Will New Lower PSA, BGS Fees Bring More Submissions to Respective Grading Companies in 2023?; Can New Netflix Specials (Full Swing, Break Point, Drive to Survive) Boost the Hobby like the Last Dance? Jan 17, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 107 - Clark, Hyung, and John open the show by talking about three Netflix specials focused on three different sports, and discuss whether it would make any impact on cards associated with the niche sports. The first show is Full Swing, which follows a group of golfers on the PGA Tour including Rory McIlroy. The second is Season 5 of Drive to Survive with Max Verstappen participating in interviews this time. And finally, the show Break Point which features the next generation of tennis players looking to become number one.

The guys then discuss their thoughts on the new grading fees and structures of PSA and BGS (Beckett) and if it's enough to persuaded them to send more of their cards to either of the grading companies (as well as whether BGS can make some sort of comeback and what it would take). They also talk about how SGC is running its business and commends the company in particular for their topnotch customer service.

They finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Sapphire rookie card vs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Purple Refractor /250; Panini Select is more likely to take second spot from Optic vs. BGS is more likely to take second spot from SGC; Carlos Correa 2013 Bowman Chrome base autograph card vs. Ronald Acuna 2018 Bowman Chrome rookie autograph card.

    Show notes

EPISODE 106 - Clark, Hyung, and John kick off the show by talking about the potential investment opportunity (or lack thereof?) in the Victor Wembanyama's Sports Illustrated for Kids card found in the January/February edition of this year. Is it worth picking one up or is it just a gimmick?

The guys then welcome back their hobby friend William Chong, owner of Dolly's Toys and Games, back to the show to talk about how the trading card business has been for them in 2022 as well as what he expects for the hobby in 2023. They also ask William his thoughts on the conspiracy theory that some high-end products with the big hits are marked and then shipped to popular breakers. Plus he weighs in on a controversial take by Eric Whiteback that outdated mom and pop shops that look like they're from straight out of the '90s should go the way of the dinosaur and cease to exist.

The pairs chosen this week include: Mookie Betts Topps Heritage Real One Autograph rookie card (POP 10) vs. Nolan Arenado Topps Heritage Real One Autograph rookie card (POP 2); Kyrie Irving Prizm (silver) Rookie Card vs. Devin Booker + Donovan Mitchell Prizm Silver rookie cards; Jackson Chourio Bowman Chrome Refractor Autograph rookie card /499 (PSA 10) vs. Julio Rodriguez Bowman Chrome Base Autograph rookie card (BGS 9).

Is the Future of Digital Collectables and NFT Trading Cards Dead with Fanatics Divesting 60% of its Stake in Candy Digital?; Shyne150's Reacquires Luka Doncic Logoman for $3.1M Jan 06, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 105 - Clark, Hyung and John start the first Friday episode of 2023 by talking about @Shyne150's recent "re-acquisition" of the Luka Doncic Logoman Autograph Card for $3.1M – the same card he sold about a year ago for $4.6M (resulting in a profit of $1.5M plus having the card back in his possession).

Then for the Friday hobby discussion, the guys respond to the recent news that Fanatics is divesting 60% of its stake in NFT company Candy Digital. Is this a bad sign for the future of NFT trading cards and digital collectables in general? Or is this just simply growing pains with the new blockchain technology still an inevitability in the hobby?

Deciding Whether to Sell Big Time Sports Cards That Have Significantly Dropped in Value Since Hobby Peak; Thoughts on No Autograph Hit in 2022 Topps Chrome Sapphire Baseball Dec 09, 2022
    Show notes

EPISODE 99 - Clark, Hyung and John talk about their initial thoughts on the newly released 2022 Topps Chrome Sapphire Baseball Set and the fact it doesn't come with an autograph hit this year.

Then the guys discuss some recent sales of big time sports cards, how much it's dropped since the peak of the hobby hype, but also how much it's increased if you had bought the card pre-hobby boom, and deciding what they would do with the card if they still owned one.

For example, the Tom Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders rookie autograph card (BGS 8.5) sold for $6,500 in January 2018, sold for $84,000 during the hobby peak in January 2022, but came back down in December 2022 for $25,100 (a nice 4X if you bought pre-hobby hype, but a major loss if you bought at the 2022 peak).
