020: Finding & Developing Your Passion Project | Fri-Date WIth The Wifey Apr 20, 2018
    Show notes

Today Kim and I share how a decade of failures led us to our passion business, how you can find your passion, and how you can turn that into a business (if you want to).

When people decide to start a new venture, they often ask themselves, “What does the world need?” We definitely did this for years, chasing bed bug and hemorrhoid relief businesses because they had a lot of google searches – but we had no passion for it.

Instead, ask yourself, “What makes me come alive?” What makes you passionate? What makes you focus on impacting the world? THAT is actually what the world needs.

    Finding Your Passion

We did two things to narrow in on our passion and business, and these simple exercises can help you too:

    1. Make a list of things you love to do; things that you naturally do and that light you up.
    2. Ask your honest friends – people who will give you true feedback – about what you are good at, or what gift you bring into their life.

Our friends told Rob that he was inquisitive, and he does love to ask questions, and that he inspires (and pushes) them to Play Hard when they get stuck in the world of Work Hard. We took that feedback and, ultimately, created the Work Hard Play Hard podcast!

    Turning It Into a Business

Start by taking a self-assessment – Something like StrengthsFinder, a test that will identify your top five strengths.

When starting a business, trying to build up your weaknesses is a waste of time. Instead, leverage your strengths and hire people to compensate for your weaknesses.

After you know what your strengths are, start formulating that idea. If you want to be a vegan chef, start flooding social media with authentic content highlighting your strengths, and then see what resonates with people. Do they love your recipes? Your videos? Your photography?

At the intersection of your passion, your strength, and audience interest is the kernel of a business you love.

019: Eric & Chris Martinez | Coming Back From The Edge Apr 16, 2018
    Show notes

Eric and Chris Martinez are serial entrepreneurs, international best-selling authors, and twins. Together, they run Dynamic Duo Training, host the Dynamic Lifestyle Podcast, and help others live a more dynamic lifestyle.

These two are rocking it right now, but getting there wasn’t easy – they had to stumble through a really dark path before they found the way.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [4:30] The 3:00 AM conversation that changed the Martinez brothers’ lives (and the dark period that followed)
    • [6:45] The turning point in their lives
    • [7:40] Dealing with negative emotions & the fitness pendulum swing
    • [9:00] Tai Lopez’s $25,000 mastermind
    • [15:50] The truth about building a business online & the darkest time in the Martinez’s business
    • [20:20] The bad habits and behaviors that Eric and Chris are currently working on
    • [25:00] What Eric & Chris are currently obsessed with, outside of work
    • [31:15] Relationships & business
    • [33:00] How a morning routine helps you look better, feel better, and be healthier
    • [35:00] How Cole Hatter inspired the Martinez brothers to travel to Mexico to help orphans (and why they continue to give back)
    • [38:45] Advice for someone starting an online business

    A Life-Changing Night

Eric & Chris were only 17 when, just three days before Christmas, a chaplain and highway patrol officer knocked on their door. Their father had been killed in a car accident, “and from that moment our life pretty much turned around in a 360.”

They lost their father, and as a result it felt like they lost part of their mother. Ultimately, they lost their role models.

The Martinez brothers realized they were going down a dark path, and they were lucky enough to meet their first mentor. He taught them the science behind fitness and body composition, and that really laid the foundation for their careers.

    A Life-Changing Mastermind

The Martinez brothers really took mentorship to the next level when they joined Tai Lopez’s mastermind. They had to offer up a whopping $25,000 to join – it was scary, but it felt like the step they needed to take.

And, in the end, “it was probably one of the best investments we’ve ever made.”

It didn’t teach them one strategy to completely transform their business, but it did completely transform their mindset.

“The mindset we acquired from Tai Lopez’s mastermind is just relentless, it’s unstoppable. Nothing is going to stop us from attaining our vision and impacting the world in what we’re set out to do.”

    The New Era of Fitness

If you’re an entrepreneur putting health on the backburner, then Eric & Chris Martinez have a message for you: STOP!

“Put health at the forefront. After that, you can focus on your wealth, your love, and your happiness… but today, I see so many people putting their health on the backburner because they aren’t seeing some sort of ROI coming out of that.”

018: 3 Adult Mindset Tools We Implemented with Our Three-Year-Old | Fri-Date With The Wifey Apr 13, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Applying adult personal development strategies to your children

Today Kim and I are going to discuss creating meditation and gratitude practices for your children, teaching them to change their own state (Tony Robbins style), and how they can use power poses or affirmations to achieve more.

