EP55: Car Buying Tips During Divorce with Tina McKandes May 24, 2019
    Show notes

Car buying can be very stressful especially while going through divorce but with the right techniques, it can be easier. Tina McKandes, Director of Internet Operations at Boucher Automotive Group, has been in the industry for 25 years. Helping women find their perfect vehicle fit resonates with Tina having been through the divorce process herself. She knows the importance of educating yourself enough in order to make informed decisions. In this podcast, she expresses the importance of doing your research, knowing what features are important to you, and having confidence and flexibility in expressing your needs and timeline.

"Be armed with information, regardless of what it is." – Tina McKandes

98% of people do online research prior to coming into a dealership. The customer journey starts and stops at various different areas depending on what your situation is. The approach that Tina takes is providing the guest with all of the information. They first evaluate your needs. It's important to be willing to be a little bit open and vulnerable so that the dealership can give you the best options for you and your situation. Yes, there are still some experiences that are not so great at other dealerships; however, you will find that there are some that will train on "customer first". At Boucher, they create a new experience for women who are considering purchasing a new vehicle, taking on the current vehicle, and evaluating leases.

Pick a dealership that you feel comfortable at. The dealership should be looking at filling your needs with the best vehicle available based upon the information that you already collected from your personal end…budget, 3 most important things you need on the car…then the dealership gives you the selections that they feel fit the best based on those needs. Have confidence in trying to fill your needs but also have some flexibility in options that may be outside of the box for you. Allow yourself the time and don't feel rushed. The dealership should be paying attention to YOUR needs, working at YOUR pace, and you should be working with someone you like and that will go the extra mile for you.

So, what can women do to prepare before they even go to the dealership? First, figure out where you are starting at, everyone will start at a different point. Second, begin to use your online resources and start to talk to your local lenders. Third, figure out your budget (Not sure where to start, check out our 10 Simple Steps to Creating Your Beautiful Budget online course ($47)).

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Tips, ideas, and thoughts that you can take to your dealership
    • Trends of negotiation and where car buying is now
    • What you can do to prepare
    • Lending
    • Divorce and your credit score
    • Establishing car credit history
    • Role of the dealership

EP54: Having Success in Flexwork with Kathryn Sollmann May 10, 2019
    Show notes

What is your cash flow going to look like post-divorce? This is a common question that most women going through divorce have. Whether you are going back into the workforce or if you need/want to make changes in your career, Kathryn Sollman of 9 Lives for Women discusses the 6 different types of flexwork that can better blend your professional and family life. You have many options to work. You can define what success is. You have a voice in what you want to be doing in your next chapter.

The six different types of flexwork are:

    1. Professional full-time – today these can be flexible in terms of where you work and what your schedule is
    2. Flexible part-time – you can also work in a more mid-to-senior level in a professional way
    3. Telecommuting – working from home or even a co-working space
    4. Job Shares – less frequent than other options but are still growing, you share a job with someone who has complementary skills and together you share the responsibility of one full-time employee
    5. Freelance – independent work, on your schedule, you get to choose what you want to do
    6. Independent Consultant – usually set up an LLC, this occurs typically when you want to have a specialty (i.e., marketing), a business built on your own terms

It is important to realize that you need to give yourself a break and not feel that you must aim for the C-Suite and become this ultra-career person. You get to define how you want to work, what success means to you, what your ambition is. This should all be in the context of your long-term financial security. There are many ways to get to long-term financial security and they do not all involve being the head of the department.

