How Would You Spend $1,000 on Sports Cards in Bear Market to Flip for Gains; Podcast Listener Shares Positive Experience with SGC Despite Card Damage Jul 26, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 70 - Clark, Hyung, and John give kudos to SGC after a podcast listener messaged them about a positive experience with the grading company despite admitting they damaged his card while in their possession.

The guys move on to the Hobby Headlines segment where they each answer what they would do with $1,000 in this bear market to maximize their investment in sports cards. Some suggestions included buying raw cards and then grading them, targeting a couple of $500 slabbed cards and holding, or just putting it all in for a single card currently worth $1,000 based on high conviction of the player.

Next the guys introduce a new segment called "Who's That Player?" where they're given two sets of stats and they try to guess which player the stats belong to. And then once revealed, they would give their opinion on who they would rather invest in.

They end the episode as usual with "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Chrome Update HMT1 Gold /50 PSA 9 ($1,171 last sold on eBay) vs Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 2019 Bowman Chrome Gold Auto /50 PSA 9 ($713 last sold on eBay); Topps Chrome Basketball Gold vs. Panini Prizm Gold; Michael Jordan 2008-09 Upper Deck Premier Preeminence Autograph Card (#22/25) (PSA 10/10) (17K at Goldin) vs. Michael Jordan 1986 Fleer PSA 9 RC (18K on ebay).

    Show notes

EPISODE 68 - Clark, Hyung, and John kick off the show with their theories on how the fake dual autograph Topps Definitive card of Randy Arozarena and Austin Meadows actually got signed (and whether they would trade that card in for a replacement card plus a new hobby box).

Then the guys get into the Hobby Headlines segment discussing the recent hobby box releases and their general thoughts on the set as well as whether it's worth the rip. The boxes reviewed include Topps Stadium Club Baseball (still majorly under appreciated?), Topps Definitive Baseball (worth the high price tag?), plus the long awaited 2021-22 Panini Prizm Basketball Set and the 2021-22 SP Authentic Hockey Set (worth the wait?).

Next the guys do Round 2 of the "Overrated / Underrated" segment where they are given five types of cards (ie. Quad Color Patch Card; Non-Numbered Parallel Cards; Non-Rookie Patch Autograph Cards) and choose whether each one is overrated or underrated, and explain why.

And last, the guys play "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Julio Rodriguez 2019 Bowman Chrome Autograph Card (BGS 9.5) vs Wander Franco 2019 Bowman Chrome Autograph Card (BGS 9.5); Better Hockey Card Investment - Johnny Gaudreau vs. Evgeni Malkin; Cade Cunningham Panini Silver Prizm ($500) vs. Scottie Barnes Panini Silver Prizm ($400).

Looking Into Vintage Sports Cards Trending Up; Suggestions for BGS to Improve Its Service and Regain Marketshare; Playing Overrated/Underrated on 5 Types of Sports Cards Jul 12, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 67 - Clark, Hyung, and John give some suggestions off the top of this episode to Beckett Grading Services on how the company can improve its service and regain some market share. Some of the advice include offering faster turnaround times at lower service prices (ie. compete more against SGC as opposed to PSA) and allocate some of its budget to marketing its brand a little more.

Then the guys talk vintage sports cards, which are holding its value relatively well during this bear market while all other sports card markets are trending down. They offer a few of their favorite picks (other than the Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps rookie card) that they would love to add to their own personal collection both as a collector and investor.

Next the guys introduce a new segment simply called "Overrated / Underrated." For this episode, they are given five types of cards (ie. Dual Sticker Autograph Cards, Panini Prizm Football Manga Insert Cards, IP Autograph Cards) and choose whether each one is overrated or underrated, and explain why.

Lastly, as usual, the guys play "Pick One" where they name two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Mickey Mantle 1951 Bowman #253 (PSA 6 at $36k) vs. Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps #311 (PSA 2.5 at $48k); More likely to win another ring - Stephen Curry or Kevin Durant; Trae Young 2018 National Treasures RPA /99 RAW (11K last sold) vs. Zion Williamson 2019 Panini Prizm Blue Parallel /199 PSA 10 (11K last sold).

Take These Cards Off the Watch List in Sports Card Bear Market; Critiquing the $2.4M Sale of Lebron Triple Logoman; Chasing GOATs Part 2 Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 65 - Clark, Hyung, and John first discuss whether Conn Smythe and Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar (as the MVP of the 2022 NHL playoffs and best defenseman, respectively) of the 2022 Stanley Cup champion team – the Colorado Avalanche – is worth investing in right now. Then also off the top of the episode, they get into what they thought about the recent $2.4M sale of the highly publicized Lebron James Triple Logoman Panini Flawless card (and whether the $2.1M sale of the Lebron James Exquisite Collection rookie patch autograph card numbered to 23 with a BGS 8.5 grade was a better deal).

For this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys name some cards or type of cards they are no longer actively buying because of the current sports card bear market (in other words, which sports cards are they taking off their watch list). That includes no longer targeting injured stud players who are expected to come back soon as well as lower grade cards and flagship cards of hot prospects.

Then just as in last week's episode, they revisit a segment called "Chasing GOATs" where they compare the highest sale price of some iconic GOAT cards to the last sold price, and talk about if it's a good time to invest in these GOAT players at current prices or if they believe prices could go down even further. The cards discussed include the Stephen Curry Topps Rookie Card (PSA 10); Wayne Gretzky O Pee Chee Rookie Card (PSA 8); Tom Brady Bowman Chrome Base Rookie Card (BGS 9.5); and Derek Jeter SP Foil Rookie Card (BGS 9.5).

And they close off the show with the weekly segment, "Pick One" where they put up two cards each and subsequently debate which one they rather invest in. The pairs for this week include: Paul Goldschmidt 2011 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Card (BGS 9.5 True Gem) for $380 vs. Yordan Alvarez 2018 Bowman Chrome Autograph Rookie Card (BGS 9.5 True Gem) for $600; Jayson Tatum vs. Devin Booker; Stephen Curry Topps Chrome Rookie Card /999 (BGS 9) for $7,500 vs. Kevin Durant Topps Chrome Refractor Rookie Card /1499 (PSA 10) for $7,500.

The guys then move on to this week's Hobby Headlines where they discuss some recent sales of sports cards sold at relatively low prices (ie. They segue into a new segment called "Chasing GOATs" where they compare the highest sale price of some iconic GOAT cards to the last sold price, and talk about if it's a good time to invest in these GOAT players at current prices or if they believe prices could go down even further. The cards discussed include the Mike Trout 2011 Topps Update rookie card (PSA 10); Lebron James 2003 Topps Chrome rookie card (PSA 10); Patrick Mahomes 2017 Panini Prizm rookie card (PSA 10); and Connor McDavid 2015 Upper Deck Young Guns (PSA 10).

And as usual, they close off the show with the weekly segment, "Pick One" where they put up two cards each and subsequently debate which one they rather invest in. EPISODE 63 - Clark, Hyung and John open the episode with their thoughts on the recent news of Fanatics Collectibles hiring a new CEO (Mike Mahan) and what they think that means for the hobby moving forward.

Then the guys get into the main discussion of this Friday episode, which is that with 3 of the major sports leagues (NBA, NFL, and NHL) heading into the offseason and the state of the economy, if there is a double dip in prices as a result, which players are they looking to buy.
