Discussing Topps MVP Buyback Program and SGC Grading 2022 Bowman Chrome Cards for $9; Making World Cup Predictions; Playing "Quiz Show" and Guessing Current Hobby Trends Dec 06, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 98 - Clark, Hyung, and John make their World Cup predictions off the top of the show, and they discuss which players in the tournament might have seen a bump in their card values due to their performance at the World Cup.

Then in this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys react to two of the major hobby announcements made recently, which include: the Topps MVP Buyback Program that gives collectors a chance to redeem store credit at their local card shop if they find either an Aaron Judge or Paul Goldschmidt baseball card from the 2022 Topps Chrome set.

The other announcement was the partnership between SGC and Topps where any card from the 2022 Bowman Chrome baseball set could be graded by SGC for $9 US regardless of declared value and without a minimum number of cards to be submitted.

Then Clark, Hyung and John play "Quiz Show" – a new segment in which Clark asks a question about current hobby trends (ie. Which of the four major sports has seen the biggest decrease/increase in card value according to the CardLadder index?) and Hyung and John try to answer correctly.

Finally, as usual, the show ends with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Pete Rose 1963 Rookie Card vs. Barry Bond 1986 Tiffany Rookie Cards; Juan Soto Bowman Chrome Refractor Rookie Autograph Card /499 (BGS 9.5) vs. Juan Soto Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Base Card (PSA 10); Erling Haaland 2019 Topps Finest UCL Refractor (PSA 10) vs Kylian Mbappe 2017 Topps Chrome Refractor (PSA 10).

BONUS EPISODE: Chasing Julio Rodriguez in the 2022 Topps Chrome Logofractor Edition Box and Is It Worth the Rip? Dec 02, 2022
    Show notes

BONUS EPISODE: Clark, Hyung and John meet up at Yntegrity HQ to rip open a box of the now sold-out 2022 Topps Chrome Logofractor Edition Box in hopes of hitting the Julio Rodriguez logofractor baseball card (you can check out the video on YouTube at https://youtube.com/@fivecardguys !)

While they rip open the packs, the guys also talk about how much it cost for the 2022 Topps Chrome Logofractor Edition box, what it’s going for now on resale sites, and what other hits are in the set. They did happen to hit a couple of colored cards that were numbered...but just not the one they were hoping for!

What It'll Take for TAG Grading and New Grading Companies to Steal Marketshare from PSA, BGS, or SGC; Discussing Tech Services That Makes the Hobby Better; Which JRod Rookie Card is the Best? Nov 29, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 97 - Clark, Hyung, and John discuss the recent $3.1 million sale of the Luka Doncic National Treasures Logoman card and whether it was a steal and could be flipped for a bigger profit in the future or if the buyer was way too optimistic about Luka's generational talent and overpaid.

In this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys share what they think it would take for newer grading companies to steal significant market share from the big three (ie. PSA, BGS, SGC). And they also talk about their first impressions of TAG Grading and Arena Club, and how they like their chances of making a dent in the grading world.

Then Clark, Hyung and John play another round of Overrated/Underrated but this time with a "hobby tech" theme. Some of the hobby tech items discussed include CardLadder, Digital Showcase for your cards (ie. Arena Club); Center Stage app, and the Whatnot streaming/breaking platform.

Lastly, the show ends with a special Pick One submitted by loyal podcast listener SleepyInSeattle, who asks which of these three Julio Rodriguez rookie cards would you rather invest in: 2022 Topps Series 2 SP, 2022 Topps Chrome Logofractor or the 2022 Topps Chrome SP (from the silver pack)?

Ranking Hobby Pet Peeves from a Scale of 1 to 10 (ie. "Not Silver" or "eBay 1/1" in listing headings); Answering a Listener's Question about First Bowman Chrome Autograph Base Cards Nov 25, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 96 - Clark, Hyung and John answer a podcast listener's question off the top of the show who wanted to know if the guys preferred to invest in a baseball player's First Bowman Chrome autograph base card or the subsequent year's prospect autograph card but with a low serial number (ie. gold refractor).

Then the guys have a little fun ranking some hobby pet peeves from a scale of 1 (no bother at all) to 10 (huge pet peeve). Some of the pet peeves include eBay listings with "not silver" in the heading to show up on the silver prizm searches, and listings that say "eBay 1/1."

Proposing Ideas on How to Improve Live Card Shows During Bear Market; Choosing Which Trending Players (Both Up and Down) to Buy/Sell/Hold Nov 22, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 95 - Clark welcomes Hyung back to the podcast after being away for a couple of weeks to coach the Canada Junior National Baseball Team. Hyung gave an update on how the tournament went as well as some potential prospects he saw in action that might be more familiar to baseball card collectors in a few years if they continue to rake.

In this week's Hobby Headlines, Clark talks about his experience attending the recent Sports Card Expo in Toronto. The guys then discuss some general ideas on how to improve live card shows, especially during this bear market when many dealers aren't buying as actively as they did before (or doing so at 60% comps).

Then Clark and Hyung bring back the Buy/Sell/Hold segment going over a list of three players who are trending upwards in their card values (ie. Jalen Hurts; Justin Fields; Tyrese Maxey) and three players whose card values are crashing over the past month (ie. Spencer Torkelson; Wayne Gretzky; Cade Cunningham).

Lastly, the show ends with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bowman Chrome Refractor Rookie Autograph Card /499 vs. Yordan Alvarez Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Card; Trae Young Silver Prizm Rookie Card vs. Donovan Mitchell Silver Prizm Rookie Card.