So how and where do you find flexwork opportunities whether you are currently working or heading back into the workforce? Well…it is all about being able to ask. 80% of companies now have some sort of flexibility even if you cannot see it. If you are returning to work, the important thing is to know what you want. It is important to ask during the interview about the opportunity to have some flexibility in the job. It creates a dialog and lets the future employer know that you are interested in flexwork. If you are already working a job and now want it to be flexible, you need to do your ask in a more professional pitch method. You need to really lay out how it will benefit the company. Kathryn outlines how to put together a professional pitch in her book as well as providing coaching services to help you through this.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The six different kinds of flexwork
    • How to ask for flexibility in a current job or find it elsewhere
    • The fact that today there is no hard stop to work at age 65
    • Women who return to work in their 40s or 50s still have a long runway for work – and the ability to build financial security

EP53: Talking About Your Inner Mean Girl with Dr. Diane Garrison May 03, 2019
    Show notes

You all know that inner voice that tells you that you are not good enough in one way or another. That voice that is inside your head that is constantly beating you up that makes you feel guilty, less than, and underperforming all the time. It is like having a really bad roommate. In this episode, Dr. Diane Garrison, a licensed psychologist and a women's empowerment coach, discusses how we first need to recognize that we internally talk to ourselves in a mean girl manner, then finding the understanding that you are not flawed. This type of thinking is something that was programmed into you when you were a kid. Society has led women to believe that they need to work harder and longer in order to prove that they have even half the value of men. Women have been taught that feelings are weaknesses and therefore are taught to be cast aside in order to get things done.

Giving yourself compassion when you are hurting is a skill that can be learned. "It is a part of me but it doesn't have to run me." The center of this is really learning how to take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. Self-neglect is happening a lot even when you know you are doing it to yourself. Pay attention to what is going on inside of you instead of pushing past it when you are hurting, sad, tense – turn towards those negative feelings with gentleness – the same kind of gentleness you would give to someone else that is hurting.

Having a support team of objective, heart-centered people is important. Recognize that you do not have to go through these challenges alone. Therapy is an incredibly safe container where you can let it all hang out. You can be real. When you can talk freely about the things that are weighing heavily on you, you can gain clarity and confidence. Coaching takes you past the place of functional to self-actualization and self-awareness.

Diane is offering a free 30-minute "Get Clear" consultation when you mention this podcast to really identify what you desire to change in your life and what is stopping you.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Why are we, as women, so hard on ourselves (why do we have such a healthy "inner mean girl")
    • How we can soften the inner critic and make friends with that "inner mean girl"
    • How we can build self-compassion and self-acceptance
    • How to calm your "inner mean girl"
    • Facing your limiting beliefs so you can transform them
    • I'm suffering and it's okay. I'm human.
    • The importance of surrounding yourself with objective people
    • Acknowledging your self-worth

EP52: Having Faith in Your Self-Discovery with Pam Drzewiecki Apr 26, 2019
    Show notes

In this episode, Pam reminds you to live your life on purpose and to not be driven by the circumstance in your life but remember that those circumstances are your hinge points in order to get to your purpose. It is part of your journey. If you know what your purpose is, it is easier to get through the circumstances. You need to take the emotion out of decision making and part of that is allowing yourself to let go of the physical things that may hold sentimental value. Things that you just place on a shelf but are not going to use. Pam tells us a great way to hold on to these emotional keepsakes without carrying the baggage with you. When going through a major life change, we tend to hold onto the guilt that is associated with it, remember that it is a fresh start. Move forward and let go of the rest.

When we are going through changes in our lives, part of the process is knowing who we actually are. Who we are and how we show up today is going to affect the person that we will ultimately be in the future. Take action that works best for you that will bring you confidence. Faith of knowing your next step is going to be determined by how you are today. All of your actions have consequences good or bad. If you are conscious about knowing who you are so you can show up as the best version of yourself, will help you through separation, divorce, and beyond. Part of the process of being your best self is allowing yourself to grieve, even if you are the one who initiated the divorce process.

You need to allow yourself to grieve and be in that moment and know you don't have to make a decision right then about the goal for the rest of your life. Acknowledge the parts in those grieving moments that are going to allow you to move forward. Keep your ears and eyes open around you and do not form the story before you know what the actual information is. We get attached to drama around things and getting caught up in the drama keeps the drama going. Pam Drzewiecki is the Owner and Founder of Powerful Purpose and Powerful Purpose Planning Systems - taking the craziness out of everything. Resources, tools, and coaching videos to stay present and focused in a multi-tasking world. Pam is also a Business & Life Coach that helps women be more, do more and make more with confidence and no-guilt. It is possible.

