallets.

    Today you’re going to learn…

    1. How always having an upcoming trip has made Kim and I more focused, more creative, and less stressed.
    2. How we manage to spend a month in Europe without racking up a huge credit card debt.
    3. Our strategies & tips for make the most of your trips (without coming back exhausted).

    Travel Strategies and Tips

    • Plan to take at least two weeks off if you are flying anywhere abroad.
    • Take your time in any one place – you don’t have to see everything at once! You’re not going to get the most out of a trip to Rome or Paris if you only visit them for a day.
    • You also don’t need to plan every single minute of your day! Some of the most memorable moments from our trips were unplanned.
    • Book your next trip before you go home.
    • Get a credit card with amazing travel benefits, and then put every purchase possible on that card.
    • Sites like 1800flyeurope.com can save you a lot of money on air fare, and booking on Tuesdays makes it even cheaper!
    • Find a hotel in a convenient location, but don’t book online – call them up and negotiate the rate (often, they will offer you a better deal than you find online because they have to pay a commission to those sites!).
    • To help us budget, we pre-pay by arranging with the hotel to charge us monthly throughout the year. This will help you avoid that huge credit card bill at the end of a trip.
    • Every week, we transfer money to a Travel savings account, and that’s our spending money abroad.
    • Drink just as much, if not more, water! Dehydration is a key factor in exhaustion.
    • Kindness goes a long way, everywhere!

023: Hayden Vavra | Add Network Marketing To Your Portfolio Apr 30, 2018
    Show notes

Hayden Vavra and his wife Emily are only 30 years old, but they’ve made over $1,000,000 every year since they were 26 – which puts them in the top 0.5% of American income.

How did they accomplish this feat? Network marketing!

We break down why Hayden chose to do network marketing, why network marketing gets such a bad rap, and a whole lot more.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [2:50] Hayden’s physical transformation
    • [8:00] What network marketing is
    • [10:05] Why network marketing gets a bad reputation
    • [11:50] When and why Hayden started network marketing
    • [21:00] The income model of network marketing
    • [29:15] How Hayden’s mindset has changed since he started network marketing
    • [32:00] Social media & network marketing
    • [35:30] Struggling with rejection
    • [38:45] Hayden’s favorite failure
    • [49:00] What’s on Hayden’s vision board for the future
    • [51:10] Hayden’s daily routine & workout regimen

    What is network marketing?

Hayden describes network marketing as “business stripped down to its most fun parts,” which are connecting with people, offering solutions, and helping people reach their goals. Hayden and Emily, specifically, are helping people reach their nutrition goals.

Entrepreneur defines network marketing as, “A business model in which a distributor network is needed to build the business. Usually such businesses are also multilevel marketing in nature in that payouts occur at more than one level.” Some of the best-known examples are Mary Kay Cosmetics, Avon, and Tupperware.

Network marketing often gets a bad reputation because it is compared to or confused with pyramid schemes. Hayden thinks this is because, like in any profession, there were some bad actors – but he also thinks the profession has matured beyond those growing pains and the worst days are behind it.

And it makes a lot of sense that these businesses are increasingly popular today because everyone is looking for a side hustle, or just a little extra income, and everyone wants a product to solve their problems and help them reach their goals.

If you want an even more in-depth explanation, Emily Vargas breaks it down in their video, “Give Yourself a Raise.”

    The Income Model

Hayden likes the income model of network marketing because everyone is equally invested; “If I don’t help other people be successful, I can’t be successful, and vice versa.”

When things start out, like in any other business, you will feel like you’re doing way more work than you’re getting paid to do. But as momentum builds – as you find the right people – things will begin to snowball.

“All of a sudden, it’s this big wave of people who have the same mission, the same vision, and they’re all moving in the same direction.”

However, a lot of people expect immediate results and instant gratification (a common problem with popular side hustles these days). But if you are patient, find people who have already figured out the process, listen to them, and then trust that process, you will succeed.

“You have to do the work if you want the results.”

022: How To Find Out What Your Strengths Are | Fri-Date Apr 27, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Improving relationships, excelling in business, and managing your weakness.

Kim and I are newly obsessed with the StrengthsFinder assessment, and this week we’re going to share how you can leverage this tool to improve your relationships, excel in business, and manage your weakness.

    What is StrengthsFinder?

This assessment measures and ranks you on a unique set of 34 natural talents, as opposed to skills, and identifies your five greatest strengths.

When you become aware of your strengths – and the strengths of the people you live with or work with – it’s easier to take advantage of each others’ strengths and work as an effective team. Can you imagine what using this knowledge can do for a business team, or a couple?

You can take the Gallup StrengthsFinder test here: gallupstrengthscenter.com.

We recommend taking the full 34-strength test. It’s a little more expensive than just the top five, but it’s just as helpful to know what your weaknesses are so that you can better manage them, too.

021: Amanda McVey | Behind The Scenes At Bulletproof Labs Apr 23, 2018
    Show notes

Amanda McVey is running the new Bulletproof Labs in Santa Monica, where they use the most cutting-edge, science-backed technologies available to help people achieve the highest state of physical & cognitive performance.

Or, as they like to say, “To put it simply, we help people kick more ass.”

Disclaimer: The information in this episode is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [4:00] What led Amanda to Bulletproof Labs
    • [6:10] Why Dave Asprey created Bulletproof Labs
    • [9:15] Dave Asprey: master marketer or mad scientist?
    • [11:40] What is biohacking?
    • [14:00] The three categories of the Lab’s machines: mind, body, and measure
    • [20:45] When Tony Robbins came into Bulletproof Labs (& why he loves the atmospheric cell trainer)
    • [35:45] Tracking your progress using data
    • [41:30] What IV’s they have & when they’re effective
    • [43:40] The payment system at Bulletproof Labs
    • [46:50] How Amanda’s thinking has shifted since working at Bulletproof Labs

    What is Bulletproof?

Bulletproof is best known as the company that got people to start putting butter in your coffee, but they do a whole lot more than that.

Dave Asprey, the man who founded Bulletproof and wrote The Bulletproof Diet, is one of the first online entrepreneurs; he sold the first item to ever be sold online, a t-shirt with the caffeine molecule on it.

Dave then started applying his tech skills to the body, becoming one of the premiere biohackers in the health & wellness space. Bulletproof Labs is the next logical step in his grand biohacking experiment.

    Measurement, Mind, & Body

The first thing you’ll do when you enter Bulletproof Labs is measurement. For people who really want to dig in, their nurses can take your blood to look at your hormones, inflammation, macronutrients, and telomere length, in addition to things like your weight, cell health, stage of ketosis, executive brain function, coordination, and more.

After they have that data, they are able to make really comprehensive training decisions for that specific individual.

This is because Bulletproof Lab’s goal isn’t fixing the outside of your body – they want to train you at a cellular level, because when your cells are healthy, everything else improves as a side effect.

“At Bulletproof Labs, we really do believe that every person who walks through our doors is already perfect. They have the full capacity to do anything that they could ever want, and our job is simply stripping away limiting beliefs, stripping away inflammation, and giving them more access to their own capacity.”
