Should You Drink Water With Your Meal or Not? Jan 12, 2020

In this podcast, Dr. Berg answers the question if should you be drinking water when you eat food. The thought is when you drink too much water, it will dilute the hydrochloric acid in the stomach and is going to weaken the ability to digest food. The purpose of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is to trigger the enzymes to primarily help digest protein, absorb minerals, and kill off microbes.

If you are going to drink water on your meal, add apple cider vinegar to help you keep the pH where it needs to be. Avoid adding calcium carbonate or drinking alkaline water to the meal because it will dilute it. But then, what’s more important is what you are eating or the quality of food you are consuming, and don’t force yourself to drink a lot of water especially when you ate protein because potentially, it can also dilute the HCL and weaken the ability to break down protein. If you are doing a salad with a meal or combining it with protein, you may find that you are thirstier at the end of the meal because a lot of the fiber attracts water and it gels up in the colon, so the body will tell you to drink a little more.

If you have a weak digestive system or your stomach isn’t that strong with a good enough acid, don’t go drink too much water, and start to build it up with betaine hydrochloride, apple cider vinegar, or apple cider vinegar pills.

In this podcast, Dr. Berg talks about SIBO and intermittent fasting. SIBO means Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth - a condition where you have too much bacteria in the wrong place and normally, the bacteria should be in the large intestine. Eating fiber, probiotics, or taking antibiotics could make this condition worse.

Migratory Motor Complex is a system in the body that has the cleaning effect of all the leftover food and bacteria, and pushes them into the large intestine between meals. This process is controlled by motilin, which is also triggered by bile salts. Bile salts are made by the liver and are stored in the gallbladder.

How Many Nuts Can You Eat on Keto? Jan 10, 2020
    Show notes

Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course!

In this podcast, Dr. Berg answers the question of how many nuts are too many while you are doing keto (ketogenic diet). Consuming too many nuts could cause bloating or gas. Here are some reasons why.

    1. You need more bile production when you consume more fat.

Eating too much fat, too quickly (especially nuts), irritates the digestive system, especially around the gallbladder and pancreas.

    2. Nuts have certain anti-nutrients and chemicals that can irritate certain parts of the digestive system, specifically the bile duct.

If you are predisposed to kidney stones, certain nuts do have high oxalates. Germinating is the process where you soak the nut in the water overnight, rinsing it out and drying it out in the oven so when you consume them, it is easier to digest. Consuming raw nuts is harder for the immune system.

Recommendation: Do not consume more than ¼ of a cup of nuts per meal, and do not consume more than 1 tbs. of nut butter per meal.

In this podcast, Dr. Berg talks about leaky bladder and other problems with urination. These conditions are all related to neurogenic bladder. The bladder is controlled by the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system, which also controls most of the valve in the body and the tone of the entire bladder itself.

    Neurogenic Bladder

    • Frequency of Urination

    • Urgency

    • Retention

    • Leaky from Cough and Laughter

If you are a diabetic, your risk of having a leaky bladder goes up by 200% because you lose one of the most important nutrients that supports the autonomic nervous system called B1 or thiamine. Deficiency in B1 could affect the nerves of the body and also the autonomic nervous system.

Recommendation: Take B1 or the whole B complex in the form of nutritional yeast.