    • Faith and self-discovery allow you to live your best life
    • Do not be blind on how your life is now . . . either be in gratitude or make a change. That goes for your personal life, business life, or career life.
    • Buying yourself small gifts is a reminder of the positive path you are on
    • A great way to part with items of sentimental value
    • The importance of grieving through the process regardless of who started the process

EP51: Walking Through the Journey of Divorce with Julie Hoelle Apr 19, 2019
    Show notes

"I was suffering in my marriage and I believe my partner was too. However, when I would talk about leaving, it was so scary to imagine what life would look like in the future." Have you had a partner that would make you feel like you would not be able to financially support yourself and/or your kids if you left them? "I never imagined when I got married that it would end in divorce." You just don't know what your future will look like and having the facts helps you make decisions for your future. Finding happiness in the core of who you are, allowing yourself to grieve through the process, and allowing yourself to find joy and a healthy mindset will pave the way to building your confidence. Women are good at making decisions if they have all the facts. Sometimes we feel it must be so terrible that we have no other option before we leave, but that is not always the case. We have choices.

In this episode, Julie talks about her journey of making the tough decisions in order to take back control in her life. By surrounding herself with objective experts that helped guide her through the process of leaving, Julie was able to make the tough decisions that ultimately led her to realize the greatest gift in all of it – feeling empowered, becoming a homeowner on her own, and creating new and amazing memories with her daughters in her own space.

A lot of times people are afraid to engage more than just their attorney in this process. However, it is valuable to have a different perspective, different areas of expertise that can come alongside you to help you through this process. At the end of the day, it is about what the money means versus what is in your bank account. Having the facts about your finances can make a huge difference and step-by-step, building up your confidence. You must be able to trust your gut. Interview your experts to find the ones that will listen to you and help you navigate through this time in your life. You deserve that. You do not have to go through this alone.

Julie Hoelle is a working mother, yogi and community volunteer. She has a walk-the-walk, talk-the-talk perspective on making the decision to divorce and allowing yourself the space to believe in yourself, to be happy, and to be financially confident.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • How to manage through the fear of leaving your marriage from a financial standpoint
    • How life will look post-divorce
    • Self-care and how to navigate and preserve what is important starts with making time for what is important to you
    • How seeking the RIGHT experts can help you through the tough decisions
    • The importance of understanding your own financial security
    • Knowing when to call it quits and finding the confidence to move forward
    • Closing out the noise
    • The importance of maintaining your support system
    • Being open to trusting that it will be okay. You do not need to go through this alone.

"If when we get into a difficult situation, our will or courage lessens, and we fall into the laziness of feeling inferior. Thinking that we could not possibly accomplish such a difficult task, this diminishment of will cannot protect us from any suffering. It is important to generate courage corresponding to the size of the difficulties." - Dalai Lama

We, as women, can do so much more than we give ourselves credit for. When we really need to dig down to fight for something that we truly believe in, we can do it.

EP46: Good Divorce with Attorney Diane Mader Mar 15, 2019
    Show notes

Divorce is painful but it doesn't have to be a disaster. Societal standards hinder us from having a good divorce. People shy away from this notion because they think it's uncommon. Having divorce doesn't mean you're happy to have it. It also doesn't mean you've failed or you did something wrong, but what does a good divorce really mean?

Dianne Mader is an attorney who has practiced divorce law in Wisconsin for more than 30 years. She has also mediated divorce cases for 25 years. Through the years of working with divorce clients, she's gained deep compassion for women going through a divorce.

Her commitment to making divorce a transformative experience for women led her to train as a certified life coach. Ever since then, she has used that opportunity to coach women before, during, and after their divorce.
