Getting Back Up with Hilary Coles of Hims & Hers Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

Hilary Coles launched Hims & Hers when, after moving from Canada to the US, she discovered that navigating the healthcare system isn’t nearly as simple as it could be. Through the companies, she has helped destigmatize both physical and mental health issues. She built the two brands from the ground up, and through them, she continues to make the experience of booking a doctor’s visit as accessible as possible across the country as telemedicine becomes the new norm.

Today you’ll hear how Hilary’s personal experience in healthcare impacted her decision to launch Hims & Hers. She discusses the magical experience of launching Hims, as well as one of the biggest challenges. She shares her most crucial piece of advice for making important decisions, noting that more urgent decisions require more deliberate consideration, not less. She talks about how Hims & Hers have pivoted over the past year to better meet the needs of customers. She shares exclusive insights into her exciting upcoming haircare collaboration and also tells how she’s staying grounded this year.

“Taking care of yourself changes the way you think about your future. It changes everything about yourself.”

This week on SocialFly’s Entreprenista Podcast:

    • How getting comfortable with a lot of responsibility helps instill a can-do attitude
    • Why high-pressure decisions need more thought behind them, not less
    • The importance of being transparent with your team
    • Tools to keep collaboration strong
    • The importance of getting up more times than you get knocked down

Building a Makeup Empire with Wendy Zomnir of Urban Decay Feb 22, 2021
    Show notes

Wende Zomnir began her career in marketing at the Leo Burnett Company. She loved it, but she hated the cold in Chicago. She moved to California where she continued working in marketing, but struggled to find fulfillment in her new job. She wanted to create and to be her own boss, so she started Urban Decay, where she set out to change how women look in makeup and brought her own spin to the world of color cosmetics.

Today, Wende joins us to talk about how she grew Urban Decay into the global beauty empire it is today through smart marketing tactics, groundbreaking formulas, and iconic products. She talks about how she discovered a passion for makeup at an early age and how her partnership with Sandy Lerner would change the color cosmetics industry. She tells about the early days of Urban Decay, and how they marketed their brand in a time before social media. She explains how she first built her team and shares her favorite interview question that helps her determine if someone is the right fit for the job. She talks about the impact of COVID-19 on her business, including the acceleration of virtual try ons. She shares her experience selling Urban Decay and talks about why she wishes she had predicted the bumps in the road that came with the transition. She explains how getting acquired helped Urban Decay reach its goal of becoming a global brand. She talks about balancing motherhood and business-building, and she takes some time to recognize the mentors that have helped her along the way. She fends off a rapid-fire Q&A and shares some tips for successfully striking a healthy work-life balance, noting the importance of making constant tiny adjustments.

“It's really easy as you get into makeup--it's a creative field--to be artistic, to want to be self-expressive, to put the brand out there. But it's also a business, so it's really important to run it like a business.”

Fresh Food and Feminism with Riana Lynn Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

Riana Lynn grew up in Chicago and, partway through graduate school, got interested in bringing more raw foods to her area. She had gotten into more general entrepreneurship in college, but healthy food is particularly important to her because a number of her family members suffer from chronic illnesses, which are much less common in regions where fresh and healthy food is the norm. She has founded many food-related companies since then, the most recent--and current--one being Journey Foods.

Today, Riana joins us to talk about her journey to Journey. She discusses her experience as a serial entrepreneur and what she’s learned from it. She takes us through the three pillars of the mission of Journey Foods. She tells us about some surprising characteristics she looks for in a new hire. She notes the twofold role of organization and communication in a successful business. She talks about the importance of making the early relationships in a company good ones, and she discusses the future of women in technology and entrepreneurship.

Financial Feminism with Alli McCartney Jan 25, 2021
    Show notes

Alli McCartney has spent her career climbing the corporate ladder in the male-dominated field of financial advising. She has held positions at both Lehman Brothers and JP Morgan Private Bank. Today, she’s the managing director at UBS. She devotes herself largely to destroying the taboo around talking about money, particularly the power dynamics it creates.

Alli joins us today to give a female perspective on finance. She speaks about her past experiences, talks about the need for a safe space to discuss investing, and discusses the gender discrepancy in financial education. She calls for an open talk about money and lists the changes she’d like to see in the education system that would help bring this about. Solving Problems with Leslie Voorhees Means Jan 11, 2021
    Show notes

When Leslie Voorhees Means was looking for a wedding dress, she was disappointed to find outrageous prices and a relative lack of customization options. At the time, she worked in engineering and manufacturing. She wasn’t an entrepreneur, but she knew the problem needed a solution, so she stepped up to provide it. Today, Leslie and her husband are co-owners of Anomalie, an online wedding dress experience that allows brides to customize their wedding dresses at a fraction of the price of brick-and-mortar equivalents.

This week Leslie joins me to talk about the experience and what it’s taught her. She covers her thought process in starting the business, what she considered the biggest risks to be, what she’s learned about entrepreneurship, COVID’s impact on her business, and what she considers to be most important. She offers her thoughts on the importance of trust, working with your significant other, company culture, work-life balance, being aware of your blind spots, and the role of perseverance and resilience. She also notes the key importance of direct communication both with customers and with other business founders.

“Great companies don’t launch. They just start.”
