Interview with Nazim Hudda on Finding Bargain Buys in the Hobby and Why He Doesn't Regret Selling His Stephen Curry NT Logoman RPA Early; Picking NHL and NBA Championship Teams This Season Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 89 - Clark, Hyung, and John make their picks for which team is going to win the NHL and NBA Championship as well as the MVP for both leagues.

Then Clark welcomes Nazim Hudda (hudda123_cards on IG and admin for the NBA Hotspot Worldwide Facebook Group) who shares what he looks for when it comes to buying basketball cards and how he finds bargain buys. He also shares a cool story about once shagging balls for a young Stephen Curry (when his dad Dell Curry played for the Toronto Raptors) and how that lead to him collecting Curry basketball cards early including acquiring a National Treasures Logoman Rookie Patch Autograph Card for relatively cheap – but then selling it early for a very good reason (the same card could easily fetch six-figures today).

Discussing Different Points of View About Prospecting in the Hobby (from an ESPN Article); Playing "Target Price" and Guessing How Low Some Iconic Cards Could Fall To Within a Year Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 88 - Clark, Hyung, and John open the show talking about the recent $3.72 million sale of the iconic Honus Wagner T206 baseball card (PSA 1.5) and discuss whether investing in vintage baseball cards is the way to go during this bear market or if the Wagner T206 is in a category of its own. For this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys go over an ESPN article titled "New York Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez stars in a bold new world of sports card prospecting" which has quotes from a few key players in the hobby such as high-end collector/investor Shyne150, Ken Goldin of Goldin Auctions, and Jesse Craig from PWCC. They go over some of their quotes in the story and comment on whether they agree with their opinions on the upside (and downside) of prospecting in the hobby. Then in a new segment called "Target Price," Clark gives Hyung and John a list of five iconic cards that have been trending downwards in value. Then Clark throws out a dollar amount for each GOAT-type card and they debate whether it'll hit that target price within a year. And if it does, the guys answer if they would buy the card at that target price. Some cards discussed include the Mike Trout Topps Update Rookie Card, Luka Doncic Silver Prizm Rookie Card, and the LeBron James Topps Chrome Rookie Card. Finally, as usual, the show ends with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Mike Trout 2009 Bowman Chrome Trout Refractor Autograph Card (BGS 9.5/10) vs. LeBron James 2003 Topps Chrome Refractor (PSA 9); Better prospect to collect - Anthony Volpe vs. Jasson Dominguez; Luka Doncic 2018 Prizm Rookie Sensations (sticker auto; PSA 10) vs. Luka Doncic 2018 Optic Orange /199 (PSA 10). -------------------------------- CONNECT WITH US! Which QBs Were We "Dead Wrong" About After 5 Weeks?; Choosing Which MLB Players to Target in the Off-Season as Sports Card Investments Oct 14, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 87 - Clark, Hyung and John start the show with a mini "Dead Wrong" segment as they evaluate some of the top tier QBs who have not performed as well as many had anticipated during the pre-season. After Week 5, the guys discuss whether they're pivoting from buying cards this season of Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Herbert or Joe Burrow, or whether they believe any of them are still worth investing in.

Then Clark, Hyung and John borrow an idea from Scottie B. and choose which MLB players might be good off-season targets as card investments for 2023, and why.

Interview with Bryan Denison (aka Cajun_Cardboard) on Making Friends in the Hobby and How He Completed the 1986 Fleer Basketball PSA 10 Set; Is Panini and Reebok Shoe Collaboration a Cheap Gimmick? Oct 11, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 86 - Clark, Hyung, and John talk about the recent announcement of the Panini America and Reebok collaboration featuring three “Prizm” parallel iterations of “A.I.”’s historic Question basketball shoe. They debate whether it's a cheap gimmick or a cool collaboration between a card company and a more traditional retailer.

Then for this episode, the guys interview Bryan Denison (aka Cajun Cardboardon YouTube) who is able to juggle being a real estate attorney as well as a father of seven kids while creating consistent hobby content for his YouTube and Instagram channels (and why he decided to become a content creator instead of just a sports card collector/investor). He also shares how he was able to complete the iconic 1986 Fleer Basketball set (all graded PSA 10) and how much he initially turned down from a potential buyer.

They end the episode with "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Fernando Tatis Jr. 2016 Bowman Chrome Refractor Autograph (BGS 9.5/10) vs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 2016 Bowman Chrome Refractor Autograph (BGS 9.5/10); PSA 10 vs PSA 9 with IP autograph; and Cade Cunningham National Treasures /99 RPA (PSA 8) vs. three Cade Cunningham Blue Prizm Rookie Cards /199 (PSA 10).

Why No Hobby Love for These Great Players?; Listing Hockey Players Whose Cards Might Do Well This Year; Playing Overrated/Underrated on "Non-Rookie Cards" Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 85 - Clark, Hyung, and John open the show talking about the upcoming NHL season and which players and rookies to look out for as potential good buys before the season begins this week.

