    Canadian Club of Toronto

The Canadian Club of Toronto is Canada’s preeminent public affairs podium. Since 1897, we have served an ambitious and important mission: to connect Canadians with world-class leaders and newsmakers and be a leading platform for influencers to engage Canadians on what matters most.

Over our 125 year history as a not-for-profit organization, we continue to be a forum for Governors General and Prime Ministers, CEOs and Nobel laureates, scientists, artists and innovators. We have a proud tradition of hosting national and international leaders in politics, business, social innovation and the media, and our members and audiences are drawn from an equally diverse and distinguished group of leaders.

The Canadian Club addresses routinely generate national coverage across multiple platforms. In addition to reported media coverage and our in-person audience of several hundred people, we make our programming accessible to all Canadians through broadcasts on cable television and webcasts, available online.

Events run between September and June in downtown Toronto. As an independent, non-profit organization, we make all our events open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online or through our office at 416-364-5590.

Preparing for Recovery: How Canadian Businesses Can Capitalize on Emerging Market

    Hon. James M. Flaherty Nov 20, 2009
    Show notes

Please join The National Forum (Canadian Club of Toronto and Empire Club of Canada) on Friday November 20th, when Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, in anticipation of the next federal budget, will discuss the current state of the Canadian economy and how the government’s Economic Action Plan is positioning the country for continued economic recovery. Jim Flaherty is a second-term Member of Parliament for Whitby-Oshawa (Ontario). He serves as Canada’s Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the Greater Toronto Area. He is a Governor of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. As Minister of Finance he is an ex-officio member of all Cabinet Committees. Minister Flaherty was recently awarded Euromoney Magazine’s Finance Minister of the Year award. Euromoney credited him with enhancing Canada’s reputation for sound fiscal policy while taking full account of social justice and overseeing a strong regulatory regime that has kept the financial sector out of chaos. Previously, for more than 10 years, he served as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby-Ajax (Ontario). He served as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance, Attorney General and Minister of Labour. He graduated from Princeton University cum laude and then graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Bar in Ontario with honours and practiced law for more than 20 years before being elected to public office.

Morgan Freeman And Paul Saltzman Nov 13, 2009
    Show notes

In 1997, Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in his Mississippi home town under one condition: the prom had to be racially integrated. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Freeman offered again. This time the school board accepted, and history was made. Until this moment, at Charleston High School, blacks and whites had separate proms even though their classrooms have been integrated for decades. Prom Night in Mississippi follows the students, teachers, and parents in the lead-up to the big day. Prom Night In Mississippi captures a big moment in a small town, where hope finally blossoms in black, white, and a whole lot of taffeta. On November 13th Canadian Club’s own Amanda Lang, Senior Business Correspondent for CBC News, will be joined in person by Morgan Freeman, Academy Award Winning Actor and Paul Saltzman, Director-Producer of Prom Night in Mississippi, to explore this extraordinarily moving and ground breaking film. http://www.promnightinmississippi.com

General Rick Hillier Nov 12, 2009
    Show notes

Please join The National Forum (Canadian Club of Toronto and Empire Club of Canada) on Thursday, November 12th when General Rick Hiller discusses his newly released book, ‘A Soldier First; Dodging Bullets, Bureaucrats and the Politics of War’ and Canada’s top 5 security issues in the 21st Century and how they should be addressed. Becoming Canada’s top soldier in February 2005, General Rick Hillier (retired) fought two battles, each with his trademark passion and urgency. The first was on the ground in Afghanistan, as Canada’s traditional peacekeeping role segued dramatically into a heavy combat mission in the scorching hills of Kandahar. The second battle was for the hearts and minds of Canadians. The most outspoken Canadian military leader in a generation, he leaves a renewed military, equipped with new aircraft, vehicles and other equipment as well as real-life battle experience that has earned the notice of the world. As a tireless military advocate, he raised the profile of Canada’s military, which endeared him to his troops and gave Canada an important card to play at the NATO table. Since retiring in July of 2008 he has been Canada’s most sought after keynote speaker. His corporate efforts are countless and it is anticipated that his new book, released on October 22nd, is destined to be the bestseller of 2009.

In the year since the meltdown in global financial markets, governments and regulators have succeeded in restoring market stability. Now, the goal for Canadian policy-makers must be to introduce reforms that prevent the repetition of the crisis while spurring economic recovery. Please join us on November 9th when IIAC President and CEO Ian Russell will talk about the reform process that is critical to economic recovery – globally and in Canada – and put forward a five-part process that governments in Canada must pursue to guarantee the recovery and growth of Canadian markets. Ian C.W. Russell is President and CEO of the Investment Industry Association of Canada, a position he has held since the Association’s inauguration on April 1, 2006. During its first year of operation, the new Association has established a robust board and committee structure and has successfully advocated for the industry on a broad range of issues, including deferral of the client relationship model draft rules and extension of the three-year exemption for bond market transparency. As the head of the Investment Industry Association, Ian is a frequent columnist in industry publications and is a presenter and speaker on industry issues and developments.