    Meditation & Gratitude

In addition to cleaning up and a bedtime story, our evening ritual includes a gratitude exercise. Every night our daughter shares three things that she’s grateful for. It’s a small thing, but we can tell she’s getting it.

Our intro to meditation was similarly simple: we just started by sitting down with her, crossing our legs, and putting our hands on our knees. Then we slowly started adding additional pieces of a meditation practice, including the Headspace app (both Headspace and Calm have a children’s section that include very short meditations). You don’t need to try getting your kid to sit still for 30 minutes to lay the foundation of a good meditation practice!

    Changing Your State

Our child was throwing a lot of tantrums, and we knew there had to be a better way to help than yelling at her or sending her to her room. One day, when she was upset, we tried something new: we asked her to take a handful of paper snowflakes, thrown them in the air, and make them snow.

She smiled, threw them in the air, and started laughing – it literally changed her state. And it’s important that you use the words “changing your state” when introducing this to your child because then, as an adult, you can add onto that.

    Power Poses & Affirmations

We brought our daughter to her first swim lessons last year, and after being dunked under water on the first day, she lost it and said she wouldn’t come back.

We decided to go for a hail mary here, giving her an affirmation and power pose, and it worked!

But what affirmation can you possibly use for a child? We asked who her favorite Disney character was, or her favorite character who had to overcome something difficult even though they were scared. She said Poppy from Trolls.

We taught her to stand up, put her hands on her hips, and say, “I am Poppy. I can do anything.” (She said, “I am Poppy. I can do everything,” but close enough!)

We’ve never had a problem getting in the pool since – and we can see she’s using it on her own!

If you’re consistent and you can get your children to practice these techniques, it will be part of their life and they will reproduce these actions naturally themselves.

017: A Word From The Dalai Lama | The Robb Review Apr 11, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: The paradox of our age

At the end of my yoga class the other day, my teacher read some powerful words written by the 14th Dalai Lama that really stuck with me:

We have bigger houses, but smaller families

    More conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees, but less sense

    More knowledge, but less judgement

    More experts, but more problems

    More medicines, but less healthiness.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour.

We built more computers to hold more information to hold more copies than ever, but less communication.

We have become long on quantity, but short on quality.

These are times of fast foods, but slow digestion

    Tall men, but short character.

    Steep profits, but shallow relationships.

It is a time where there is much in the window, but nothing in the room.

    - His Holiness the Dalai Lama

016: Dr. Emily A. Farkas | The Most Interesting Woman in the World Apr 09, 2018
    Show notes

Dr. Emily A. Farkas is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon who divides most of her time between performing heart surgeries in the U.S. and performing heart surgeries for free in underserved regions of the world (with a little time for climbing mountains, boxing, and off-roading on the side).

Dr. Farkas also holds the distinction of being the first woman to train as a heart surgeon at Yale University, has a day named in her honor in St. Louis (“Dr. Emily Farkas Day,” August 3rd), and was awarded the honorary status of a tribal “Chief” in Nigeria – which all adds up to one of the most interesting people in the world.

Words cannot express how long I’ve wanted to sit down and ask Dr. Farkas these questions, or how excited I am to share it with all of you.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [2:00] Emily’s dual interests of dance and medicine
    • [3:00] Attending Yale University
    • [5:10] Getting started with Crossroads Africa and humanitarian work
    • [6:50] Delivering a baby in Kenya before graduating medical school

    • [10:20] Contributing to the collective good with CardioStart
    • [17:00] Receiving the tribal title of “Chief” in Nigeria
    • [19:20] What it felt like the first time Emily had a human heart in her hands
    • [21:45] How we keep a heart beating during a transplant
    • [24:30] Emily’s pre-surgery routine and superstitions
    • [25:30] The scariest and most memorable surgery that Emily has performed
    • [27:45] Being zen in surgery and in life
    • [28:55] The typical personality of a heart surgeon
    • [30:40] How Emily was raised and what she recommends to other parents
    • [32:40] The most Emily has ever travelled in one week
    • [34:45] Emily’s favorite failure
    • [36:50] What’s giving Emily’s life fulfillment outside of medicine (spoiler: it’s exceptionally cool)
    • [39:10] The bucket list trips that Emily has taken.
    • [40:00] How Emily clears the chatter and drowns out the noise of the world
    • [40:25] The challenge of relationships
    • [42:30] The ONE thing that Emily implemented to help her feel better

    Humanitarian Adventures

Between Emily’s first and second years of medical school, she saw a poster for Crossroads Africa, an organization that assembled medical teams and brought them to places in need.