In this week's Hobby Headlines segment, the guys revisit an old topic and discuss which athletes get no hobby love despite their greatness. Some of the players mentioned include Manny Machado, Nolan Arenado, Lamar Jackson, Nikita Kucherov, and Aleksander Barkov.

Then they move on to the popular "Overrated/Underrated" segment. This week, the category is "non-rookie cards" (ie. second-year cards of players; first-year cards of player on new team).

Finally, Clark, Hyung and John end the episode with "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Aaron Judge 2013 Bowman Chrome Autograph Card vs. Shohei Ohtani 2018 Bowman Chrome (hitting) Autograph Card; Better long term investment – Ultra modern Goodwin champions exquisite patch autos vs. Skybox Universe PMGs; Zion Williamson Blue Prizm Rookie Card (PSA 10) vs. Ja Morant Blue Prizm Rookie Card.

Does Polishing a Card With Any Kind of Substance Mean a Card is Altered?; Few Observations at Recent Local Card Show and Whether Dealers Will Continue to Sell Way Above Comps Sep 30, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 84 - Clark shares a few observations from the recent local card show such as many dealers still pricing their cards way above comps and buying cards at heavily discounted prices, and discuss with Hyung and John whether that will change at the upcoming major Sports Card Expo in Toronto this November.

Then the guys get into a contentious issue within the hobby – whether cleaning/polishing a card with any kind of substance constitutes a card being "altered." And they weigh in on whether they have a problem with it or if it's fair game.

Debating When To Sell and When To Hold in a Bear Sports Card Market; What's your FOMO Level on Josh Allen, Aaron Judge?; Discussing 2022 Topps Chrome Short Print Debacle Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 83 - Clark, Hyung, and John give their thoughts on the whole 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball short print debacle and the solution by Topps to issue a special two-card silver pack giving collectors a chance at hitting the missing short prints.

Then in this week's Hobby Headlines segment, the guys talk over a few scenarios in which it's better to sell in this bear market or if it's better to hold your current cards and ride it out. Scenarios include whether you're currently holding the bag on some junk slabs, or if you bought high on a stud player who hasn't performed well this season, or if you bought high on a rare card that's seen a double-digit drop in value.

Then in a new segment called "FOMO Level Check," Clark lists several athletes who have been on fire as of late with their respective card prices increasing (ie. Josh Allen, Aaron Judge), and Hyung and John give their FOMO rank from 1 (no FOMO at all) to 10 (max FOMO, ready to buy high).

Finally, Clark, Hyung and John end the episode with "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: LeBron James 2003 Topps Chrome (PSA 9) vs Luka Doncic 2018 Panini Select Courtside (PSA 10); Better investment - Michael Jordan 1984 Star Rookie Card (BGS 7) vs Michael Jordan 1986 Fleer Rookie Card (PSA 9); Juan Soto 2016 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autograph Card (PSA 10) vs Aaron Judge Topps Heritage Real One Autograph Rookie Card (PSA 10).

Do These Sports Headlines Impact Card Values of Athletes Currently in the Spotlight?; Weighing in on 2023 Topps Baseball Card Design; Playing Overrated/Underrated on Popular Parallels Sep 20, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 82 - Clark, Hyung, and John look ahead briefly and give their opinion on the new design of the 2023 Topps Baseball set (see the design here) as well as discuss what they think about the high price tag of the upcoming 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball hobby boxes (this episode was recorded before Topps addressed that the planned bonus short print parallels of five rookie subjects were incorrectly not included in the collation of the hobby boxes.)

Moving on to this week's Hobby Headlines segment, the guys go over some recent sports headlines involving some athletes and discuss whether they think it will have any impact on their card values. The headlines discussed include Albert Pujols chasing 700 home runs; Aaron Judge breaking Roger Maris' 61 home runs in a single season record; Mike Trout hitting home runs in seven consecutive games; Serena Williams retiring at the U.S. Open; Karl Anthony Towns brimming with confidence declaring he's one of the best offensive players to have played the game.

Then they play Overrated/Underrated with the theme focused on parallels and refractors including: Tiger Stripe Prizms, Tie-Dye Parallels, Cracked Ice Parallels, and Printing Plates.

Finally, Clark, Hyung and John end the episode with "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps #700 Rookie Card Image vs. Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Update #US1 Rookie Card Image; Luka Doncic 2018 Blue Prizm /199 Rookie Card (PSA 9) vs. a Luka Doncic Flawless non rookie year patch autograph card; Justin Herbert Light Blue 2020 Prizm Rookie Card vs. Justin Herbert Silver 2020 Prizm Rookie Card.

    Show notes

EPISODE 81 - Clark, Hyung, and John start this Friday episode discussing whether the Derek Jeter-backed business Arena Club that offers another platform to buy/sell sports cards as well as provide an authentication/grading/vaulting service is too late in the game.

Then they move on to give their overreaction takes after Week 1 of the NFL season on some of the QBs who didn't perform that well, and indicating based on small sample size whether they're buying their cards or dumping them. The QBs discussed in this episode include: Dak Prescott, Mac Jones, Russell Wilson, Joe Burrow, Aaron Rodgers, and Kyler Murray.
