    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will be a transformational event for Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. With more than 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials coming from 41 countries, this will be the largest international multi-sport Games ever hosted in Canada. Athletes will compete in 51 sports at 30 venues across the Games footprint, in front of more than 1.4 million spectators. Canada will see its largest ever team march into the Pan Am Ceremonies Venue at 1 Blue Jays Way, when the Pan Am Games Opening Ceremony kicks things off on July 10th. Following the conclusion of the Parapan Am Games on August 15th, a legacy of new sport venues, improved infrastructure and a new waterfront neighborhood will enhance the community for years to come. The Honourable David Peterson, former Premier of Ontario and Chairman of TO2015, will reveal exciting new information on the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay, which begins May 30th. Canadian racing cyclist and three-time Olympic medalist Curt Harnett will join Mr. Peterson for a candid conversation about the exciting and lasting legacy of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Each attendee also has 1/10 odds to win a pair of tickets to the Games, also provided by Cisco. About The Honourable David R. Peterson, P.C., Q.C., O.Ont., C. St. J., C.L.H., D.U., L.L.D. David Peterson served as the Premier of Ontario between 1985 and 1990, overseeing an active period of reform and playing a major role in Canada’s constitutional discussions. He was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1975. He is currently chairman of Cassels Brock LLP, where he practices corporate/commercial law. In 2009, Peterson was the chairman of the successful TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games Bid Committee, following on his work as a member on the 2008 Toronto Olympic Bid Committee. In his four decades of public service, he has served on a number of private and public boards, as well as not-for-profit sport organizations, including St. Michael’s Hospital, the Shaw Festival and the Toronto Community Foundation. He is the founding chairman of the Toronto Raptors Basketball Club Inc. and the chancellor emeritus of the University of Toronto. Peterson was also chairman of the Commonwealth Team observing the 1992 elections in Guyana and the chief federal negotiator for the devolution of the Northwest Territories. He holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario, an LL.B from the University of Toronto and studied at the University of Caen, France. Peterson also has honorary doctorates from the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Ottawa, the University of Tel Aviv and the American University of the Caribbean. He is a Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour of France and was summoned by Her Majesty to the Privy Council in 1992. In 2009, he was appointed to the Order of Ontario in recognition of his public and community service contributions.

    Join us on May 20th as Canada’s Minister of National Defence and Minister for Multiculturalism, The Honourable Jason Kenney, discusses Canadians, the Armed Forces, and security challenges. Bio Jason Kenney was born in Ontario and raised in Saskatchewan, where he graduated from Notre Dame College. He did undergraduate studies in philosophy at the University of San Francisco. Mr. Kenney served as President of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation prior to his election to the House of Commons in 1997 as Member of Parliament for Calgary Southeast. He has been re-elected five times, most recently with 76% of the vote. He is a former Chairman of the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights, and served in several positions in Opposition, including as Finance Critic and Deputy House Leader. Mr. Kenney became Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister in 2006, and Secretary of State for Multiculturalism in 2007. As Canada’s longest-serving Minister of Citizenship and Immigration from 2008 to 2013, Mr. Kenney implemented comprehensive reforms to Canada’s immigration, refugee and citizenship programs, leading the National Post to call him “perhaps Canada’s best immigration minister ever.” From 2013 to 2015 he served as Minister of Employment and Social Development where he led wide-ranging reforms to Canada’s job training programs, to help better prepare Canadians for the labour market. In February 2015, he was appointed Minister of National Defence, serving the men and women of Canada’s Armed Forces. Mr. Kenney chairs the Cabinet Committee on Operations, is the Regional Minister for Southern Alberta, and sits on the Cabinet Committee for Planning and Priorities. He has been voted the “best overall” and “hardest working” MP by his colleagues in Maclean’s Magazine’s annual survey of parliamentarians.

    In February 2013, Premier Wynne appointed Reza Moridi Minister of Research and Innovation and in June 2014 as the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. Minister Moridi was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 2007 representing the riding of Richmond Hill and re-elected in 2011 and 2014. He has served as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, the Minister of Research and Innovation and the Minister of Energy. Reza Moridi is an award-winning scientist, engineer, educator, business leader and community activist. Moridi has lived with his family in Richmond Hill since 1991. Educated in the UK, Moridi obtained a PhD from Brunel University. He is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist. Minister Moridi worked as a CEO and Chair in the electrical industry and his career in academia included serving as the Dean of the School of Sciences, Chair of the Physics Department, University Chief Librarian and member of the Senate at Alzahra University in Tehran. Prior to his entry to politics, Moridi had a 17-year career at the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada where he was the Vice-President and Chief Scientist. For his contributions to the understanding of nuclear materials, radiation and health physics, Moridi has received the Education and Communication Award from the Canadian Nuclear Society and the Fellow Award from the US Health Physics Society. He was elected as a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics and the UK Institution of Engineering and Technology for his original contribution to physics and engineering. Minister Moridi’s extensive political, business and scientific background provide him with the knowledge and the experience needed to bridge academia with business and government. He understands first-hand that research is part of Ontario’s economic engine and he strongly believes that the Ministry of Research and Innovation along with Training, Colleges and Universities is key to building the economy of tomorrow.