On her first of many humanitarian trips, she visited Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

“I delivered my first baby in Kenya. I think it really opened my eyes. We all think medicine sort of transcends the socio-economic status of a country, and I was just floored to see what was around me and what could be done.”

It was like nothing Emily had ever experienced before, and she realized that medicine isn’t all about the CT scans, MRIs, and excess we have in the U.S. – It is about the real fundamentals and helping those who need it most.

Emily then finished her medical training and, five years later, had an enviable and cushy job in St. Louis – what most surgeons hope and dream for while they’re in school.

But she looked at where she was headed – becoming the chief of a department – and that didn’t drive her or align with her goals. “I know what meant the most to me was when I was in these places and doing these missions with people who would walk for five days because there’s no access to healthcare… That moves me.”

There probably aren’t many other part-time heart surgeon, part-time humanitarian adventurers out there, so we’re lucky to have Emily.

    015: The 80/20 On My Nutrition & Training | Fri-Date With The Wifey Apr 06, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: Finding balance in my nutrition & training

I’m almost 52-years-old, and my body has gone through a number of stages in my adult life (we’re not talking about puberty… today). I’ve been overweight and a fitness competitor at different points in my life, and today I’ve found a healthy balance.

In our 30s, we were living it large – we basically started cheat day on Thursday – and I found myself larger as a result. Then, when I saw the men (some older than me at the time) in a fitness competition, I deconstructed what they were doing and completely transformed my fitness routine and diet.

I was walking around with a gallon of water, eating cold chicken and broccoli, and hating life – but I had great freakin’ abs.

Ultimately, though, I was exhausted every day… and then we had a baby. Kim, who used to be prepping my meals every weekend, had a lot less time and a lot more to do. Without that preperation, I started gaining weight again.

This is when I decided I needed to strike a better balance – I just wanted to feel good.

Kim taught me a new nutritional concept: 2 shakes, 2 snacks, and 1-2 meals daily. I keep track of all that in the same PUSH Journal that I mentioned last week, and that system makes getting good nutrition much easier for me.

So what does that 80/20 balance look like?

    • We’re making full meal-replacement shakes, not protein or sugar bombs.
    • To fill in the gaps, I’ve introduced vitamins into my diet.
    • We added a 24-48 hour fast, nutritionally supported, once or twice a month (we’ll dig deeper into this on a future episode).
    • Instead of spending hours in the gym, I do HIIT workouts and classes – because there’s a big difference between training with intention and intensity.
    • I still drink a lot of water (but I don’t carry around the plastic jug anymore).

I’m 52, but I still feel better than I did when I was 30 – and that’s what happens when you properly fuel your body.

014: Using A Push Goal as a Domino to Knock Down Your Other Goals | The Robb Review Apr 04, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: How to choose your goals & achieve them

Today you’ll learn what a push goal is, how selecting three 10-minute, daily actions will help you achieve your goal, and the exact system that I use to achieve my goals.

    What is a Push Goal?

If you accomplish a push goal, it will knock down all of your other goals – like the first domino in a line.

For example: If your list of goals includes putting a down payment on a house and buying a new car, your push goal might be making $150,000 in a year because it would allow you to accomplish both of those goals.

What daily actions will help you accomplish your push goal?

Start by brainstorming every possible thing you could do to accomplish your goal. Make an exhaustive list of every single thing you can think of, and leave no stones unturned.

If you start to get stumped, ask yourself questions: What would this look like if it were easy? Fun? Elegant? Anything you can do, any prompts you can give yourself, to get that data out.

After you are done brainstorming, identify three actions from the list that will take 10 minutes or less to accomplish. Add those three actions to the top of your planner or to-do list.

If you do those three actions every single day, it will transform your life (and probably in less time than you expect).

Having goals isn’t enough – you have to have a system in place to ensure they are accomplished.

You can do as I described above – putting the actions in your planner – or you can take it to the next level: Chalene Johnson’s SmartLife™ PUSH Journal. This is what I use, and it makes a tremendous difference.

013: Lori Harder | From the Depths of Darkness to Pure Bliss Apr 02, 2018
    Show notes

Lori Harder is a self-love expert, transformational speaker, cover model, the host of the Earn Your Happy podcast, and the author of the upcoming book A Tribe Called Bliss: Break Through Superficial Friendships, Create Real Connections, Reach Your Highest Potential.

Lori has overcome a number of obstacles that most of us will never have to face, and she’s come out on top every time. She’s an incredible person, and I’m pumped to share her powerful story and belief with all of you.

