    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    The world is a dangerous place and Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism. Terrorist attacks on our own soil demonstrate that our law enforcement and national security agencies require more tools to keep pace with evolving threats, and to better protect Canadians here at home. Minister Steven Blaney will highlight the Harper Government’s commitment to protect its citizens against the evolving threat of terrorism and will discuss the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 (C-51). Bio Steven Blaney was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006 and re-elected in 2008 and 2011. In July 2013, Mr. Blaney was appointed Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Previously, he was appointed Minister of Veterans Affairs in May 2011, and to the additional position of Minister for La Francophonie in February 2013. Mr. Blaney was appointed Vice-Chair of the Conservative Quebec Caucus and in October 2008, he became Chair. He served on the standing committees on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and on Environment and Sustainable Development. In light of the importance of the mission in Afghanistan, Mr. Blaney later joined the Standing Committee on National Defence and participated in a visit to Kandahar. In May 2007, Mr. Blaney became Chair of the Standing Committee on Official Languages, which strives to promote linguistic duality throughout the country. After he graduated from the Université de Sherbrooke, Mr. Blaney became a civil engineer in 1988 and then obtained a Master of Business Administration in 2002 in Lévis. After his studies, he worked as a consultant, an entrepreneur and an advisor for urban infrastructure and environmental technologies. Most recently Minister Blaney swam across the St. Lawrence River to raise fund for the Social Pediatric Center in his riding of Levi, an organization that supports children’s development.

    Combating the terrorism threat, at home and abroad

    On Tuesday, April 28th, The Canadian Club of Toronto is proud to recognize one of this country’s most distinguished Canadians, The Right Honourable Paul Martin, with its 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award – an award that celebrates the lifelong efforts and leadership of extraordinary Canadians. Mr. Martin’s contributions to Canada, throughout his career in business and public service, as well as his dedication to indigenous causes, embody the spirit of this award. Please join us as we celebrate Mr. Martin’s achievements and hear from him as he reflects upon his life’s work in a candid conversation with The Honourable Frank Iacobucci. The Right Honourable Paul Martin was Prime Minister of Canada from 2003 to 2006 and Minister of Finance from 1993 to 2002. During his tenure as Minister of Finance, he erased Canada’s deficit, subsequently recording five consecutive budget surpluses and set Canada’s debt-to-GDP ratio on a steady downward track. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Mr. Martin introduced a ten year plan to improve health care and reduce wait times; signed agreements with the provinces and territories to establish the first national early learning and child care program and created a new financial deal for Canada’s municipalities. Under his leadership the Canadian Government reached an historic deal with Aboriginal people of Canada to eliminate the existing funding gaps in health, education and housing known as the Kelowna Accord. After leaving politics, Mr. Martin founded the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative focusing on elementary and secondary education for Aboriginal students and the Capital for Aboriginal Prosperity and Entrepreneurship (CAPE) Fund, an investment fund investing in Aboriginal business. Internationally, he is chairman of the Congo Basin Forest Fund, sits on the Advisory Council of the Coalition for Dialogue on Africa, and is a commissioner for the Global Ocean Commission. Before entering politics, he had a distinguished career as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The CSL Group Inc.

    Christine Elliott, MPP for Whitby-Oshawa and candidate for leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, will reflect on the months she has spent engaging with Ontarians from every region of this province and will outline her bold vision for the future of Ontario. Christine will offer her progressive conservative solutions to restore Ontario’s position as a leader in Canada. Bio Christine graduated from the University of Western Ontario with both a Bachelor of Arts degree and Bachelor of Laws degree. Christine then forged a successful career in business and law, working first on the international audit team of one of Canada’s largest banks, and then co-founding a law firm with her late husband Jim Flaherty, where she specialized in real estate, corporate law, and estate law. As a sophisticated business leader, lawyer, and entrepreneur, Christine has worked tirelessly to help businesses in Whitby, Ottawa, and Toronto open, expand, and thrive. Christine also used her business and legal prowess to pursue her commitment to public service, and her pro bono legal work for charitable organizations gained her the recognition as a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, the highest award with Rotary. As a mother, lawyer, businesswoman, and entrepreneur, Christine knows the importance of balancing a family budget and managing a successful business. Christine knows that responsible leadership is needed to get Ontario back onto the right financial track.

    Mr. Brison will provide a review of the government’s economic record since taking office, an outline of the direction of the Canadian economy, and ideas about how to help the middle class and those seeking to join it. Bio Scott Brison is the Member of Parliament for the riding of Kings-Hants. He was first elected to the House of Commons in June 1997 and currently serves as the Liberal Finance Critic and Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Finance Committee. Scott is Co-Chair of Justin Trudeau’s Economic Council of Advisors. He is also a member of the Trilateral Commission and an alumnus of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Young Global Leaders. During the previous Liberal government, Scott served as Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Receiver General of Canada. Scott holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance from Dalhousie University and has completed an executive education program in leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School. He has had extensive private sector experience in private equity and investment banking and currently serves as Chairman of SeaFort Capital. Scott and his partner, Maxime, live in Cheverie, Nova Scotia, with their twin daughters Claire and Rose. In his spare time, Scott enjoys reading to his daughters, running, kayaking, skiing, and growing apples and grapes.

    Providing a new direction for middle class jobs and growth

    Six months into the job, Premier Gallant is taking firm steps to address New Brunswick’s fiscal challenges and maximize new opportunities. Brian Gallant’s government has sharpened the focus on job creation and is working on a strategic program review aimed at cutting the province’s deficit by hundreds of millions of dollars. Find out how the Gallant government plans to move New Brunswick forward with a more diverse economy spurred on by major projects like the Energy East pipeline and investments in mining. Bio Brian Gallant is New Brunswick’s 33rd Premier. At age 32, he is the youngest first minister in Canada in more than a century. Gallant was elected Leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party on Oct. 27, 2012, at a leadership convention that saw a record number of convention voters cast a ballot. He was first elected to the province’s Legislative Assembly in a by-election for the riding of Kent in April 2013, and was sworn-in as Leader of the Official Opposition. In the Sept. 2014 general election, Gallant offered and won the seat in his home riding, Shediac Bay-Dieppe. On Oct. 7 he was sworn in as Premier, President of the Executive Council, Chair of the New Brunswick Jobs Board, Minister responsible for Innovation, Intergovernmental Affairs, Women’s Equality and Rural Affairs. Since then, his government has focused on its efforts to create jobs, improve finances and support families in the province. At meetings of Canada’s premiers in January, Premier Gallant was named by his peers as a co-lead for the Premiers’ Working Group on Labour Market Development Agreements and as a co-lead for the Premiers’ Working Group on the Canadian Energy Strategy. Gallant was educated at a number of elementary schools in New Brunswick as his parents moved for work. He graduated from Polyvalente Louis-J.-Robichaud in Shediac. Determined to pursue a post-secondary education, he started and operated two small companies to pay for his university education. He attended the Université de Moncton where he completed a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and then a Bachelor of Laws degree. He also earned a Master of Laws degree from McGill University. Gallant practised law with the firm Stewart McKelvey in the areas of corporate and commercial law. He later joined the Veritas Law firm in Dieppe as a partner.