Ideas On What to Set Collect on a Budget; Picking Low-Cost "Worth A Flyer" Candidates to Invest In The Hobby; Guessing Luka Doncic 1/1 Logoman Final Sale Price Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 94 - Clark, John, and Will take another stab at guessing the final sale price of another super high-end card – This time it's the Luka Doncic 1/1 Logoman that was up for auction on PWCC. They discuss whether getting it less than $4.6 million (which is what it sold for in March 2021) is a good deal or if it's crazy to buy high-end cards in this bear market.

Then in this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys talk about set collecting on a budget as a way to have fun in the hobby more as a collector than an investor (especially with current investments in sports cards being more risky during the bear market.) Some ideas of what fellow collectors could try to build a set in while some of the card prices are low include: insert card sets from the junk wax era for those who are nostalgic about the hobby; non-rookie patch autograph cards of players from your home country (ie. Canadian basketball players); and second- or third-year cards of stud players.

The guys then get into a new segment called, "Worth A Flyer," where they suggest a couple of players and cards that seem to be dirt cheap right now that might be worth gambling on to see a nice return in the future. But they stipulate it might also go down to zero, which they would be okay with since it's not a big investment to begin with.

Lastly, as usual, the show ends with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Nikita Kucherov Young Guns rookie card vs. Steven Stamkos Young Guns rookie card both valued at $420; Trevor Lawrence vs. Justin Fields and Mac Jones and Zach Wilson; Mookie Betts Red Hot Foil Topps Update rookie card (BGS 9.5) for $400 vs. Mookie Betts Gold Topps Update rookie card /2014 (BGS 9.5) for $1080.

Interview with Warren Laufer of Arena Club on Building the 'World's First Digital Card Show' and How Derek Jeter Negotiates in Sports Card Trades; Plus Addressing Panini Kaboom Insert Controversy Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 93 - Clark, John and Will start the show sharing their thoughts on whether the Panini America Kaboom insert controversy is something collectors should be worried about or if it's much ado about nothing.

Then Clark talks with Warren Laufer, vice-president of business development at Arena Club, which is being billed as the world's first digital card show. Warren shares how cofounders Brian Lee and Derek Jeter teamed up to build Arena Club as well as details about the various services the digital platform offers (including their own grading and vaulting service as well as the ability to make secure trades of physical cards between collectors). Plus he talks about how the famous New York Yankees legend has brought his competitiveness from the diamond into the hobby when it comes to negotiating sports card trades.

The Case for Buying and Investing in Unlicensed Sports Cards; Will Netflix Movie on Sports Card World Have Impact on Hobby?; Debating Hobby Hot Takes (ie. 1/1 Ultra-Modern Cards Will Lose 75% Value) Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 92 - Clark and John welcome back their friend Will who's filling in for Hyung while he's with the Team Canada Junior Baseball Team in Mexico. They start the show, off the top, by talking about the reported movie about the high-end sports card world, which is said to be in production for Netflix by the Safdie brothers featuring Adam Sandler. The trio have previously worked together on the critically-acclaimed film, "Uncut Gems." The guys discuss whether they think a dramatized movie on the sports card world will have any impact on the hobby.

In this week's Hobby Headlines, Clark, John, and Will dive deeper in discussion about unlicensed product (ie. Panini Prizm Baseball) and whether it's worth investing in. Will states why he collects certain inserts and cards of unlicensed product and what he finds appealing about them. They also ponder if Fanatics ends up buying Panini America and they come out with licensed Panini Prizm baseball cards, would the value of the unlicensed products increase or decrease as a result?

Next, Clark introduces a new segment called, "Change My Mind" in which he gives four hobby hot takes, and if John and/or Will disagree with any of them, they would try to "change Clark's mind" with their opinion. Some of the hobby hot takes in this segment include: Soccer cards won't see a bump in value during the World Cup; Hockey cards will only be relevant in Canada; and 1/1 cards from ultra-modern sets will be worth 75% less in one or two years.

Lastly, as usual, the show ends with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Trevor Zegras rookie cards vs. Cole Caufield rookie cards; Shohei Ohtani 2018 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor /5 (PSA 9) vs. Luka Doncic 2018 Panini Prizm Gold /10 (BGS 9); and Lionel Messi 2004 Panini Sports Mega Cracks rookie card raw vs. Lionel Messi 2014 Prizm Silver World Cup (PSA 10).

Looking at Cards That May Have Dropped Way Too Much in Value; Early Christmas Gift Suggestions to Fellow Card Lovers; Overrated/Underrated Segment (Live Card Show Theme) Nov 01, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 91 - Clark, Hyung, and John start the show by giving their early Christmas gift suggestions of sports cards that could see a good return in 2023 to give to fellow card collectors (or themselves).

Then in this week's Hobby Headlines, the guys each list a couple of cards that they're keeping a closer eye on because of how significantly that particular card value has decreased in this bear market and it might be a great buying opportunity for them.

Next, they play another round of Overrated/Underrated with the theme of this segment being things related to live card shows such as eBay comps, venue size and number of vendors, corporate brand presence, and grading services on-site.

Lastly, as usual, the show ends with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Juan Soto 2016 Bowman Chrome Autograph Card (PSA 10) vs Juan Soto 2018 Topps Chrome Autograph Card (PSA 10); Ken Griffey 1989 Topps Traded Tiffany (PSA 10) vs. Barry Bonds 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany (PSA 10); and better card investment – Russell Westbrook vs. Kyrie Irving.