    In This Conversation We Cover:

    • [6:00] How Lori’s unique upbringing affects her perspective on spirituality and the world.
    • [9:30] Struggling with weight as a child (and overcoming it).
    • [11:45] Dealing with anxiety.
    • [17:30] Embracing “freedom” with bad habits.
    • [20:30] The dark night that changed Lori’s life.
    • [27:00] How Lori worked through her trauma.
    • [27:40] Lori’s manifested dreams for the future becoming a reality.
    • [38:10] The powerful belief that Lori has that most people don’t (and how she trained herself to believe it).
    • [40:40] Earning your happy.
    • [44:25] What Lori does for herself when she needs to feel better.

    The Darkness

Lori grew up in a very religious and restrictive family, exposed to a limited view of the world throughout much of her childhood. However, having that experience – and challenging it – has had a big impact on who Lori is today.

Whether it’s your religious beliefs or the belief that you are unhealthy due to “bad genetics,” it’s hard to believe anything different if you are only ever exposed to one view.

As a result of her environment, Lori was in fear all the time. When she met people with a different (and, at times, more loving) perspective of the world, she could not wrap her brain around some of the conflicting ideas… at first.

Being exposed to wildly different ideas and working through that inner conflict, ultimately, gave Lori “massive perspective.” She dug deep into herself and asked an important question: What feels right for me?

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the darkest time in Lori’s life.

After graduating, Lori bounced from a straight edge religious background to a party lifestyle. She met a lot of interesting people and it helped broaden her horizons, but she also picked up a number of unhealthy habits.

Then, one night in Cancun, she was separated from her best friend in a club. In her efforts to find her friend, Lori ended up in a cab outside of town. The man who brought her there intended to rob her and leave her there, and she struggled to fend him off for hours.

Then, she had a moment – “a crazy, clarifying moment” – and she knew what to say. She humanized herself, and she told the man that God knew what he was doing and would forgive him if he brought her back.

She drove back to town with a knife pressing against her neck, but she got back – and over the next few years, she started to transform her life.

    A Tribe Called Bliss

Today, all of the dreams that Lori manifested are coming true. It was a long, hard journey, but she’s starting to see the rewards.

Lori believes it’s important to share this journey with others, bumps and all, because then they can see how much intention and time goes into creating happiness and living your purpose.

It’s not always easy, and it takes daily planning, but anyone can do it!

If you want to dive deeper into Lori’s story and get a big dose of inspiration, you can pre-order A Tribe Called Bliss (releasing May 8, 2018). And in the meantime, you can check out the Earn Your Happy podcast today!

012: Crushing Limiting Beliefs Together | Fri-Date With The Wifey Mar 30, 2018
    Show notes

    Today’s Topic: Limiting beliefs

We all tell ourselves stories. Sometimes those stories drive us to do more than we’ve ever done before, but often they hold us back.

Those stories are limiting beliefs. Stories like, “I will never be successful when I grow up because I grew up in the projects of Queens and my dad was a truck driver.”

But when you interrupt the pattern of telling yourself that story, and you replace it with something else, you can achieve anything. Call BS on yourself: “The truth is, there are a number of people who came out of Queens, and whose dads were truck drivers, who have grown up to be some of the most successful people in the world.”

As you grow, and you shed some of your limiting beliefs, you will always bump up against new challenges and new limiting beliefs – so understand that this is a never-ending cycle.

We’re all going through this same journey, and it’s okay to enlist support; seek out personal development training, hire a coach, or find a like-minded community.

011: Using The Cycle Of Growth To Change Any Habit | The Robb Review Mar 28, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s Topic: How to change any habit

Today I’m going to discuss the 4 stages of the Cycle of Growth:

    1. Inception - Think New Year’s Day, you’ve just made a resolution, and you’re excited about changing… but you don’t really know what you’re up against.
    2. Deception - A few days in, shit starts to get real. Incorporating your new habit is becoming more difficult, the excitement is waning, and you’re running up against physical or psychological friction. Your unconscious might try to keep you safe by minimizing risks.
    3. Transformation - If you power through the stage of deception, you will start to see positive changes. But you also see the reality of your growing habit, and it’s not a habit yet, so you still have to actively think about incorporating this activity into your life.
    4. Identity - After you’ve gone through this process for weeks and weeks, you don’t have to think about incorporating this new activity anymore – you just do it.

All change goes through this process. You just have to know where you are on the spectrum and work through those stages.
