    Canadian Club of Toronto

    The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

    Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

    The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

    Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

    Please join us on Monday, November 2nd, when Rick Waugh, President & CEO of Scotiabank discusses the Impact of the Financial Crisis. As the global economy moves beyond the financial crisis and begins to make the transition from recession to recovery, Rick Waugh will look at the new landscape emerging in the financial services industry. From a Canadian perspective, he will examine steps being taken by the public and private sectors around the world to strengthen the global financial system for the future. Rick Waugh began his career with Scotiabank in 1970, in branch banking in Manitoba. After relocating to Toronto a few months later, he went on to serve in a number of positions of increasing responsibility in the Bank’s investment, corporate and retail banking areas. In 1985, he moved to New York where, for the next eight years, as the Bank’s most senior officer in the United States, he played a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the Bank’s U.S. activities. In 1993, Rick returned to Toronto as Senior Executive Vice-President, Corporate Banking. He became Vice-Chairman, Corporate Banking, in June 1995, followed by Vice-Chairman, International Banking & Wealth Management in June 1998. He was appointed Scotiabank’s President and CEO in 2003.

    Please join us on October 26th when U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue will discuss the significance of the Canada-U.S. relationship, economic recovery efforts in the United States, the fight against rising protectionism and isolationism – including Buy American rules in the U.S. stimulus package -and a major new Chamber initiative to defend, protect, and advance the free enterprise system. Thomas J. Donohue is president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Since assuming his position in 1997, Donohue has built the Chamber into a lobbying and political force with expanded influence across the globe. The U.S. Chamber is the world’s largest business organization, representing 3 million businesses of every size, sector, and region.

    Please join The National Forum (Canadian Club of Toronto and Empire Club of Canada) on Tuesday October 20th, when Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan will speak about the impact of the global recession on the Ontario economy – and Ontario’s finances. Minister Duncan will highlight challenges facing Ontario’s economy and the tough choices Ontarians will have to make as the government focuses on its priorities. Dwight Duncan was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1995, and was re-elected in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Duncan previously served as Minister of Energy and Chair of Cabinet, Minister of Finance and Chair of Management Board of Cabinet, as well as Government House Leader. As Minister of Energy, Duncan brought meaningful change to Ontario’s electricity sector, fostering a culture of conservation, while ensuring a reliable, sustainable, diverse and affordable power supply. Duncan is a lifelong resident of Windsor. From 1987 to 1995, Duncan served as an administrator at Brentwood Recovery Centre, Canada’s largest alcohol and drug recovery centre. He sat on Windsor City Council from 1988 to 1994. A graduate of McGill University and the University of Windsor, Duncan has degrees in economics and commerce, as well as a MBA. He has one son, Sean.

    Why should Toronto host the Pan Am Games in 2015

    In Partnership with the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Despite the global financial and economic turmoil, Mainland China recorded a 7.9 per cent growth in GDP in the second quarter of 2009. Hong Kong also continues playing its key role as a two-way springboard for both international and Mainland companies looking for opportunities. Hong Kong’s special strategic position makes it particularly important for Canadian businesses/services interested in the China market. In 2008, Canada’s direct investment in Hong Kong amounted to $6 billion. There are close to a hundred Canadian companies with regional headquarters/offices in Hong Kong. Please join us on Thursday, October 8th when Mr. WONG Yan Lung, SC, Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government of China, will speak at our podium to give an update on Hong Kong’s international links, legal system, intellectual property protection regime, its regional dispute resolution services, arbitration involving Mainland China parties, and more. Mr. WONG Yan Lung, SC, has been serving as Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice since October 2005. Prior to the appointment, Mr. Wong was a barrister in private practice. He sat as Deputy High Court Judge of the Court of First Instance in July and August 2003, and was a Council Member of the Hong Kong Bar Association on multiple terms between 1989 and 2005. Mr. Wong graduated from the University of Cambridge and was conferred Bachelor of Arts (Law) and Master of Arts (Law) Degrees. He was appointed as Senior Counsel in Hong Kong in 2002 and elected as a Master of the Bench of Middle Temple in the United Kingdom in 2007.
